Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 12 Week 3: Cumans vs Ethiopians

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 10:41 PM PDT

A very "standard" AoE2 civ vs... Cumans...

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Lithuanians vs Portuguese, and next up is the Cumans vs Ethiopians!

    Cumans: Cavalry civilization

    • Additional TC can be built in Feudal Age
    • Siege Workshop available in Feudal Age; Capped Ram upgrade available in Castle Age
    • Cavalry move +5/10/15% faster in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Palisade Walls gain +33% hp
    • Unique Unit: Kipchak (Cheap, weak, and nimble cav archer that fires multiple arrows at once)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Steppe Husbandry (Scouts, Steppe Lancers, and Cav Archers train +100% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Cuman Mercenaries (All teammates can create 10 Elite Kipchaks for free at Castle)

    Ethiopians: Archer civilization

    • Archers fire +18% faster
    • Receive +100f, +100g upon reaching the next Age
    • Pikeman upgrade free
    • TEAM BONUS: Towers and Outposts +3 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Shotel Warrior (Fast, frail infantry that trains quickly and has a massive attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Royal Heirs (Shotels trained almost instantly)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Torsion Engines (Siege Workshop units gain increased blast radius)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, so a bit of an odd one for sure. For 1v1 on open maps, Ethiopians have a much more straightforward approach with some sort of drush, men at arms, and/or archer play. They lack any sort of persistent eco bonus, but their powerful timings cannot be underestimated. Cumans, meanwhile, have to play unorthodox to leverage their bonuses. Nevertheless, their army is one of the most mobile in the game, and that is very important on open maps. Do you think a Cuman player will be able to consistently get an early second TC against an Ethiopian opponent on Arabia?
    • On closed maps, both of these civs more or less ride just below the top tiers. Cumans can comfortably boom to their heart's content, giving them one of the most powerful economies in the entire game. Their issue becomes having a super cost-efficient late game army on maps that do not have lots of space. Ethiopians, on the other hand, are pretty much the opposite. They still lack a persistent eco bonus, but their post-Imp army is one of the most powerful in the game with archers, halbs, and siege. Which do you favor on maps like Arena, BF, and Hideout?
    • In team games, Ethiopians are generally considered to be just under the top flank civs, simply because they are a powerful archer civ that fits the meta there quite nicely. You lack the eco of Britons, Mayans, Chinese, or Vietnamese, but your high dps archer can give you one of the most powerful armies at all stages. Cumans obviously much prefer pocket, and although unorthodox, are quite good at it. Pocket players generally have a bit more space to get their second TC going quickly, and from there, you have super quick fully-upgraded Paladins. How do you see these civs working out in various TG comps?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Persians vs Turks. Hope to see you there! :)

AI ally turned on me and asked for resources as ransom.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 12:11 PM PDT

I was playing a single player random map, i think it was connected Islands costal map.

I forgot to assign teams, so all 3 were my enemies. I made 1 AI my ally by sending resources.

I finished 1 enemy then finished 2nd with my ally. But as soon as 2nd resigned my ally turned on me and started attacking. And was asking resources as ransom. I never seen this before.

Luckely i saved the game 2-3 minutes ago so i went back just to take brutal revange because i hate blackmailers and had him surrounded with my ships while he was still my ally. Finished 2nd enemy and again he did the same and attacked and i finished him brutally in seconds.

I ended the game with devil laugh😈😂. That was the best game in years.

    Buffing/Nerfing Civs

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 11:21 AM PDT

Perhaps the most common theme I see day after day is requests to Buff civs (and nerf occasionally).

Why does every civ need to be good on Arabia?

As an example, there is a recent thread from just a few minutes ago asking for buffs for the portuguese, spanish, koreans, and Turks I believe.

Is it not enough that most of these civs are very good on closed maps?

Why do we need 37 civs that are all equal on Arabia?

    It's baffling to me...

AOE2:DE Attila the Hun Campaign Progress Lost

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 07:04 PM PDT

Hey all, I've been playing through the campaigns since a few weeks ago and I've just finished the Atilla the Hun campaign. After I finished the Finale and clicked on Attila the Hun's campaign to see all my gold medals, it appeared like my progress for the whole campaign had been reset. I left the game, came back, I even i r winnered myself to the final mission, replayed it from a checkpoint to see if it would give me all the medals, but it only gave me the medal for the final scenario, so the whole scenario didn't show up as gold. I'm really pissed about this because this was a campaign I actually spent at least ten-fifteen hours completing (yeah I suck), and having all that progress thrown away hurts. So I'm asking if anyone has a solution either to just restore my progress or at least show gold medals on the scenarios. I know it seems stupid to at least want to see the gold medals, but now I feel like all that work has been for nothing.

    Empires Wars Ranked Queue When?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 02:44 PM PDT

Is anybody able to provide an update on when Empire Wars will be getting a ranked queue?

I REALLY want to play a faster paced version of the game and EW seems perfect. RBW is going on now, Devs said awhile back that they would be swapping DM for EW. Are they listening to the vocal minority and keeping DM now? I just want to be able to get EW games.

I have recurring dream about AoE2...

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 08:16 PM PDT

Every once in a while I dream I'm playing AoE2 and getting outplayed by my opponent. I then start looking for his units in the map and smash them with my fingers, as if my monitor was a touch screen, and as if my finger being pressed on the screen would actually kill units. In the dream, I know that what I'm doing is wrong, but I still do it anyway, ashamed of myself.

Anyway, if the devs need a suggestion for a buff, I got one. But it requires a touch screen display.

A possible role for Steppe Lancers

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 11:00 AM PDT

Since many find that Steppe Lancers lack a distinct role other than "worse knight but cheaper" I thought we could give the Steppe Lancer an Anti-Pike and Camel unit role, since the Anti-Cavalry Cavalry is covered by the Camel and Archers are Steppe Lancer's weakness this was all that was left.

I also saw somewhere else in a different post that they could have extra Cavalry armour, which I think is a good idea. (I don't remeber the post)

I was thinking something like +4/7 vs Infantry and +3/5 vs Camels for normal and Elite and maybe +6/8 Cavalry armour.

The main point behind this is that, since Steppe Lancers only have 1 pierce armour they only get 3 pierce in Castle Age and 5 in Imperial and thus are weak to arrows, so when raiding the enemy Pikes and Camels will have a more difficult time getting rid of them so only arrows are a threat to them. Here is a breakdown:

    Castle Age:

    • With my buffs the Castle Age Steppe Lancer will do 13 attack vs Pikes and only take 20 attack in return while Knights deal 10 attack and take 24. Steppe Lancers will kill Pikemen in 5 hits (Knights do in 6) but die in only 4 hits (Knights take 5)
    • Against Camels they will deal 12 attack while Knights deal 10 and Steppe Lancers take 9 attack instead of a Knight's 13 attack. Steppe Lancers kill Camels in 10 hits (Knights do in 12) but die in only 9 hits (Knights take 10)

    Imperial Age:

    • Elite Steppe Lancers deal 19 attack to Halberdiers instead of a Cavalier's 13 and a Paladin's 15 while ESL recieve 31 instead of a Cavalier's and Paladin's 38. ESL will kill a Halberdier in 4 hits while Cavaliers do it in 5 and Paladin's match the ESL with 4. However, ESLs are killed by Halberdiers in 4 hits against a Cavalier's 4 and a Paladin's 5.
    • Elite Steppe Lancers would deal 17 attack vs Camels instead of a Cavalier's 13 and a Paladin's 15. ESL take 18 attack from Heavy Camels while Cavaliers and Paladins take 24. This means that the ESL would kill Heavy Camels in 9 hits compared to a Cavalier's 11 and a Paladin's 10 while the ESL is killed in 6 hits, Cavaliers are killed in 6 and Paladins are killed in 8.

How do you like my changes?
