Which classic civs, techs and units would people lose their minds over if they were released today?

I'm sorry, Vikings have a unit that regenerates? That's just not Age of Empires. And don't even get me started on Huns not needing to build houses!

The 1v1 placement has to be changed. My brother started playing teamgames with me, and is now ranked ~900 elo above his level. His second game was against CL.Darknoob! He is not prepared to be clowned =(

    Reset WidgedUI folder

So I was playing around with the UI of the game, but am ultimately unhappy with it. Is there a way to reset all files in the widgedUI folder to default without reinstalling the game? (yes, I was dumb enough to not follow the rule of always creating a backup)

Strategy Thesis of the Week: Indians are not a camel-civ - they're the only mobile counter-civ.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 04:47 PM PDT

(In 1-v-1 that is, of course.)

This week I want to discuss a little change of thought that I had recently in regard to the Indians. They are seen as what they are on first sight: a camel-civ with strong eco. Their go-to-gameplan is obviously Scouts into Camels.

Disclaimer: That stuff is rather supposed to be thought provoking than 100% true and I'll go for some clickbaitish headline now and then to get the discussion rolling. So, feel free to give your opinion and don't be too angry about me. ;) Also I want to add that my view will, in some cases, not translate into top-level-meta because the time-windows and their use is tighter up there, but with a current Elo of 1600-1700, my thoughts should be somewhat applicable for 98% of the player base.

So, Camels!? No. Not that simple.

    https://youtu.be/E2mMu2Xvohg

Recent superhit of pop music star "TheViper" gives us an insight into a core wisdom when it comes to the Indians: Camels work almost exclusively against cavalry.

Camels (with extra pierce armor) are good in team-games when Xbows are there to deal with Pikemen. In 1v1, the Camel is basically countered by everything except Knights, Hussars and Skirms. It has a very specific use-case, is much harder countered by Pikemen than Knights are and also, often times, won't cut it against Xbows.

Bottom line: Against Turks, you can just spam Camels and they're kinda dead. (Fun fact: That's how I got my only win against Memb so far.) All other civs counter that with Pikemen so hard, that it's not really a strategy.

Does that mean, that Indians are weak in 1v1? You just go Pikes against them? No. Not that simple.

Indians have a superior eco to most civs, they have full ranged-unit-upgrades except for the Arbelest (= fully upgraded Skirms and CA) and good Hand Canoneers. Therefore, they have counters to everything in the game:

    • You counter Xbows and Xbow-Pike with Skirms (or Xbow-Skirms) while you can afford more economy behind it than usually with Skirms. (= you can add Camels when he adds Knights)
    • You counter Knights with Camels obviously. (Also amazing vs Knights-Archers or Knights-Skirms!)
    • You can counter Pikes (or Pike-Siege) with Cavalry Archers. (Also good in the long-term against Archers and Knights.)
    • You can counter an Infantry-Spam with either CA or Hand Canoneers.
    • And when you are against CA yourself, you have one of the best mobile counters to them in Camels with extra pierce armor.

And those counter options are even stronger than usually: In most games, you don't want to build a counter-army because it will be too costly and can be countered by unit compositions. With Indians, you have

    1. a stronger eco behind your counters, so just protecting your boom is a stronger strategy than in most cases
    2. actually pretty robust army (compositions) even when just countering the opponent
    3. a very good mobility with most of those options which means you're not that glued to your own base as usual (with slow counters such as Mangonels, Skirms, Monks or Pikes)

2.: Usually, all sorts of counter-units are hard-countered by an army addition; Pikes die to any ranged unit, Skirms to any melee unit, both die to siege, Monks die to ranged units and Light Cav. Which makes counter-strategies risky because your counter-unit might be destroyed by a little micro slip up. Indians don't need to use Pikemen and can avoid Skirms quite often and even then they always can add Camels (to protect Skirms, Siege or CA) which are more robust against Archers than normally or they can add CA (to protect Camels) which would already have the cavalry upgrades on them.

This interfers with point 3.: You keep mobility while going for counter-units. That does not only give you the option to raid your opponent and more flexibility on the map, but it also means that you can delay fights easier when you're in the need of an army addition. When your Camels run into 10 Pikemen, you can flee and wait until you have some CA out. When your CA runs into a big army that you can't fight, you retreat to increase your numbers or attack elsewhere.

That is a very significant difference to counter-civs such as Byzantines, Incas and maybe Malians, Celts and also Lithuanians and Koreans with their faster/cheaper trash-units or maybe the Vietnamese and Italians (with their amazing counter-UUs which are also both rather slow). Normally, when you adapt too much to your opponent, you become unflexible in your eco-development, you lose map control and the ability to do damage and you often end up chasing your opponent. With Indians you have the adaptivity but you keep flexibility and mobility too - a very uncommon, maybe even a unique mix.

The bottom line here is to some degree, that they have ranged options too and not only the Camels. You may just think about them as a Camel-and-Cav-Archer-civ as well, but I think it's not even that much about what power options they have, but more how they work on a strategical level: As long as you don't get behind, you have a good shot in getting ahead against most civilisations. And then you have good tools for not falling behind, while keeping a solid army strength and mobility.

Last thing to mention is that they also have a very flexible early game. Basically every single opening is above average for them:

    • You can afford 20 pop scouts and have an easier scout production too (saving 18 food on villagers every minute in Feudal age).
    • You can Drush and then either click up quicker for a Feudal-follow-up or have a pretty comfortable Fast Castle behind it with the food you save on the vils.
    • You can go M@A a bit quicker and it will be much easier to keep villager production while going for a fast Archer-follow-up.
    • You can add Scouts to your Archers easier without delaying Castle Age as much.
    • You will generally have an easier time to go Castle Age, no matter what you play in Feudal. Between minute 12 and 20, you save ~150 food on villagers. (Comparable with the Italian bonus.)

While none of those aspects is S-Tier in their territory - for every opening, some civs do it better - there are not many civs who have bonuses for every single opening which underlines how Indians are a flexible civ that can adapt to many different situations.

Fun fact: While I was typing most of that post, I queued ranked and I actually got Indians on random. Opponent went full CA with Huns and never added Pikemen, so I figured that I'll just keep pumping out camels. After the game he was like "stupid game. wtf. 650 camels. who does that??". So...maybe they're actually a camel civ that is not seen as a camel civ when I was trying to argue the exact opposite?

I guess it just depends. Not that simple.

How do I counter a trash rush against the extreme AI?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 09:03 AM PDT

Hi guys, I was trying to beat the extreme AI yesterday using a scout rush BO. I was able to pick off 3 or 4 vils but then i lost my scouts to spearmen and skirms. The AI then counter attacked with 15+ trash units and the army kept growing in number. I tried sticking to the BO and advance to castle but the army eventually broke through my walls and caused a lot of idle time + vil kills and never recovered from there. What am I supposed to do against a trash rush while the AI is attacking my buildings? Make men at arms and delay castle? Use vils to fight? I was quite overwelmed with the spam

Can we buff the Steppe Lancer more? Please?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 10:23 AM PDT

We all know the Steppe Lancer is bad, really bad, so I would like it to get buffed. Since I think it's 1 range is pretty cool. Here's a breakdown of the Steppe Lancer.

    Castle Age:

    • Steppe Lancers are worse in every way than a knight except for it's gold cost (40), speed (1.45) and creation time (24). This reduced gold cost, however, is less useful in Castle Age since gold isn't running low but food for those precious villagers is. Steppe Lancers cost 70 food, 10 more than a knight.
    • Thus, Steppe Lancers cost 17% more food than a knight and 53% of the gold in an Age where food is more important than gold, while having inferior statistics to offer.
    • 1v1 with a Fully upgraded Knight the generic Steppe Lancer loses with the knight having 78/120 hp. This means that 21f 26g of resources in the knight are lost from a unit that costs 70f 40g.
    • However, thankfully, there are 2 civs that don't have generic Steppe Lancers (Tatars and Mongols) Mongols lose this fight with the knight having 64/120 hp (loses 28f 35g) and Tatars lose with the Knight having 71/120 hp (loses 24.5f 30.6g).

    Imperial Age:

    • The gold in Imperial Age is a bit more important but the unit is still worse than even Cavaliers and abysmal against Paladins.
    • Cuman ESL are now 5% faster, so are no longer generic.
    • The main advantage of Elite Steppe Lancers are that they are faster and slightly easier to make.

Here is a table showing the results:

Cavalier vs Hp leftover Resources lost
    Cuman Elite Steppe Lancer 80/140 25.3f 32.1g
    Mongols Elite Steppe Lancer 60/140 34.3f 42.9g
    Tatar Elite Steppe Lancer 70/140 30f 37.5g

Paladin vs Hp leftover Resources lost
    Cuman Elite Steppe Lancer 120/180 20f 25g
    Mongols Elite Steppe Lancer 110/180 23.3f 29.2g
    Tatar Elite Steppe Lancer 120/180 20f 25g

There are several other matchups that can happen but this gives you the main gist of Steppe Lancers in melee.

It's pretty much the same vs Archers but this post has already taken me 2 hours to make so you can do the math, but it's Tatars are the best vs archers overall and Mongols are the worst.

    My Recomended Buffs:

    • I think the best buff for Steppe Lancers would be to give them 1 melee armour, reduce the reload time between attacking by between 0.4-0.2s and to maybe give some sort of bonus damage to Villagers so they can be slightly better at raiding as a kind of glass cannon raider.

Possible Buffs (if you don't like mine):

    • More Attack (+1 attack?)
    • More HP (+10 hp?)
    • Bonuses to other units (+4 vs Cavalry>)
    • Faster creation time (<18s creation time?)
    • Cheaper cost (65f? 35g?)
    • Faster movement speed (1.5)
    • Cheaper upgrades (800f 500g Elite upgrade?)
    • More pierce armour* (+1 pierce armour?)
*(unit is dubbed "weak vs archers" in tech tree)

I hope you agree with my recomende buffd but if you don't, tell me which other buffs you like best in the comments below!
