Strategy Thesis of the Week: In Empire Wars, you should trade army for (idling) eco

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 07:49 AM PDT

One day ahead of the 4th season of AoE's biggest Empire-Wars-tournament, I want to share a thesis that I had during the last Red Bull Wololo.

Disclaimer: That stuff is rather supposed to be thought provoking than 100% true and I'll go for some clickbaitish headline now and then to get the discussion rolling. So, feel free to give your opinion and don't be too angry about me. ;) Also I want to add that my view will, in some cases, not translate into top-level-meta because the time-windows and their use is tighter up there, but with a current Elo of 1600-1700, my thoughts should be somewhat applicable for 98% of the player base.

I think there is a major and very general meta difference between RM and EW: When you jump into the opponent's base to trade your army for opponent economy, that tends to lose you the game in high level RM. I think, in EW it tends to win you the game.

The reason for that is, and I think it sounds so trivial that you would intuitively assume it's wrong: You start with more eco and that's why you can make more army. It sounds wrong because more eco means also quicker upgrades, faster up-times, better boom, so when thinking through it, you'd assume that it actually plays out very similar to regular AoE (RM). But let's take a deeper look.

It is, of course, a generally accepted opinion that EW plays out more aggressively, not only because it starts immediately with army production but also in terms of decision making and playstyle that is rewarded. That doesn't mean though that it's gotta be an advantage to throw your army away. Actually, it tends to be the other way around: In RM you want to trade your army for eco when you can reproduce which is usually the case when you are taking an eco-approach. Aggressive play equals low eco equals you can't afford to lose army.

Here does the difference to EW come into play: When you play "aggressively" in EW, that doesn't mean that you are on low eco. Your eco is not as streamlined as it is in RM. There is no Drush, no early [M@A](mailto:M@A). In RBW, you start with 27 (!!) villagers - the amount that you usually have when you already put out 3-5 scouts, or you have 2 ranges up and pumping. That basically means, that in comparison to an RM-start, you have idled your production for ~2-5 minutes which gives you basically an excess of eco.

This excessive eco usually translates into lots of army, which leads to delaying Castle Age which leads to having a much better eco when reaching Castle Age. I actually checked a few examples of the RBW-3-finals and compared to the KotD-3-finals (which was on a very aggressive Arabia which means even later Castle Age timing) and it seems that in EW you hit Castle Age almost always with 40+ villagers, while you have usually 30-35 in RM on an open map.

    That means that

    • when you lose your army, it's quicker replaced
    • when you idle your opponent's eco, you idle more eco

So for example, when you have 8 Knights and your opponent has 8 Knights as well: You go in, kill vils, force the TCs idle but you lose all your Knights while your opponent keeps his Knights.

    • That scenario in RM: You reproduce 4 Knights in the meantime. Your opponent reproduces maybe 2 or even 0. Still, he is ahead now, he wins the next fight, he will have superior Knight mass forever now and will be able to turn this into an eco lead pretty soon because 20 Knights make more damage than 8 Knights.
    • That scenario in EW: You reproduce 6 Knights in the meantime, because you have more economy. Your opponent reproduces 2 or even 0. Until he attacks you, you reproduce another 6 Knights, your opponent can only produce 4 because of the eco damage you have done. And suddenly both are back on 12 Knights.

Those are absolutely random numbers of course and the reality is much more complex than that, but I hope it illustrates the mechanical difference between a very streamlined eco with very early military in comparison to having an eco with "excessive villagers".

I want to quote our lord and savior here, the current Empire Wars champion who described himself like that when talking about regular RM:

"I trade army for economy. It's maybe not the best approach but it's my playstyle."

Daut said that when he analysed his win over Lierrey in the King of the Desert 3 group stage, sadly it's not on Youtube and I quote from memory. But I can't get over the idea that this small thing that he said about himself is actually what made him able to win the RBW 3. He basically likes to play in a way which happens to be rewarded by the economic logic of Empire Wars.

The counter-example here might be TheViper who struggled a bit in the EW-settings. Check out especially his tournament-ending loss against Villese in RBW 3. He decided to build many TCs with Bulgarians to protect his eco and get an economical lead, but Villese just idled so many of that eco that Viper wasn't able to compete with army even with all the TCs supporting him in the fights. Maybe Vipers approach would have worked with the logic of RM but failed due to the EW-mathematics?

That's btw also a reason why I think that Group C of RBW 4 will be incredible: I think that the playstyles of SongSong and Vinchester do benefit a lot from the EW-format while Viper and Jordan are rather on a small disadvantage. It could become really interesting.

Final note: Of course, you should not always and in any situation throw away your army. It's still the same game. Just the balance is a bit different. For every decision that you make in terms of trading your army, there is lost value and gained value. In EW it's simply that trading for eco has a bit more gained value and the lost value is easier to compensate for. It's small but small things make the difference in top level AoE.

Request for tips translating custom campaigns.

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 06:58 AM PDT

Hi I recently started trying to translate some of non English Written custom campaigns on the workshop, Because I ran out of custom campaigns on the workshop.

I started with translating the rise of the swiss condferation campaign (I haven't uploaded it) I found it was taking me somewhere between 20-30 minutes to find translating one level because I constantly had to switch back between the triggers and google translate copy and pasting back and Furth.

Does anyone have any tips for a faster way to complete this process or any alternative way of doing this.

I have tried editing the campaign files themselves but they were all encrypted upon download, so if anyone knows of a program you can use to edit scenarios outside of the scenarios editor or something like that that would be useful.

Also if anyone has knows a program that can auto translate when hovering over text it would take that to (no idea if that's a thing probably not).

Anyway any advise would be great thanks.

    Need help

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 06:20 AM PDT

I'm playing Aoe 2: DE on steam right now and I swear back in the day you could start a game (skirmish) in dark age with just a town center and few villagers and nothing else. Now I don't seem to find a gamemode suited for that. In death match you get massive amount of resources, in empire wars you start with additional buildings and none of the others fit that either. Any help?

Can Steppe Lancers be considered as weaker versions of Magyar Huszars?
