I don't want this game to die

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 09:44 PM PDT

This is probably the best time I've ever had playing a video game. Community is great for the most part, and despite are doing an amazing work (seriously, thanks DE!) but we're still lacking a lot of social features in the game and I'm afraid that could make the game less accessible for newcomers. Just a simple thing as clan chatting could lead to a more friendly and active community.

I feel like we should also try to spread the word that this community is more alive than ever! Casters and Microsoft are doing an amazing job with this, but what can we do, as players, to increase the interest in the game?

I of course don't have any answers. I've only brought two friends into the game, and one of them is still afraid of 1v1's. I just wanted to let that out of my chest.

I absolutely love this game, and I don't want it to die again. Thank you all of you for playing the game, thanks to the devs and the casters, thank you to everyone for making this such an amazing experience.

i finally beat britons as burmese in the late game!! my greatest nemesis for all time.. terribly messy game: maa+trush into elephants, eating all 3 of his tc, having to eat all 3 again TWICE, stone walling neutral gold, chopping HIS wood, and overspamming vils.. im always sad to delete vils..

1570 Elo 1vs1 but I start with 1000 Elo in TG

    Posted: 19 Aug 2021 11:55 PM PDT

This must be a joke because I need so many wins till I am at my „real tg elo" and first I found It funny but now It is only boring and a time waste... but I really want to play tg. Why is the starting tg elo not connected to the 1vs1 elo?

Top 10: Civs dependent on their Castle UUs

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 06:31 AM PDT

Hi all! Let's imagine that a hacker erases our UU (and UTs that affect only our UU) from Castles, or that there's a mod that disables them. Which civs would suffer more from this mod? Here's my Top10 list:

10.- Byzantines – Cataphract: Byzantines lack Bloodlines and Blast Furnace. They get cheaper pikes/skirms/camels and FU arbalester. That seems enough for a "fast" Imperial into Arb + Siege Ram. Then, cheaper 8 attack Halb + Siege Ram could do the trick (never forgetting the easy access to Skirms and Camels and the availability of BBCs). I feel that there are many civs that could fare much better with these comps (Viks, Eths,… for Arb + Ram and Teutons, Burmese for Halb + Siege). And that's why Byz had another strat for late game to win it. Cataphracts are a powerhouse that makes many redditors write: "don't let Byzantines get to FU Cataphract or you're dead". Cataphracts counter anything except heavy cavalry and massed archers, and that can be dealt with their discounted units. So yes, removing them could cripple Byz chances to get a win in late game.

9.- Sicilians – Serjeant: The Donjon rush has become the Sicilian all-in strat for early game. Serjeants give way to these strat to be viable, letting 1st Donjon builders return to work so that Sicilian eco is not hindered. Once this strat is removed, the Scout rush becomes the best opening for them. Then, Elite Serjeants also have a base 4 pierce armor (+4) = 8, like FU Aztec or Mayan Elite Eagle Warriors. That doesn't mean that they fit the role of Eagles, being so slow, but they are tankier against arrow-fire and can be a good aid for Sicilian pushes. Now with Hauberk Cavaliers, the role of Serjeants against archer civs in late game is a little less important, but they're still a great counter to a pike Siege push. So removing Serjeants would negatively affect both early and late-game for Sicilians.

8.- Italians – Genoese Crossbowman: No Halbs and no camels leave Italians on a bad position against strong Camel/Cavalry. That leaves good monks and Pikemen as the only options against them in Castle Age. Cav archers could also be a problem, and Skirmishers could be the only way against them if we remove the UU. In late game, discounted HCs with Pikes and FU Hussars as a meatshield could be the only option against cavalry, but indeed removing GXbows would hurt Italians. Pavise arbalesters and Condottieros and discounted BBCs still remain as an option for them if not facing a strong cavalry civ on Arena, and their chances against top water civs (Ports, Viks, Malay, Japs) would remain the same, while struggling a bit more against other cav, camel or cav archer options like Koreans, Saracens and Spanish.

7.- Slavs – Boyar: A unit that cost effectively kills a FU Paladin cannot be disregarded. Slavs are the closest to a "standard" infantry-cavalry-siege civ, with a bonus towards them all. The problem is that an unexpected answer to knight rushes (especially strong ones like Teutons, Bulgarians or Liths with relics) could be Boyars, who have now become a great counter to the Knight-line. Boyars are also a bit harder to counter than Knights for Camel civs (except Sicilians). They also fare like Paladins against Archers/Cav Archers (just taking a few less shots to die). So Boyars take the spot between Scouts into Knights/Cavaliers and Druzhina infantry/Siege, giving Slavs the versatility that this civ with bad archers would need against strong cavalry civs. Removing them lowers Slav power.

6.- Vietnamese – Rattan Archer: Viets are the anti-archer archer civ, with their tankier Archery Range units that could take a couple more of hits or arrows before dying. But, what scares most of Archer civs are Rattan Archers, who effectively counter any other archery range unit. This mixture between an Arbalester and a Skirmisher gives a bad time to civs like Britons and Ethiopians, who would need to appeal to Onagers to counter these guys. If we remove Rattans, maybe 48HP arbs and/or Imperial Skirmishers could fit the role, though lacking both the mobility and power of Rattans, and needing to upgrade 2 units instead of one if mixed. This lack of mobility also negatively affects Onager dodging. Looking at the low win rate of Viets, removing their best unit would hurt a lot.

5.- Mongols – Mangudai: If you remove the "uncounterable" unit from the Mongol tech tree, your late game composition will suffer a lot due to the Mangudai bonus attack against siege. You'd end up with faster firing, armor lacking HCAs, and the task of sniping enemy siege would be for 117HP Hussars and your Drill siege (which is not bad either). Your gameplay doesn't change too much, knowing that HCAs are easier to mass than Mangudai, due to the Castle dependence, but it's absolutely true that Mongols, without their UU, are much less scary.

4.- Mayans – Plumed Archer: Mayans' playstyle usually includes m@a into archers, then xbows/arbs and El Dorado Eagles for late game. But Plumes are very useful units due to a) countering strong infantry civs (Viks, Japs, Aztecs) or civs who go for Champs against Eagles b) countering archer civs (Plumes eat FU Arbs) c) raiding (even though that role could be fitted using Eagles). Still, discounted arbalesters are a good solution against standard arbalesters or stronger archers (Eths, Brits, Italians, Chukonus,…) and infantry, though in this case, Skirmishers and Mangonels/Onagers would become excellent counters to them, since Plumes' speed and pierce armor make them only very weak to Cavalry or maybe Cavalry archers. Mayans are a meso civ with many less options than standard civs, so if you remove another one, they come very high on this list.

3.- Koreans – War Wagon: Koreans lack Blast Furnace and Bloodlines. Their archers benefit from a wood discount and free armors. But if you leave them without War Wagons, lacking an eco bonus towards any other unit, they would become a very meh civ, with only a few cases in which they could shine (as anti-archer flank in TG, but even then could not switch into anything strong against Eth, Mayan or Brits after these get to their strong archers). If you can't mass WWs, maybe you should build only one Castle to improve Towers and defend the map with them. It seems that War Wagon-less Koreans would become very weak.

2.- Spanish – Conquistador: Let's take a look at the best options for Spanish. FC Conqs, FC Conqs, FC Conqs and… Now seriously, Conquistadors are the core strategy of Spanish in Arena and Nomad, where they shine most. Without them, the best option is going for FU Paladins or Champions (with some gold savings in the blacksmith), which is not an awesome strategy, lacking an eco bonus to support it. The siege + Inquisition monk push could be another option in Arena, but it is slowed by the need of a Castle. On water maps they could try to mass Sniper Cannon Galleons, but again, they lack a bonus towards that production, and they are behind 7 – 8 better civs on water. Spanish without Conquistadors become a lackluster civ.

1.- Goths – Huskarl: What would be of the Goth flood without those bas****s killing any ranged unit, spamming from like 7 Barracks and melting Castles without the need of siege? The flood of 3 pierce armor Champions would be effectively countered with any ranged unit + infantry meatshield, since halbs still could kill mounted units. In the end, even if Goths were able to boom, infantry units would be killed faster than they were produced, and any raid (again ranged units would be twice as effective) would cripple Goth economy to put an end to the flood. Without any doubt, Goths take nº1 in this list.

So, what are your thoughts about the list? Would you include any other civ/UU or change the order of the list? Please let me know! Have a nice weekend!

pls devs give civ builder mods their own category

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 07:58 AM PDT

I used to love shopping around for meme data mods. Small farms with infinite food? Villagers support +5 population space? Bombard elephants launched out of trebs? And of course 9x civ bonus. A few days after every update I'd go sort by Last Updated and pick something funny for casual play.

Then the Civ Builder tool went viral, and the entire data mods category on the DE mods browser is probably 95% random people uploading "lotr civs" or "my OP civs". Plus everyone needs to upload separate mods for the civ and the UI. It's impossible to browse for juicy stuff that feeds my Age of Memes addiction.

Literally unplayable. I can't even use my existing subs since they fell out of maintenance and new patches broke them.

    Anyone know a workaround?

    Player random civ

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 06:08 AM PDT

So I always play random civilization when picking games, for the flavor and fun.

Since HD has come out, I almost exclusively get HD+DE races. There are so many original+conqueror races, but they never pop up. Maybe 1/20? I got the Huns the other night, and it had been the first time in months I recall getting an original race.

Is it my imagination? Bad luck? Anyone else feel the same thing?

[Modding] Looking for a team member for a Custom Campaign

    Posted: 20 Aug 2021 08:01 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm working on a custom campaign for AOE2, I was keen to see if anybody would like to help with some modding? The custom campaign is being voiced over as we speak, map design is done and triggers are about 10% through.

I wanted to see if someone could help create a new civ by replacing an existing civ, replace a hero icon with a custom one, I may also require a couple units to have a really slow decay time and finally edit some existing heroes to create 3 new ones.

So, if anyone is handy with 3D modelling and wanted to give it a go that would be great, if not any help around the other items would be great.

I will credit you in the campaign!
