    One of my favorite things to do in single player campaign is to send a few villagers to the enemy gates early on and put up several layers of stone walls. It locks them inside and instantly incapacities them. Especially with the proper friendly troops to knock back any attempt to break the wall. This works even better on maps where the AI can only access you from across a bridge or shallow water. Anyone else have any funny or game breaking ways to essentially end the campaign mission before it even starts? I'm new (2 weeks playing) to AOE2, by the way. What an amazing game!

    Do people actually enjoy playing like that?

    People on this subreddit are like super obsessed with playing competitively, rushing, having build orders, using counter and trash units and all that stuff. I tried playing like that for a while, but to me it's just not fun. Started playing normally again and the fun in this game came back for me. Dropped to around 1200, but I really don't care about that number. Got no idea whether it's good or bad. I only play ranked cause it results in better more balanced matches. But I just don't care for playing optimally or only playing to win or stuff like that. I just wanna have fun and unless I'm getting absolutely annihilated 2 minutes into the game I'm still having fun when losing. I also block Arabia and prefer Mega Random.

    Noob question: Is it possible to change diplomacy from enemy to ally in AoE:DE single player?

    With a tribute or something, maybe?

    I'm at 61 ranked matches (31-30). My ELO is 809. From looking at (https://ratings.aoe2.se/) I'm ranked in the bottom 17% of players...am I really THAT bad?

    I know I'm not the greatest player but that rating was quite shocking. I have the basics down. I have a build order for the first 25 vils, I know basic counters, and I use a few hotkeys.

    Am I missing something or is the player base of this game really that advanced?

    A simple way to make Steppe Lancers useful without making them broken.

    In your stables, you have your anti-monk scout trash unit, you have your all-purpose cavalry, you have your anti-cavalry cavalry, and you have your high HP slow cavalry. All of these have certain uses, with elephants being more niche but certainly still strong on maps like Socotra.

    The stables is already stacked--in what situation would a cuman, mongol and tatar player make yet another type of cavalry? When they're on the defensive.

    Give them a slight bonus vs siege weapons. That's it. When the player is on the defensive being pummeled by mangonels, they can now make a few fast cavalry units that can better reach a mangonel even if it's surrounded by pikemen because of the long spear that can attack at range. With the bonus vs siege weapons and their cheaper gold cost, it will be worth it to make a few vs mangonels.

    Remember: their range already allows them to attack through walls! They are already decent against rams since they can attack them from the other side. If they're ever gonna have a niche use, this is it!

    It's a buff that breaks nothing about the game and gives Steppe Lancers a role.

    Is the AI on your team just worse than enemy AI?

    4v4s with 7 AIs on arabia. At least up till early castle the AI still plays standard, i.e., as if it's 2 individual 2v2s. In at least the past 10 games my team's other side always loses. Every single time. I play pocket and I can destroy the enemy flank on my side by early castle. Up to this point the enemy pocket on my side is entirely focused on my side. Once the enemy flank is dead their other pocket actually sends some units over to my side, so my team's other side is fighting against <2 players, and my other pocket doesn't come to help so they have the full 2 players, yet somehow by early imp my other flank is always almost dead with second to last score. It's not because of sling either, I checked last game and the enemy team slung 800 res total. Is the AI somehow weaker when it's on your team? I'm not complaining it's an interesting challenge, just want to know if there's some weird behavior here.

    Longswordsmen with 90 HP, but no Squires, Supplies or Arson

    Note: this has no bearing on Imperial Age. I was thinking give the Champion even more HP but it was just a poor man's Choson

    As we get close to beta release, I noticed something very peculiar today. None of the major aoe 2 streamers are on todat , except maybe memb but saw him on like 8 hours ago. Intrestting

    Me thinks the beta has started or atleast the invites haaave gone out and they are playing it., even their twitters are silent probably cuz of NDA.

    Future DLC Prediction

    Using the themes of the current DLC's, I think I have come up with some ideas as to what we might expect in future instalments. (This is all speculation based on the idea that we are getting more, soooo just run with it.)

    Firstly, the where. Each DLC has been set in a rough part of the world, so we should look for patterns to see where we can expect the next ones to be. The first requirement is to contain at least two civilisations that existed between roughly 400-1599 CE and interacted with other parts of the world, the second is that it should contain at least one civilisation already in the game that lacks a full campaign, and the third seems to be to not clash with a previous DLC released for the HD version of Age of Empires 2 or DE (This means South-East Asia, Africa and Central Asia are probably out).

    Looking at the list of locations this leaves us with, we should expect the most likely candidates to be...

    -The Middle East

    -East Asia

    -The Americas(?)

    Now, going by this assumption, what would potentially come with these two?

    The Middle East:
    I am not going to pretend to be an expert on the area, but from what I can gather, Georgia and Armenia seem like likely candidates. Both had empires, and both are in a relevant location and interacted with Middle Eastern civilisations.

    Now as for the pre-existing civ that gets a full campaign, I would strongly bet on the Persians for this. Even though the Turks also lack a campaign, their two historical battles cover very important parts of their history (and essentially rules out some historical individuals), while the one Persian battle does not. (Also it would be a great opportunity to give the Persians the Central Asian building architecture...just saying)

    East Asia:
    This one I have seen less talk of, but one civilisation instantly comes to mind for inclusion; the Tanguts. Again, had an empire, lived during the right time period, and are different enough from other civilisations that are already included to warrant being added. I would say Tibetans would be a perfect 2nd choice...but we all know that's not going to happen...

    And as for the civ to get a campaign, the best example would be the Chinese. Like the situation with the Turks and the Persians, one of the other civilisations in that part of the world (Japanese) already has two historical battles that cover important characters from their history. Meanwhile the Chinese do not, with the Warring States period and the legendary figures involved (Cao Cao, Lu-Bu etc etc) being excellent campaign material.

    The Americas(?):
    A questionable choice here, mostly because some of the potential civilisations would require a new architecture set (There is only so far the Meso-American one can stretch). Plus the lack of horses is an issue, with how much variety you can get out of a civ, plus if the Eagle Warrior line is even accurate to that civilisation.
    Here the prime candidate would be the Mississippians; who occupied a large part of North America between 800-1600 CE, and built large cities. A second North American civilisation might then be picked to make use of a new architecture set, but my knowledge falls flat here.

    Back to the pre-existing civilisations however, well there is only one candidate left, the Mayans. So yeah, them.

    I hope this was a fun little read that gets people thinking about where future DLCs might go :)
