    Who's Lord Basse?

What would a civ called "Europeans" that represent all of Europe in a generic way look like?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 06:15 AM PDT

Sometimes I wonder why Mayans are an archer civ. Why Chinese don't get hand cannoneers (I know it's because balance issues but also they made one civ to represent a huge group of people like the "Indians" civ). Or like Italians are a civ when "Italy" was at time lots of estate-cities.

But what if Devs just gave the same treatment to Europe as a whole? What the tech tree, bonus, UU would look like?

I love the expansion--the campaigns, the new civs--but the latest matchmaking issues are making it near impossible to enjoy the game

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 01:00 AM PDT

Normally I try and give it the devs credit where credit is due. I think a lot of people unnecessarily cast them as villains. DE is clearly a labor of love from a team that has helped revive this series from it's place in the underground. They're working with a very old engine and very old code, things are gonna break. But if it's near impossible to get match-made game or even just a lobby without restarting the game two or three times, burning a scented candle, and offering a prayer, it's a real problem worthy of a hot-fix. This can't last a whole month or two until the next patch. You did such great work on the new content, let me play it.

Hard AI decided that my straggler trees were the best woodline on the new Arabia

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 09:15 AM PDT

Can we get mixed difficulty AI?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 06:53 AM PDT

Mixed difficulty AI is a basic feature of every RTS I can think of aside from this one. Would be great for games of varying player skill to match an AI to their relative skill level.

    4-civ off-meta teams for fun!

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 03:08 AM PDT

    Hi all!

Today I bring you a fun post. I'm pretty sure this has already been done, but I'd like to do a small list of 4-civ-teams that would make an interesting off-meta alliance. To me, the best 4-civ Team includes Mayans and Britons as flanks, and Franks and Persians as pockets (Teutons or Slavs could replace Persians, but I feel more useful the Persian team Bonus). So let's go!

1.- Camel Power. Saracens and Chinese as flanks and Berbers and Indians as pockets. Saracens can market abuse for straight archers and Chinese have a great eco. They've got enough arguments to resist strong flanks. Indians have a great booming potential, and Berbers can appeal to their great camel + knight comp to face enemy cav. The Indian Team Bonus would have a strong impact on the rest of the civs, since camels, mamelukes and Camel Archers would benefit from it. The Berber switch into Camel Archers would counter enemy Cav Archers and the raiding potential of them would be increased. Then mamelukes, Imperial Camels and discounted Berber camels could face any cav composition. Chukonu can also benefit from the Saracen team bonus for a stronger building razing.

2.- "Mediterranean" kaboom. Italians and Portuguese as flanks, Turks and Spanish as pockets. (NB: I know that the Mediterranean Sea doesn't reach Portugal). The main problem of these guys is getting to their powerhouses, lacking strong eco bonuses. But, with the Turk team bonus helping with gunpowder units, a mass of Jannis, HCs, BBCs, Conqs and Organ guns could bring down any unit comp. As I said, the beginning could be hard, with discounted archers for Ports, discounted Age advance for Italians and free Cartography for all as the only early bonuses. But, once Turks (who'd need to open scouts) gold collection gets going and the rest build castles, they could face anything! If they get to trading (+ Italian Silk route) , the spam of gunpowder could be unstoppable thanks to the Spanish team bonus!

EDIT: New Bohemians could replace any of them (except Turks) for Hussite Wagon + Houfnice + Castle Age HCs. It would no longer be called "Mediterranean". If Bohemians replace Turks, it would become the TRADE TEAM with the combination of faster working markets, higher trade gold generation, Italian Silk route for trade cart discount and standard gold discount for Portuguese

3.- Unique Unit Mayhem. Koreans and Vietnamese as flanks, Byzantines and Berbers as pockets. The best two anti-archer civs could be protected from the best Archer flank rushers. I'd like to ask what could counter a mass of Cataphracts, Camel Archers, Rattan Archers and War Wagons. Only strong paladins or Boyars, I feel. But both pockets can mix discounted camels against those! Now Kasbah becomes very important for UU production and research of the rest of UTs. Berbers could take a more aggressive role and let Byz get to FU Cataphracts. When they get to them, only lots of ranged units or heavy cavalry could stop them. And that would be the role of the rest of the civs' UUs!

4.- Infantry flood. Mayans and Japanese as flanks, Goths and Vikings as pockets. The aim is to get the Goth flood going. Flanks need to be aggressive to buy time for the pockets. Vikings, depending on enemy pockets, could go for knights (even without Bloodlines, they can get to them very fast), or directly sling Goths. If Goths get to 7 Barrack Perfusion Imperial Age, Vikings can go for Berserks against enemy Champions or Arbalesters against HCs or anti-infantry units. El Dorado eagles, halbs or Jap Champions could be created faster for unit support. Other options include Plumed Archers, Samurai or Jap FU HCAs.

5.- Farmer Team. Incas and Chinese as flanks, Slavs and Teutons as pockets. This is a bit fan made, since it includes 4 civs with bonuses for Farms (excluding Franks, Sicilians,...). But, with the latest buff to Boyars, this would make a very good team. Camels, and huge masses of Archers and Cav Archers pose a threat to Paladins and Boyars, but Incas have Kamayuks and 10 pierce armor Eagles, and Chinese have Chukonus to deal with them.

6.-Relic Party. Burmese and Aztecs as flanks, Burgundians and Lithuanians as pockets. (Fan made). Relics become visible for all, would produce +33% gold, would also produce food, and each one of them garrisoned gives +1 to Knights and Leitis. If Liths get 4 relics (Aztec Burm Burg eco would need to help them), the team would have a great edge. To get there, Burmese and Aztecs are very odd flanks, that should make the most of their eco bonuses. Then, depending on the damage made or received, Burmese could go for Arambai or Mounted units (late game even infantry), and Aztecs could switch to eagles and mix siege against pure Archer civs.

So that's it! Notice that I haven't included many times civs that are top tier, I don't pretend to sell that these combos are the best. Just that they'd be fun to play! So, tell me about 4-civ combos you've tried or would be fun to try! Did you like any of the ones proposed?

    Have a nice day!

    The best x256 civilization

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 11:37 PM PDT

I was messing around with the "going above and beyond" cheat against 7 hard AI in post-imperial just for fun.

I tried out a few civs, but I found the Aztecs had the best unique techs for a strong comp. +1 skirm attack/range and +4 infantry damage is hard to beat. You stack a bunch of atlatl skirm techs and pretty soon they're throwing them towards the moon lol. +4 infantry attack is a fun one to stack as well.

Take both of those techs, plus tanky monks (made even tankier) and you have a pretty good recipe for success.

    Any other strong contenders?

Edit: Your milage may vary, as I usually play against a bunch of hard AI on infinite resources lol

New Arabia means waypoint scouting is back in!

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 02:26 AM PDT

Just title really. You can waypoint along the edges of the map and you'll most likely find the woodlines as they'll always be at the back. It's not the most efficient but if you're having problems with your micro/boar lures etc, just send that scout jogging along and don't worry about going under a TC.

    Advice for a newcomer

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 03:37 AM PDT

I haven't played RTS in awhile, and I have never played AoE2. That being said I have played AoE3 10 years ago and a lot of Starcraft 2. So I have basic skills burned in brain like learning the hotkeys right away, constant villager production, and base management while raiding and small skirmishes. I suppose I am just seeking advice on how to improve the fastest because coming into a game with so many Civs has been a bit overwhelming. I'm more of a rush player most likely because when I was younger I never had a good computer so I would get massive stutters if I let the game go to long and to max pop 😂 Also huge bummer you can't add friends to an in-game friends list? Or am I completely shitting the bed on not figuring that out? Either way feel free to add me on Steam: topeg__ The game feels a bit lonely right now! Anyways, thanks in advice if anyone replys!

Ps- Haven't tried ranked yet, but I've done ~25 Quickmatch random maps.

This is not so game relevant but bit thinking of it I am bit disappointed he wasn't in campaign more and that Also he still has Generic Hussar skín instead of winged one. I think it would be Cool if other heroes got their len skin aswel. For example Genghis Khan, Tamerlane.....

    Quality of Life idea

Played Diablo II: Resurrected this weekend, there is a feature that allow to switch between old and new graphics on fly. I realised that it would awesome if we could see flat ground without hills and mountains when we are in construction mode.

    https://preview.redd.it/ybwyq9a8kmh71.png?width=1283&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ccec0e6fbc7f5572145f732cd5c2122d39a24d5

So we can see holes in our walls and even quickwalling effectively on high/low ground. What do you think about this idea? Maybe there is already exists a mod?

Am I the only one who's having a hard time joining a lobby in the browser? Refreshing still put old lobbies that don't exist anymore. It gives me errors everytime.

PSA: Restart AOE after each match, it increases the likelihood of finding a ranked match

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 01:59 PM PDT

If you don't restart your game between matches (this includes skirimish v AI, campaign etc) it increases the odds of a getting a timeout/hang during countdown or search for a match.

It seems to be a "sometimes works" work around to the current issue finding matches..
