Living in non time-zone friendly RBW5, wheres the best place to catch up on all the games?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2021 02:24 AM PDT

    Hi everyone.

Hyped up for the comp which is starting in just under 3 hours.

However time zones are a thing, in Aus/NZ we can't really watch the matches unless we stay up from Midnight - Midday, which obviously can't be done with work/life. Wondering where I/we can catch up on all the games? Will T90 have them all on his channel or will someone else?

    Thanks folks.

Are Persians playable in 1v1 RM?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2021 12:35 AM PDT

So as I'm looking through various civs and testing things out, I thought about Persians for a main. They do get a full cavalry tree, gunpowder, thrash xbows, lots of eco upgrades and obviously the mighty War Elephant. But their civ bonuses look rather weird to me, there being only two of them, one of which doesn't seem to do anything (50 food 50 wood at game start) and the other sounds pretty good, but I'm not sure just how useful it could be (Town Centres and Docks get double hp and work 10%/15%/20% faster from Feudal onwards).

I like War Elephant as a unit, but I am aware they're pretty exploitable with either Halbs or siege or monks, and can't be massed. And also I haven't really seen Persians either being played at top level nor mentioned in any tier lists or anything like that. So, are they worth it? And if not, then what's the best elephant-focused civ out of the Rise of the Rajas ones?

11 September: The Day the Winged Hussars Arrived

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 10:05 AM PDT

The date 9/11 sadly stands for something else these days, but in 1683 it was the day the forces of the West defeated the Islamic Ottoman Empire.

In light of the latest AoE2 expansion, here's some history worth knowing.

The Ottoman Turks laid siege to Vienna for two months, but former Christian enemies including the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Holy Roman Empire formed the Holy League to defend Europe. On 11 September, they met in battle on the Kahlenberg (Bald Mountain) outside the city, and then followed the largest cavalry charge in history: 18000 horses, led by 3000 Winged Hussars under Polish king Jan Sobieski the third.

(Contrary to AoE2, Winged Hussars were not light cavalry - they were some of the heaviest cavalry around at the time.)

It was a complete victory, the Ottomans never were a real threat to Europe again, and after Kahlenberg the Holy Roman Empire managed to take all of the Magyar lands (Hungary) back from the Ottomans.

Legend has it that the battle also led to the invention of the croissant, the bagel, and introduced coffee to Europe after it was captured by the wagonload in the abandoned Ottoman camp. If you like Metal, it's commemorated in the Sabaton song When the Winged Hussars Arrived (the link is to a version that has clips from a 2012 film about the battle as the video).

    We remember
    in September
    the night Vienna was freed
    we made the enemy bleed!

Are there any good YouTube video tutorials on mid-late game?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2021 02:18 AM PDT

I see plenty on early game eco, but nothing really saying how to defeat specific situations. For instance say there's a castle drop outside my walks with a force around it, how to deal with that.

Or military strategy in general, like how to manage/micro your army

Playing as an Archer civ vs a Knight civ (Arabia Strategy)

    Posted: 12 Sep 2021 06:08 PM PDT

Hi folks wanted some advice on how to play archers against a cavalry civ.

I am usually a cavalry player and reached a PR of 1160. Standard play is Scouts ->Knights or Drush -> Knights. In Castle Age I usually play with 2 stable knights + 1 Range Skirms (add siege in some cases if skirms are heavily outnumbered or if i need to break in). 2S Knights + 1R Skirms is usually a very good comp to counter xbows in my experience, especially if the Knights have +2 and the Skirms have bodkin.

I started playing archers recently to improve that aspect of the game - currently trying to play MAA -> Archers with Japs/Viets/Britons, and I can immediately feel playing archers is extremely snowbally which doesn't allow for even the slightest of mistakes. If my xbows are found by enemy knights in the open, its usually a slaughter (and my hit and run micro isnt the best).

I am aware that playing archers requires a good understanding of time windows for attacking - late feudal, early castle and early imp. Could someone provide guidance on how to identify these windows? What are some good compositions in mid castle and early imp? Often while believing that I'd be able to attack the enemy in late feudal, I'd send my feudal archers over only to see the enemy having castled and having 4-5 knights (+1) ready which make easy work of ~15 archers.

TLDR - What are the good time windows for archer players to take fights against cav civs going knight+skirm? What are good army compositions in castle and imp?

    Thanks in advance!

I would love that malians change gets reverted

    Posted: 13 Sep 2021 04:07 AM PDT

Maybe it's an unpopular opinion, but I prefer an overlapping bonus (we already have some, like indian and turks +1 PA or light cav in castle age) than changing perfectly working old civs identity just to make room for new ones.

Before the change, there was general consensus that malians were one of the best (maybe even the best) designed civ in the game. They were unique, they were very funny to play since you were incentivized to play aggressive and you had all the tools needed to do it, without being frustrating at all to play against them, they were also very well balanced since they did well in a variety of maps without being really OP in any of them, they saw solid tournament usage aswell.

Right now, the change took away quite some aggression potential from them, giving in exchange a bonus that feels completely out of place for a civ that struggles in the transition to imp. It's also quite sad to give to an aggressive civ a bonus which is basically designed to play passive and camp forever, since we have already top tier civs that thrives with that kind of playstyle, and in some situation can be pretty frustrating to play against that (just imagine being an archer civs versus a never ending champskarls spam).

Please give us back old malians
