    Devs please, a server maintenance on a Friday night is just silly

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 01:03 PM PDT

    I mean common! For many of us this is the only chance we'd get to play guilt free. Please devs have them in the morning on a Monday or something, please.

    [RBW5] Will we have more off-meta strats this time? And what could they look like?

    Would you been interested in an edited “road to 2k” ranked elo YouTube series of a smooth brain learning the game for the proper first time?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 04:51 AM PDT

    Pretty much the title, I used to play when my dad showed me when I was 12, now ten years later I actually understand the serious aspects to the game and want to get to 2k elo. So would you be interested in an edited YouTube series about my journey to getting to 2k elo (if I can) from never playing ranked before, series will most certainly have a comedic undertone.

    Funny transport ship glitch in Scenario Editor

    Funny transport ship glitch in Scenario Editor

    I'm planning a custom scenario and was testing a bunch of random stuff, and I accidentally did this:

    https://preview.redd.it/s7rj38jk9vm71.png?width=1914&format=png&auto=webp&s=48ed237b8c9ffea90d0c211dfaf9f2b5b201e997

    If you use triggers to create a garrisoned unit inside a transport ship and then use [works with normal garrisoning too, but you obv can't garrison a castle inside a ship without triggers] the replace object trigger to replace the ship, the garrison flag remains attached to the unit. They even run around with it. I tried to replace garrisoned buildings with units but no building worked; they didn't keep the building's flags.

    EDIT: I was so amused by this I didn't notice this before: the flag remains because the unit that was garrisoned inside the ship is now inside the object. This also works for multiple units. For example, you could garrison 5 archers in the ship, replace the ship with a hussar, and then you'd have 5 archers garrisoned inside the hussar, which you can then let out of the hussar. After you let them out the hussar still has the flag though.

    EDIT 2: I just tried a building...this is hilarious. I garrisoned a castle inside the ship and replaced it with a hussar. The castle remains in the hussar. Once the hussar is on land, you can ungarrison the castle and it will appear on the ground.

    EDIT 3: this just keeps getting better...you can use modify attribute to increase the storage capacity of the ship and put in tons of units, then replace it. So you could end up with, say, a champion with 100 archers inside of him that he can let out one by one or in big batches.

    [Statistics] The Desertification of Arabia Episode 2

    [Statistics] The Desertification of Arabia Episode 2

    Last year, after we got introduced to the "New" Arabia that DE brought us, I made a detailed comparison between the different Arabia's we had back then, including AOC and all tournament Arabia maps. Showing the different between the amount of trees each player has around his TC in each version of Arabia. DE Arabia got the lowest score, the most deserted map among all version, ironically including King Of The Desert maps.

    Now there is a "Newer" version of Arabia, the wonderful T-West put it to a test, serving a lovely deep analysis the Arabia map generation. All three version of it. (AOC, Old DE, New DE)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2xnhsgN_ns&ab_channel=T-West
    Watching it is highly recommended.

    On top that, recently I've made a little comparison between Runestones and Arabia's. With a screenshot of the different maps that tells everything. Where I suggested to reduce the amount of woodlines yet increasing the size of the woodlines.

    It all comes down to the starting number of trees each player has within a reasonable amount of tiles from his TC. It's less about the shallow terminology of "Open" map or "Wallable" map. There is almost a 33% decrease in the amount of trees, a fixed magical number of 67 trees is what dictating the meta.

    Developers keep messing up with the organic generation of the map and the result is always an artificial awfulness. Tiny woodlines that every fletchingless Archer can range, however multiple amount of them which massively helps with Potato-style walling, or even worse bridge walling to the edge of the map.

    The worst part comes at Castle Age where every base turn into a monsterous city of mass Town Centers in order to secure tiny woodlines. Encouraging booming over aggression. The walling meta is definitely out of control, the developers are indeed trying to rule it, however failing to do so.

    Besides all that, the common misconception that AOC Arabia used to be more open is yet again proved to be wrong. We had more trees per TC, yet it felt more open, and that's the absolute brilliancy of mother nature, of the simple raw plain generation of the Arabia map we had for 20 years.

    Let me know what you guys think of it. Should the Developers cease from abusing Arabia or perhaps we need it to be adjusted frequently?

    Thank you for reading, and again, thank you T-West for your scientific content!

    Weird chats in 1v1 ranked (850 ELO)

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 07:52 AM PDT

    Played a 1v1 against someone the other day and all was starting normal. I got sheep under tc and scout moving, typed "glhf" to opponent and a few minutes later he says "FC or drush?" Assuming he was asking me what strat I was going to do I said "why would I tell you?" He replied "no, I've giving you the option."

    Anybody else been asked a similar question? Why would he/she want me to know what strat he's going to open with?

    What if we switched the stone discount for Franks and Incas?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 02:41 PM PDT

    Essentially giving Incas -25% stone cost for all buildings and Franks -15% stone cost for castles

    Incas Towers: 50w 106s -> 50w 94s,

    Incas TC: 275w 85s -> 275w 75s,

    Inca Castle: 650s -> 488s

    Inca stone walls stay at 4s

    Franks Castle: 488s -> 553s

    Saturday Shitpost: With the new Arabia, your opponent is more likely to find your third gold than you. Same goes for you and your opponent's third gold.

    Posted: 11 Sep 2021 06:28 AM PDT

    It has now been 3-4 straight games on Arabia where I've mined my opponent's 3rd gold and my opponent has mined mine. I just find my main and secondary gold and stone piles and go toward my opponent.

    I generally manage to find my opponent's remote third gold without fail, while I fail to find my own, even after I've run out and need to send 5-6 villagers into the dark to try and find it.

    I think I'm going to ping my opponent about his third gold in the hopes that he/she does the same favour lol.

    How do you counter Malian non-stop M@A/Longswords?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 01:12 PM PDT

    Now, I should start off by saying that obviously an extremely strong, high-level micro-player probably could quick-wall+archer micro their way out of this, but at low-to-mid level ELOs I just don't see any realistic way of countering this strategy.

    I had someone use this strat against me, and I then tried it myself (~1250 ELO) and have wrecked everyone I've tried it against so far. Essentially, it's like a standard M@A rush, except you never stop making M@A and build a 2nd barracks in Feudal. Without constant, well-executed archer micro, there is no way for the opponent to realistically stop the push, since the M@A are so tanky, and one miss-micro can result in a lot of dead archers. Counter-raiding with scouts can work, but then the attacker's got 2 barracks at home ready to pump out spears.

    The biggest concern here is that if the M@A production starts outpacing the rate at which the defending player can take them down, the attacker can start bashing down production buildings. I took out one of the Archery Ranges of the opponent with a group of ~10 M@A with another group of ~5 chasing his archers around the other side of his base. If the game does go to castle, the Malian player can start mixing in pikes against knights, and the Longswords will start taking 30(!) FU crossbow arrows at this point!

    I'm just curious how exactly one is supposed to stop this? Feels like a mini-huskarl flood in Feudal. I guess going M@A of their own could work? But that's an awkward transition if you've already invested in Archery Ranges/Stables.

    Any ideas/suggestions?

    Least Boom-y of the Campaigns?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2021 04:44 PM PDT

    One of the benefits of all the server issues recently is that I've had a change to play some of the campaigns. Most I'm trying for the first time; back in the day I only played the AoK/AoC ones, plus Gajah Madah in 2018 for some reason. I have to say, playing them on Hard is quite challenging (even as an intermediate ranked player!) - I started with Tamerlane and have had to try most of the scenarios in it more than once. However, I feel like I've got the formula figured out - make a few castles for the AI to throw itself against, boom like a madman, make massive deathball / spam hussar, complete objectives.

    Once I finish Tamerlane, I wonder if anyone has thoughts on the campaign that follows that pattern (castle / boom / destroy all with deathball) the least? Maybe one with more of the RPG-style scenarios, or limited armies that you have to keep alive, or other unique traits to spice them up?
