Why Arabia doesn't have cliffs anymore?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2021 12:34 AM PDT

I have been on and off the game many times. Started on Voobly where there used to be Oasis and Cliffs on Arabia.

I just now realised I haven't been seeing cliffs ever since I moved to DE start of this year. Any particular reason?

How do you solve a problem like elephants?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2021 07:32 AM PDT

It seems to be widely believed that elephants don't get enough use. That's been my experience too - I don't see them often, I don't make them very often. Sometimes I make them because they look cool and don't really have much success. The reasons for this are threefold (and interrelated): they're expensive, they're slow, they're easily countered. Why make lumbering elephants when you can have knights whizzing over the map breaking shit? They're countered easily by the spear line, and they're so slow and expensive that if your opponent has monks around, you might as well be donating them your army for nothing.

The thing is, they're a core unit for four civs who have significant bonuses and UTs towards them which are completely going to waste. They're also - not to labour the point - cool. Battle elephants! War elephants! Ballista elephants! Elephants are cool. Often when people post civ ideas or balances changes on here, it will include a way to fix elephants to make them more viable, more widely used, so there's clearly an appetite for it, but it always runs into a similar problem - as soon as you remove a counter for elephants, they suddenly feel super OP. They're a bit of a glass cannon. Either you counter them and they're crap, or you don't and they run you over. Maybe that's a fine way to be, but if it's resulting in the unit not being made very often then I don't think it's very good for the variety of the game.

So, how do people fix them, and why doesn't it work?

    Monks

There are a few ideas around this. Only Malay get the Heresy tech, and they also get their elephants cheaper. Coincidentally, Malay are probably the civ most likely to make elephants in my experience, and they're missing numerous stable and blacksmith techs to make them stronger. What happens if you give Heresy to the Khmer, the Burmese, the Vietnamese? It's an expensive tech, so it's still a huge investment in the lategame to make a still expensive unit viable. And after that you can still counter with the spear line. Does elephants which can't be converted until a 1000g Imperial Age tech result in them being too strong?

Okay, maybe it does. So there are other options. Some have suggested a conversion resistance, though that is arguably stronger than Heresy in some circumstances (faster Khmer elephants for example might rather have this to kill the monks rather than lose the ele). Maybe only as an expensive Imperial Age UT. Others have said conversion immunity, which is the really extreme end and I think would definitely be broken.

Honestly I'm find with Heresy being more widely available. It's still super expensive and still requires loads of investment - elephants aren't cheap, the elite upgrade isn't cheap, it's a power spike but you might be dead before then (and that 1000g could have gone on something more useful than eles). Plus it still kills the expensive elephant which the monk player might well be fine with.

    Expense

They're expensive. Malay get them cheaper, so Malay are more likely to make elephants (especially on Hideout, especially when you meant to pick magyard). Why not expand that principle? Make them cheaper across the board, with a further bonus for Malay (or perhaps replace the Malay bonus with something else, creation speed? Something not elephant related? Don't know). Would we see more elephants? The good thing about this is you can tune the discount just enough that they're more viable without making them so cheap that everyone is swarming with elephants constantly which can't be stopped.

    Spears

I don't think spear resistant elephants is a good idea under any circumstances. They're trash and easy to counter with other stuff. The balance here seems about right to me. But, for the sake of completeness, maybe we could consider something like a reduction in bonus damage?

    Speed

So this is related to the monks: elephants are easier to convert because they lumber along like it's a Sunday afternoon and they're going to the supermarket. It takes them a while to get into position. In principle this suits the concept of a strong, high HP, tanky unit. In practice, how much would it imbalance things if they were able to zip about a bit more? Khmer elephants already go faster and it doesn't seem to make much difference - I've seen people say that it means you can raid with them. Let me say that I have never in my life been raided by an elephant. I did once raid an enemy woodline with elephants, but that's because the forward stable was about four tiles away, so I'm not sure that counts.

    They're Fine

The last option is just: shut up man, they're fine! So they're situational, that's not a problem. Situational units have their place. If you hide that you're making elephants then it can be a game winning surprise if they don't already have monks or spears massed and upgrades. And anyway, you're exaggerating how little they're used! I see them all the time at my higher/lower ELO than you, get out of your bubble! All four of the Battle Elephant civs are in good shape at the moment, and both Malay and Khmer can still get use out of them with super fast uptimes - Castle Age elephants still kill Feudal Age spears my friend! Plus Vietnamese elephants just got a buff making them tankier, just use them as a meatshield and stop complaining. Extra pierce armour on the Burmese ones too. So what if people still aren't making them? Maybe they will soon! The meta is always shifting.

I'll try not to delete this one as soon as nine people tell me I'm wrong (no promises).

Can you hide your real name in your Facebook gaming when in Chat?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 09:41 AM PDT

I like separation between my online life and IRL. I do not want to see my full name and links to my facebook account when I spam chat in T90 stream . It is creepy. I like to be Fishyrabbit online and <insert real name here> IRL.

Is there anyway of hiding this and just use my Tag?

Do I have to create a separate Facebook account for Fishyrabbit to have separation? I am pretty sure this is against the Facebook terms of service.

I have been kind of on the fence about Facebook gaming but this is a real issue for me.

    AOE2:DE Khitans Civ Concept

    Posted: 23 Oct 2021 07:08 AM PDT

Helo guy. This time, Ibrought you another civ, who presented the East Asian Nomads before the Mongols, the Khitan, whose famous for their Liao and Qara-Khitai (Yes, the one in Genghis 1&2). So, let jump in and leave a comment bellow if you have any opinions.

    Khitans

    Cavalry Archer civ

The Khitans, rised from a nomadic people to a power dominate Northen China for over 200 years (907-1125). They established their own dynasty, the Liao and engage in a triad relationship with the Chinese Song in the south and the Tangurts Xiaxia in the West. After the fall of the Liao dynasty to the Jurchens Jin, a group of Khitans, lead by Yelu Dashi flee westward and finally build their nation, Western Liao (a.k.a Qara-Khitai). This empire ruled Central Asian until it was defeated and finally destroyed by, you guest it, Genghis Khan. The Khitans history may had lot of rises and falls but at the end, many of its legacy still remained as another conquerer dynasty of China learned lot of Liao laws and administration.

Architecture: East Asian (If there would be a Mongols architect then it'd work perfectly)

Language: Khitan ( a now-extinct language but many scripts and vocabullaries remained and recovered to this day thanks to Chinese records).

    Wonder: Liaoyang White Tower

    Civ Bonus:

    • Mills and TC will provide a small trickle of foods when having livestock around

Livestock is the most important resources in the live of nomads and the Khitan is no different. Liao Dynasty economy most importance is sheep, goats and oxes. To reflect this, each sheep placed in 1 title away from your TCs or mills will give you 20 foods per minutes (0,33 per sec). So if you play against Celt, protect your sheep well.

    • Wheelbarrow give extra +25% carry capacity.

Technically, Wheelbarrow allows your vils carry extra 25% more resources ( meaning 15 instead of normal 13) and Hand Cart will increase it to 23 instead of normal 20. This bonus not as strong as Aztecs but having a little bonus seem not hurting much.

    • Scouts and Steppe Lancers and Camel Rider affects by Parthian Tactics.

Khitans are famed for their iron works and they also bought armor from Chinese to bolster their already powerful steppe riders. Estianally, this bonus give your Hussars and Elite Steppe Lancer +1/2 armor and +2 against spear,. This bonus while seem too OP but sadly, they are, again, lacking behind knights and to the Camels, it a nice boost but they don't get halb so in the endthis civ has to replies on Camels for the anti-Paladin part.

    • Cavalry archer gain a +2/+3 vs cavalry in CA/IA.

The Khitans are well knows for their victories against civ with strong cav like the Mongols, Tatars, Cumans, Persian and Turks. This bonus reflect this. It also giving the cav archer an edge against knights which is the dominating force in CA. Help them to improve their raiding capability.

Team Bonus: Can buy sheep in Market for 60 woods.

A little bonus for teamate who love sheep very much like Brits or Tatars. This also reflect the most profitable and the main product of the Khitans, herdables.

    Unique Units:

    • Ordu: Ordu are imperial guard of the Liao dynasty, they are men selected from noble family or chieftain lines of the Khitans. The Orbu are very well trained, most can use various wepon on horse back like lance, bow, mace, sword or even crossbow. Yes, they are a few troop to use a minimature crossbow on horse back, which is very effective against heavy armored target a close range, but in longer range, they lost to larger crossbow of the Chinese. They inspired for the legendary Pislin Guard army in Chinese literature. So, to honor this, I present to you a cav archer that use crossbow.

    Cost: 60 woods, 65 golds

    Training time: 25s

    HP: 60, 70 (Elite)

    Attack: 7, 8 (Elite) pierce

    +2, +3 (Elite)vs Spearman

    Rate of Fire: 2.0

    Frame delay: 20

    Attack delay: 0.63

    Range: 3

    Accuracy: 85%

    Projectile speed: 7

    Melee armor: 0, 1(Elite)

    Pierce armor: 0

Armor classes: Archer, Cavalry archer, Cavalry

    Speed: 1.4

    Line of Sight: 5

Ability: Gain bonus damage equal to 1/2 of target pierce armor (1/10 to Rams and unpacked treb).

The Khitan unique unit is a cavalry archer, so it will benefit from the civ bonus damage against cav, this make them a natural counter to knights and elephants, which have a lot of pierce armor and move slower. However, their lower range than normal cav archer make them weak to lower pierce armor but have higher range and damage units, x-bows for example. This unit ability is gaining a bonus damage equal to 1/2 of target armor, meaning this units can going against traditional cav archer counters like skirm, camel, eagle, rattan archers or huskarls and due to it bonus damage base on pierce armor, it have a better chance to win fight against these units. But still, these units, exept for rattan, have bonus damage against it so it only serve as a soft counter and only fight these units should the sistuation needed, otherwise, it lose to these units in a straight fight. Fighting against Mangudai or Kipchaks is also not a good ideas, Mangudai fire faster and have less pierce armor for you to exploit and Kipchak being cheaper and fire multiple arrows. Against Ram, this units will pack a huge punch to rams and trebs, making it a excellent castle defender.

    Unique Technologies:

    • Orda System: Stables and Archery Ranges provide 10 population space. Stables and Archery Ranges work 20% faster when in 3 titles near a TC or Castle (do not stack).
    • Tielin Army: Spawn at each Castle a group of 4 Cav Acher and 1 Ordu (Limit 5).

    Gunpowder Elephant?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2021 06:14 AM PDT

They are a thing in AoE3 as a cannon elephant.

If a gunpowder elephant were to appear in AoE2 as an imaginary unique unit of Indians, which one would you prefer?

    1. Bombard Elephant (same as Age3, short ranged like a turtle ship, but with splash damage. Good against buildings and massed units)

    2. Elephant Arquebusier (hand Cannoneer on elephant)

What's up with the monks in DE?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2021 05:50 AM PDT

I can't find the patch note anywhere explaining why they move on their own the way they do. I always grouped them up with ranged units and put everyone in group on stand ground, but it doesn't effect monk units for whatever reason now. They just wander off and 99% of the time get themselves killed. It's insanely frustrating to have to deal with this and I wish they would fix this or at the very least, someone could make a MOD fixing this.

Best AOE 2 campaigns that are similar to Longshanks and Jan Zizka?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 11:32 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

I was looking for campaigns similar to the above, they seem to make the most of their unique units

    I played the

    • Franks but their throwing axeman wasn't great
    • Huns Tarkan were okay but just brining Knights was just as effective
    • Burgundians mainly used Knights as Coustillier weren't that great
    • Poles mainly just used their cheaper Knights
    • Lithuanians mainly used just knights unless i was up against the Teutonic Order

I am looking campaigns that use other units the just the knight line or use their unique units plus the knight line

    I found that

    • Longshanks you could mass Longbows
    • Jan Zika gunpowder units cannon, hand cannoneers and wagon to block attacks

It was just a bit different

    Thank you in advance

    Converting or Training War Elephants?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2021 09:37 PM PDT

So do you like to mass elephants through conversion by playing as a civ with good monks against Persians, massing elephants with your monks,

Or playing as Persians themselves, and slowly training your elephant army at your castle?
