    Player motivation for KotD

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 05:47 AM PST

I recently watched a stream of Jordan, who I am a huge fanboy where he talks a bit about KotD IV. Also listened to the Kings and Plebians podcast of Masmorra with Nili and The Viper who I also respect a lot. It doesn't look to me like the players are motivated at all to participate in the tournament and I find it... strange and honestly a bit disrespectful to the host of the tournament (Memb).

In my opinion this is arguably the most prestigious tournament in AOE. After all, 1v1 Arabia is what best represents who is currently the top player on the game. And it's a lot of money. First place gets $20 000. The GL team had a special bootcamp for RBW V and now non of them is even playing AOE 2. How did this sudden change happen? I get it that streamers are into AOE IV currently but still, it's a huge tournament organized by one of the most respected members of the community. You have been invited to it and have agreed to participate for some solid money (even place 32 gets $600). Why not show some respect for it?

Shout-Out to the Team Behind the Mid-Elo Cup

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 07:57 PM PST

I've been playing this game since HD came out in 2013, and I've gotten pretty good up to a ladder ranking around 1325, but in the last 8 years, I'd only watched tournaments with all the pros playing. I knew that there were probably smaller tournaments for lower Elos on Voobly, but I never played in them since I was strictly an HD player. When DE came out, I was having fun playing on the ladder, but split my limited game time with games other than AoE2 (heresy, I know.)

Then, I saw an announcement here for sign-ups for the Mid-Elo cup last month. It said that was for players anywhere from 1100 to 1800 and that it had various divisions so that there would be a winner in each Elo bracket. Finally! A chance to play in a tournament where I actually might have a shot at winning! And there's even a small prize pool! I practiced until the date of my first match, had a great time chatting up my first opponent, and......promptly lost the set in 3 games. But it was the most fun I've ever had losing in this game, even when I knew it was over in the third game.

But I still had a shot in the double-elimination tournament! I wasn't able to practice as much, but I reviewed my opponents rec's from his first round, saw that he was a heavy waller. I thought I could exploit that with a good strategy.....and promptly got swept in 2 games.

But I had an absolutely fantastic time, and was extremely impressed by how well the admins handled everything. I would recommend anyone that has never played in a tournament to keep an eye out for the next one and sign up, you won't be disappointed.

Also, on a sidebar, I have way more respect for the pros who are good at drafting, it is really really hard.

    Civ-specific castles!

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 07:23 PM PST

The last 4 new civs to be introduced (Sicilians, Burgundians, Poles, Bohemians) all have their own unique castle designs. How cool would it be if ALL the civs had their own unique castle designs?

Is there a mod or something that re-skins the castles or anything? I would love this as a feature.

Virgo Cup VI: Winter Wars Grand Finals this Saturday

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 09:09 PM PST

Virgo Cup VI: Winter Wars Grand Finals this Saturday

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share this with you all for those who might be interested.

Virgo Cup VI is a 4v4 Tournament played on 13 custom tournament maps, and has been in full swing since September. Over 110 teams signed up to compete! It's organized by a few AOEII enthusiasts from Southern America, and what you might call an 'indie' tournament (no big money from Microsoft backing it or something). For more general information on the tournament, settings and what maps are used, you can follow this link.

The tournament is normally broadcasted in Spanish, but for this sixth iteration of the tournament I came on board to cast the games in English on my Channel, where I go by TheRedPrince. This Saturday (11/13), at 12:00 PM EST, I will cast the Grand Finals, in which the top-2 teams of each category (A, B, and C, based on ELO) face of against one another. In any case, thought I'd just spread the word about the tournament, because the games have been freakin' great and I'd love to give the tournament a bit more exposure in the English-speaking AOE community.

It'll be on Twitch, here's the link.

Letters refer to the three categories the Teams belong to, based on average Team ELO

That's it for the advertisement, I'm off making some more AOEII memes ;).

I love the poles civ design

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 10:30 AM PST

They have the folwark, which boosts their eco but also makes it more vulnerable. This kind of matches their history, as they have good farming land but are often "overrun" by their neighbours. Yet they have resilient (self healing) vilagers.

They have very strong cav but with a clear weakness, and it feels balanced.

Thanks for your good work, devs!

And also, I like the idea of introducing more special unit upgrades to civs

    Cheesiest hideout strat?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 02:21 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm not a big fan of closed maps, but with this map rotation I like to play hideout a bit in an all in fashion. So I was wondering, what are aggressive/cheesy options that don't turn this map into a boom fest?

The ones which comes to my mind are

    - Saracen 22 pop straight archers - make use of wall attack bonus & market abuse

    - Bulgarian 20pop M@A + Towers (though I feel you need to be lucky with your first tower in order to really slow the enemies FC down)

    - Obviously Turk/Spanish/Koreans/Portuguese 24/25+2 Castle Drop are viable but personally I feel castle drops are extremely risky and when denied, you're halfway down to losing the game.

    - Aztec/Teuton 24+2 Smush (or maybe even Khmer 23+0, haven't tried that one though) could also be options.

    - Malay 20 ele in 20mins - but I feel this one hits too late. I'd prolly prefer to go 20+10 instead of 29+0

What are other cheese strategies you like to play / I haven't thought of?

Losing streaks and how to get better as a low ELO player

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 08:46 AM PST

I bought the definitive edition earlier this year and had my first online matches ever. I still remeber the game from when I was a kid and it was brand new. I must say playing online instead of against the AI is so much better but I have now come to my second bigger losing streak (lost 10 out of my last 12) and it is quite discouraging. I do not really understand what my issues are. I am also trying to learn BO with the interactive guide to get better but I would think my biggest issue is getting attacked and not knowing how to properly react to it. There are so many civs and seemingly almost infinitive matchups. Even after 100+games I sometimes wonder how to counter a certain strategy/unit of my opponent. I thought i could get to around 1000 elo by the end of the year but that seems impossible to me now. I have dropped from ~900ish elo back to below 800. I feel like almost no match I have is close its either an easy win for me or getting stomped myself. What shall I do to get better and overcome these tough losses. Thank U fellow players

Also I have had lag issues these last 2 days anyone experiencing the same or is it just my laptop?

Need clown strats for Saracens on arena

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 08:11 PM PST

I've been meaning to experiment with Saracens more, and I'm looking for advice on how to all-in push on arena. I've seen players do this in 3 different ways:

    Feudal tower/archer push

Monk push with market abuse for fast af FC

    Fast imp push with arbs

I can't find the games where I saw these strats, so if anyone knows of any please share links (or build orders).

    TC garrison and boar/deer hotkey

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 08:37 AM PST

I've been practicing boar/deer killing and have some questions on how to do it faster with fewer mistakes. I noticed that when deer pushing, most players garrison some vills and then ungarrison them from TC to kill it. Why not just grab the vills and kill the deer directly, which have a lot fewer actions/hot keys to press? If garrison/ungarrison is better, what are the exact hot key sequence do you press? Is it like, 1) Grab vills, 2) garrison hot key, 3) gathering point hot key 4) left click the deer, 5) ungarrison hot key? In this case since there seem to be five actions, how can you do them so quickly? Or maybe there is a faster way with fewer steps?

Also, when using TC to kill boar, you 1) select vills, 2) press the garrison hot key, 3) left click the TC 4) press the gathering point hot key, and 5) left click and set it at the boar and see click? 6) Right click to shoot at the boar 7) ungarrison hot key. Is this correct? In step 5 do you press right click instead?

Update: A better Earth map for community diplo games

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 11:42 AM PST

    Original thread

First of all thank you everyone for interacting with and providing recommendations on the original thread. It shows that there's significant interest in large scale community games with rpg diplo and real world themes.

There were many great suggestions and I wanted to create a new thread with them to see what people think.

A well-made and ready to use map does exist (link). While lacking major geographical features (and being Mercator) it's a HUGE improvement over the current Earth map.

Then there were many suggestions on how to make a new and improved map.

I did a proof of concept of a sinusoidal projection that can be seen here (It's incomplete because I made it on ludicrous which took a while). This is already a huge size improvement on the original earth map and also preserves the size of countries (no central America is not 2 tiles wide despite what Mercator will have you believe). Here is a size comparison of Japan and Korea on my map (can't fit on my tiny resolution) vs on the default map.

My map without additional exaggeration gives even Sicilians enough space for a tc and can fit a few major rivers and mountain ranges. Note that an actual draft of the map would exaggerate land masses a little.

As may be obvious though, a true to size projection like this presents the problem of the Pacific which is mind numbingly huge irl.

My current idea is to make Pacific islands like Hawaii and Fiji disproportionately large to kind of fill out that space and offer remote places to boom and recover on games.

Another idea is to use a projection that gets rid of the Pacific. u/HenkDeSuperNerd drew up this excellent proof of concept that demonstrates this. Potential downsides to this approach would be that certain regions might have to be committed and players might have a hard time finding/identifying places since things.

Once again inviting discussion. If you have ideas for building a better Earth map or have suggestions/preferences for the current candidates please put them in the comments.

How do I contact the Aoe2.net developer?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 06:34 AM PST

    Hey guys

I'm new the the AoE scene, been playing AoE4 (I come in peace lol).

The reason I'm posting here is because I see https://aoe2.net/ is a fairly well known and used website, with a nice api.

The same dev (or at least I assume it's the same guy) seems to be developing a similar api for AoE4, and I would love to ask him a few questions. Are his contact details available anywhere?

Campaign Concept - Suleiman the Magnificent Pt. 1

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 06:03 PM PST

This campaign is a showcase of the Turks. It falls under the timeline 1521-1566 (Just before Lepanto which is on 1571). This is not going to be the most historically accurate campaign or most innovative (as this is my first time designing campaigns) so I played it safe with mostly build-and-destroy objectives so I can receive feedback.

This campaign is 6 scenarios so I'm doing it bit by bit.

    1) Sultan Ascendant

Suleiman and a small army is in Syria to crush a rebellion (without villagers or economy but with some Fishing Ships without gillnets and Trade Cogs without Caravan to trade with the Governor of Egypt). He has to convince the 4 imams of the 4 Levantine cities of Acre, Damascus, Jerusalem, and Aleppo by peace or by force. You can convince an Imam by either completing few side quests for them, or switch them to enemy/neutral to kill the imam and his army that spontaneously spawns (by scenario triggers). Either way you get a small stream of resources and said cities' military production buildings. You must be quick in convincing the imams as within 30 mins game-time as the Governor of Egypt will betray you by appearing with a large castle age Saracen army in Egypt to the south of the map. You must then defeat his army to win the scenario. You are restricted to the castle age here.

    2) The Last Crusaders

Suleiman his army, few villagers and ships are on Anatolia facing off the massive crusader-held island of Rhodes. It is heavily fortified and contains 6 factions allied to each other; the Spanish, the French, the Italians, the Livonians (Lithuanians/Slavs), the English (Britons), and the Germans (Teutons), of which you have to defeat 3 in order to win. Their military bases will surround a shared economy base on all sides (so you have to land an army to finish off remaining units and economy). There is also a band of European Raiders on your side of the water and will periodically raid you if not dealt with early on. If they are defeated then the factions on Rhodes will attempt to land raiding parties on your base. These factions will have a navy but they will NOT challenge you on water and will act defensively. Lastly there are few sidequests around the map that allow you to assume control of the water.

    3) The Gates to Europe

Suleiman and his army without villagers are at the gates of the town of Sabac. Here, your objective is to defeat the garrison in Sabac and take control of its town and economy. After getting rid of the garrison, you are faced with the massive walled city of Belgrade (Slavs) very close to you and 6 adjoining small villages. You are tasked With raiding these 6 villages and obtaining the Relic Carts in them. But while doing so you must not lose the initial Castle and Town Center obtained from Sabac. Belgrade will constantly raid you so be careful. After raiding the 6 villages, you are then tasked to break into the city of Belgrade and escort the relic carts to the Archbishop's Basilica in the centre of the city. After doing this, you win.

    4) Truly Magnificent Empire

After a brief battle of your army defeating a Hungarian Army, you are tasked with destroying the 12 castles of the Hungarian Army including those within the four enemy Hungarian cities, Mohacs (Bulgarians), Esztergom (Poles/Slavs), Pecs (Cumans) and of course Budapest (Magyars). Destroying the castles within those cities will make each your ally. The other castles are mountain fortresses that you need to destroy to win the scenario.

You and the four cities do possess an economy. The Hungarian Army player, however, does not have an economy and starts with a big pool of resources which is refilled by tributes from the other 4 cities. Of course this tribute stops once you switch the allegiances of each of the cities.

    5) The Eye of the Eagle

Suleiman and his armies have surrounded Vienna (Teutons) on three sides (the fourth side is the massive river Danube), however each of these 3 camps are divided by cliffs and waterways. Each of your 3 camps also have an adjoining ally, the Crimeans (Tatars), Jan Szapolyai (Hungarians), and the Bulgarians. Your objective is to destroy all the gates, towers, and castles along the 6 entrances of the city of Vienna. There is a catch, however. At least 2 of your 3 allies must survive. If 2 allies resign, you immediately lose. Vienna has no economy, instead they rely on Trade Cogs coming from the other side of the Danube carrying ~1000 of each resource. Hence there is a sidequest to destroy these Trade Cogs. Again, the catch is that you can only create War Galleys and less than 15 so as to not attract the ire of the massive Viennese Fleet.

    6) The Legacy of the Magnificent

A Janissary company commander (also the narrator of the scenario) is in the city of Baghdad. Your objective is to maintain the Turkish Wonders in each of the occupied but allied cities of Van, Tabriz, Baghdad, and Basra (all the same faction) against the continuous onslaught of Safavid Persia (Persians) until the timer runs out. You can also win by capturing Shah Tahmasp in his city of Isfahan. You have Death-Match amount of resources but a fixed amount of villagers. You will lose if even one of the wonders fall.
