As the title says, after more than 1k games over 2 years I finally got to 1600 in a mirror match with my favorite civ, kinda poetic

Taking a wonder with no city and villagers to get the win

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 08:46 PM PST

The backstory was that I didn't acknowledge the fact I was on islands and was late to get boats down which led to poor economy in late game and didn't have boat control. He had more wood and recourses so I had to make a play but everything I did couldn't get past his boat patrol and castles. He finally puts a wonder up and since I was Spanish I follow right after thinking with my 20% boost on wonders I could beat him but he ended up anyways. I tried over and over to get to his island but it all seemed hopeless he cannoned out my entire city except for my middle a Town Center and wonder and I decided with only about 20 years left on wonder to sell all my recourses to the market and buy enough to stone to make a castle. Main idea was conquistadors but I realized I had no recourses so I upgraded supremacy (a villager damage buff) with all my vils I made 4 docks and lured his boat army with a few of the villagers down away from my docks. This gave me enough time to make transport ships and go over. I still lost some to his patrolling fire ships But I had finally made it on land with only 10 years left the video shows the insane ending that I could never recreate in a match again. (I don't know where to post the replay file if this ever gets big and someone like t90 wants to do a cast on it, so if someone could comment where to put that, that would be amazing thank you!).

Is the scout-line still a counter to monks?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2021 03:12 AM PST

I saw in a recent update that they removed their extra conversion resistance, but made the minimum conversion time of monks longer, and I never really understood what does that change mean. Every guide used to say that Scouts & Eagle line were the primary counter to monks because of that conversion resistance, but is now gone entirely and thus not a counter anymore, or does that minimum conversion time thing make it functionally the same?

Unique Unit vs Common Unit upgrades: Are their cost justified? Part 1: Infantry and Cavalry

Unique Unit vs Common Unit upgrades: Are their cost justified? Part 1: Infantry and Cavalry

Hi all! Today I want to promote discussion about the units' upgrade cost. I've written on Tables what features of each of the units are changed when you research upgrades, and I'd like to read your opinions about the fairness of their cost. I only included Imperial Age upgrades, since those are the ones that usually limit us from going for them in Castle Age. Latest balance patches have improved in many ways the affordability of UUs, and it's interesting to check what improvements Elite upgrades can bring. It's also good to see how they compare to common unit upgrades, because these are commonly created at more affordable buildings, and having enough production buildings is an issue we find when trying to mass UUs. I'll start with infantry:

    https://preview.redd.it/3snbzfpxa3881.png?width=459&format=png&auto=webp&s=aea8dba0dd96a48f94a32fce677149342ec44eea

Longswordsman to Champion upgrades cost 1050F 450G, and these increase the raw power of the unit, with higher damage against other units (especially Eagles) and buildings, and an increase on HP. These are important to get, when fighting against Eagles or Goths and especially if your civ has bonuses towards them. We see that the rest of infantry UU upgrades cost between 1350 and 1900 resources in terms of food and gold.

Ranged infantry UUs justify their cost precisely on being ranged. Both Axeman and Gbeto become "Archers" who deal melee damage at range but don't get destroyed by Skirmishers. They get an anti-infantry role, and both units are exceptionally good in many cases. Karambit Warriors rely on numbers and pose a threat to many units whose abilities are lowered when outnumbered or have a low rate of fire (Monks, Skirmishers, HCs, Siege,…) and Eagles. Needing one hit more to kill them can make a big difference when you're fighting against 50 of them, and thus I see their upgrade cost as justified. The Kamayuk has been paired with Halberdiers as an anti-Cavalry unit (although we know that these guys can do much more than just countering them). While Halbs' raw stats show clearly that the upgrade is justified by the insane bonus attack, Kamayuks' role as a push unit that can also fight in two lines against melee units and with higher resistance to anti-infantry (due to higher armor, HP and Fabric Shields) and to Skirms (no Spearman armor class) justifies its cost. They also need Fabric Shields to get to their full potential. The Elite Eagle Warrior upgrade is a must due to the attack, speed and armor boost, and I see the cost as clearly justified.

On the right column we have units that could resemble the militia-line, with all their uniqueness. Woad Raiders are one of the best counters to Eagles, since they move nearly at the same speed, and are much tankier. Their 1800 resource upgrade just for 15HP, 3 attack and +1 bonuses against Eagles and Buildings feels too costly though, especially after the UU infantry buff. For example, Huskarl and Serjeant upgrades cost more or less the same, but include major improvements on those units, like invulnerability to Archers and bonus against them for Huskarls, and much better tankiness for Serjeants (also +3 attack), which let them pair their pierce armor with that of Elite Eagle Warriors, while being able to defeat most infantry units cost effectively. For example, Samurai, Shotels and Obuchs get similar improvements (HP and attack) with their Elite upgrades, but with a much lower cost (1400 resources). TKs, Berserks and Jaguars get higher cost upgrades, but all of them include an improvement on their armor, apart from the aforementioned HP and attack.

As for Cavalry (see Tables below), we can see that Camel riders and Mamelukes get major boosts at a modest price, especially when it comes to countering Cavalry, which is their major role. I've got mixed feelings about the Imperial Camel upgrade though. First, Indians are one of the best civs at countering Cavalry civs (KotD4 showed that, especially after American civs were banned), and their Camels, unlike the rest, have building razing capability. They also "save" the need to research Plate Barding Armor (in exchange for one less melee unit). Imperial Camel Riders are tough to kill, due to their FU 160HP and 4 pierce armor, and Halbs get lower bonus attack against them. So I'm not totally sure whether the cost of the upgrade itself is too much or fair. It could see a small decrease, but it'd mean a buff to already one of the best civs on open maps (also for Team Games).

    https://preview.redd.it/l1t5kxe2b3881.png?width=459&format=png&auto=webp&s=324e59515eeccf43f0195998c5298c3a2f4ecbb8

When evaluating "Light Cavalry" upgrades, it always struck me that the Hussar upgrade was so gold intensive for just a minor HP and attack rate improvement. But knowing how Hussars fare when it comes to raiding and as meatshields (especially after Plate Barding Armor), we can regard their cost as justified and use it as a reference for the other 3 upgrades. The Winged Hussar upgrade further improves the Light Cavalry line, so its higher upgrade cost is justified. The same could be said about the Magyar Huszar, although its role is pretty different. As for the Steppe Lancer, it feels that both unit and upgrade costs are exorbitant (how can these guys cost only 10 gold less than a Leitis????). Elephants' costly upgrades include similar boosts to their attack, attack bonuses and tankiness (HP and pierce armor). For 190 and 255 resource units, paying 2100 and 2800 resources respectively could be justified on team games, where the access to extra resources (bigger maps and trade) make them affordable.

As for heavy Cavalry, first we see the modest improvement from Knight to Cavalier, but also at a modest cost. If you want the powerhouse Paladin, you'd need to spend far more resources on them. All upgrades have a high cost (1500-2000 resources), but you will usually end up with a >140HP, >11 attack >1/1 armor unit, with all the advantages of their mobility and their unique features. The highest Heavy Cavalry upgrade cost is for Cataphracts, who, when fully upgraded and thanks to the Byz tree, become arguably the best unit in the game (I mean, it's easy to pair Cataphracts with anything to counter what your enemy is using to counter Cataphracts). Tarkans make a great anti-Archer unit and a group of 15 can destroy an unprotected Castle in half a minute. Boyars get an insane raw power with their upgrade. Konnik upgrade includes two units, and Leitis just deals +3 damage (to a maximum of 22) to any unit, no matter their armor. Keshiks become very tanky (3 base pierce armor) and Coustillers can be fantastic anti-Cavalry snipers. I see the cost of their upgrades well justified.

To sum up, I feel upgrade costs for Infantry and Cavalry are pretty balanced. I could see a decrease on the Woad Raider upgrade cost (especially its gold cost, because Celts will need that gold to create and upgrade Siege) and we could argue for a major change to Steppe Lancers. What are your thoughts? Let me know on your comments! Have a nice day!

Will CaptureAgePro ever have a full release?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 10:30 AM PST

I'm a big fan of capture age and I would gladly pay for it, but subscription fees is something I absolutely hated all my life, and don't get me wrong, I understand they need constant support to keep developing this tool, but I just won't ever add a game to my monthly bills.

Let me pay a set amount for the current version and be done with it, I don't even care if I don't get any patch or update ever again, I just want to be able to rewind.

And again, I get they need support, but I bet there are a lot of people like me who just don't like monthly subscription, I plan on playing aoe at least casually for the rest of my life and the thought of potentially paying thousands for extra features is a big turn off from supporting CA.

For the sake of conversation lets say I would be willing to pay the yearly fee for a full release.

Which of these have the best Paladins? I would have said Lithuanians, but now they lost the final attack upgrade, so which civ has the best Palas now? My top candidate is Franks (most versatile)

Counter to Celts mass scorpions on BF?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 09:52 PM PST

Hey all. I'm a below average player and tend to stick to "noob only" BF games in the unranked lobby. I've been coming up against people who pick Celts and then mass scorpions lately, and that strategy usually wipes the floor with whatever I've got at that point. What is a good counter? Someone here recommended that you can put up some siege workshops somewhere to be able to whip out onagers in the case of a mass scorpion attack. But that post was 9 years old. Is that still a valid strategy? Any advice would be really helpful. Thanks!

    Grid Hotkey help

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 06:55 PM PST

    Hi,

I recently got the steam build/version after playing on the microsoft store/gamepass version and i've run into the issue that the steam version isn't using grid in the definitive or default hotkey preselections. Microsoft store version does and i personally find it easier(I'm also teach my daughter and it's easier for her to visualize in grid form) Is there any way to get that in there? Is there something i'm missing? Her computer which only has the the steam version doesn't have the grid either so i don't think it's an issue with dual installations.

    Thanks for any help!

Age of empires 2 HD 2013 steam version reboots my PC every 20-30 minutes

    Posted: 27 Dec 2021 12:04 AM PST

I'm desperate at this point. I've spent 6 hours scouring the internet, trying to find answers, but I just can't find any that solve the issue. I've ran every malware software out there, tried playing the game in windows 8 compatibility mode (which helps it run longer), used CCleaner, downed the graphics settings, everything. I'm all out of options, and this is apparently a common problem on the internet with this game, and all versions of Age of Empires 2. I need help. Specs below. This game use to be my favorite as a child, and I wanna play with my uncle and brothers like we did decades ago. My computer has zero issues running super high end games, it's only Age. And after the reboots, my computer makes popping sounds after. Sometimes after reboots I get an error saying I lost files on age, and have to redownload it. I just don't get it. Please help a brotha out.

Specs: RTX 2070, CPU is i7, laptop is Alienware m17 R2.

This is strictly an age of empires issue, this doesn't happen with anything else, and I'm not the only one, none of my other apps or games do this. Please help.

The Alt-F4 situation right now/Delay Queues

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 02:18 PM PST

For me, I was quite excited when I started reading the Forum talking about Alt-F4 players issue. It says there is now a delay when you Alt-F4/Close the game during Queue or in the Match Lobby. I really thought this was a good idea at first.

Until I realize that people are still Alt-F4ing most of the time, and for some reason after the queue continues you cannot cancel it sometimes. This happened to me and I had to force quit the game because I cannot leave the queue and ban a different map. When I restarted the game, I got a 20 mins time out when I wasn't even Alt-F4ing and it was a stupid glitch with the queue! I really wonder is there a better way to fix this issue. As of writing this, I'm in a 1 hour time out because someone Alt-F4ed on my team and I cannot leave the queue afterwards, had to force quit again. :/

Just want to hear your experiences on this whole "solve" and whether you have better suggestions

Probably most people think the queue right now is perfect, but for me sometimes not so much.

Is there a graphic difference between aoe2 and aoe2 HD?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 05:15 PM PST

That's I wondered for long time. Except water, fire, farms... I mean for buildings and units. Is there actually a improvement of graphics in HD?

    Surrendering for nothing

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 11:33 AM PST

Why the players surrender even if they are far from losing?

I was playing unranked and then a player started to insult another member of my team and then the player who was insulting left the game even if my team and i where far from losing (sorry for my bad english).

Context : unranked 4v4, one of my teammate insult another teammate of "autist playing like a retard" then surrender even if we werent losing, this was my first game on aoe II DE lol
