What do you think about removing the bombard tower technology (800 400) entirely and leaving only chemistry as a prerequisite for BT?

Bombard towers are too rarely seen.

Finally played again after 20 years

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 09:49 PM PST

Just bought the game after 20 years to enjoy some of my childhood nostalgia, after a couple of games vs AI I wanted to try online to play against a real player, I was so excited until I was rushed in every game I played. It's so frustrating, are these the pro strategies? I enjoyed playing long games, building big armies and fighting late in the game, instead I found myself being rushed every single time with a few infantry to defend from an army of 20+ archers. Yes I'm a noob but I thought I would be matched someone my level who doesn't like to overengineer the game, instead I never passed feudal age in any match. How do I drop my ranking? I've played over 20 matches now and it's pretty much the same in every single one.

P.S. Before the "git gud" comments start raining, I want to say I really enjoy the game, I have so many fond memories of it but I don't have the time to become a micro managing machine like some pro players nor do I want to, I just want to play someone my level who enjoys a long game developing a nice empire, it's on the title of the game after all.

Edit: Thanks all for the advices, seems I've got a lot to learn, will try my best but I guess I might stick to playing vs AI or in noob lobbies, played in ranked cause it takes so long to find a match on casual. My Elo is 850 or smth like that atm.

For the curious: "Pétard comes from the Middle French péter, to fart, from the root pet, expulsion of intestinal gas, derived from the Latin peditus, past participle of pedere, to break wind."

    FC into gg

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 01:08 AM PST

Not sure why so many players are into FC into booming into gg and ask their teammate to resist the 1v2? It is basically a recipe for gg. I even had many games where my teammate with a much lower elo than anybody else in the game went for a strong aggression in Fuedal (of course a lot of vill idle time as the price ) and we still easily won. I'd say more than 80% of the losing games in 2v2 games are due to one person doing FC.

What should be the ideal Goths army composition?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 05:25 AM PST

So I started using Goths for fun, I initially didn't use them considering they don't have stone walls. But later I enjoyed their aggressive attack stance, especially how I can produce a batch of 60 Huskarls in literally 30 secs or lesser and how they steamroll castles, walls and Town Centres single-handedly. I enjoyed playing with Huskarls a real lot for a lot of obvious reasons, despite being a cavalry player.

But I'm unsure what sort of army I should take when playing with Goths, cause Huskarls literally take down castles, archers, infantry, most cavalry on their own, so idk if I should even take Cavaliers, Halberdiers or even Siege with me cause we mostly use Trebs to take down castles, but why take trebs if I already got Huskarls?

Idk if 120 Huskarls is a good idea XD cause of their overwhelming numbers, but usually the trouble I get is from enemy siege like onagers that keep smashing them down or few rare exception troops like Elephants, Cataphracts etc... So at this point idk what's a more ideal army composition when I play with Goths... So does anyone who has a lot of experience with them, know what sort of army is the best?

    the ole no music problem

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 08:09 AM PST

I've got a 10 year old windows 7 pc with windows xp also which is the system I want to use to play AOE. I play it on a pc-cd.

I'm told that without an old fashioned disc drive you can't get the music to play from the disc but there are fixes.

They don't look very good though. One of them said that you have to press buttons on the keyboard to reset the music everytime it ends and that you cannot moderate the volume and it defaults to overly loud.

I want the authentic 1999 AOE experience, not 2012 or 2019 versions and I want the music to loop as it should and to be adjustable in the options menu as it should. I'm not resorting to playing a sound file on the desktop while I'm playing the game.

Is there a fix that can give me exactly what I want?

AoE II Cheat sheet for beginners

AoE II Cheat sheet for beginners

    Cheat sheet with hotkeys

    Hi everyone

I have spent some time doing a cheat sheet of the most essential steps to think of in a typical AoE game for my girlfriend who is completely new to Age, to RTS and to some extent to computers. The idea being to have a printed version nearby or a digital on a second screen that she can check from time to time to see whether she forgot something important. I thought it might be of some use for newer players (I assume under 800 elo). I have included the hotkeys that I set up for her, but here is the link if you want to exchange them with your own. Please keep in mind that it is not exhaustive and based on my personal opinion of what I think are essential steps for beginners. I am a fairly experienced player, but far from an expert.

    How the cheat sheet works:

Blue keys indicate "go-to" hotkeys, green are game actions, black are buildings (I use B to build both types of buildings), and red are units.

    Dark Age

The dark age segment describes a basic general build order, with two houses at the start, 6 villagers on sheep then 4 making one lumber camp. I would suggest doing loom afterwards as it will simplify boar lures massively for newer players and doesn't make that much of a difference vs doing it before clicking up. Also protects the player versus wolves, scout lames and who knows, an eventual drush. Add 4 villagers to berries and the rest to food under the TC until you can click up. During the transition, build a second lumber camp to have 5+5 villagers on wood.

Essential hotkeys include the "go-to TC" hotkey, villager hotkey, garrison (instead of town bell) & return to work, as well as Idle villager. I am aware that this might seem like much, but it will simplify your playing by a lot once you get used to it.

I would suggest building a barracks while going up to feudal.

    Feudal Age

In feudal, I give the 4 essential units as I wouldn't recommend drushes or men-at-arms at lower elos as they require too much multi-tasking. Be offensive with archers or with scouts depending on your civ or be defensive with spearmen against scouts and with skirms against archers. Keep in mind that if you do archers or skirmishers, you will need a blacksmith to do fletching.

From the eco perspective, prioritize doing double bit-axe and if you can horse collar. The eco balance as suggested should help you transition to castle age effectively. Keep 10 lumberjacks on two lumber camps and add farms until you reach 12-16 (also with berries). Start adding gold miners. If you want to play archers, try and add gold miners first (before farmers) or even while transitioning to feudal. As for wheelbarrow, it is fine to do it at any point during feudal, or shortly after reaching castle age.

    Castle Age

In castle age, bow saw is the priority economy wise, and if you haven't done it yet, gold mining is also worth it at some point. I suggest building a siege workshop to use rams against buildings and mangonels against archery range units. If you play with archery range units yourself, think about adding a university to research ballistics later. In castle age, blacksmith upgrades play a big role: for hand-to-hand units such as barracks and stables units, prioritize their defense upgrades and for range units, prioritize attack upgrades. Also do not forget about bloodlines for any mounted unit (includes cav archers, camels, and elephants). If you have the situation under control and an army composition that works to defend yourself, you can add two extra town centers and use the "select all town-centers" to boom and develop your economy. Remember to define gathering points for each new TC so that your new villagers start working right away.

    Imperial Age

In imperial age, use castles to produce trebuchets which are the easiest way to attack ennemy castles. Conscription is the most useful military technology you can research in the castle. Economy-wise, you should aim at reaching 130 villagers and 200 population as soon as possible, with around 30 to 50 farmers depending on your army composition. Not producing enough villagers is the most basic mistake that less experienced players do on a regular basis.

I have included a small table of the most common counters. I am aware that there are a lot more possible counters to those units, but I have limited myself to the most available, simple, and efficient ones.

I welcome any feedback or criticizing, and I hope that some of you might find it useful.

    Cheers,

    goose

Arena - You Know you want to.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 02:45 AM PST

    My favourite map.

I hear alot of people say they dislike it because they hate how slow it can be, or that they don't like how they can't scout their opponents buildings. Some people seem to get really frustrated by monks. A lot of it though boils down to it being different to Arabia. It plays different, it has a different meta and different strats work that would never work on Arabia.

I hated Arena when I first starting playing it, I lost all the time against players around my Elo and I had no idea why. I started reading old reddit posts and scouring YouTube for Arena guides/vids to help me. Now I bloody love it!

Anyway I wanted to share some great Arena guides/channels made by players much better than me that helped improve my Arena game.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Firstly we'll start with the Meta. Scouts into Boom, fight for the relics early castle age into 3TCs. Depending on the civ it can be anywhere for 25+2 to 27+2.

    https://youtu.be/kNhmSOix06A

D3rp doesn't have much on his YouTube channel but he's on Twitch alot and regularly watches viewers games and gives notes/tips.

    ------------------------------------------------

Games don't have to start in castle age!

St4rk does a great guide on Vinchester's infamous 'Obosement Rush'. Feudal Towers + Archers.

    https://youtu.be/GC21JQZulk8

Dracken regularly does a 'Trush into Fast Imp' build that can really put the pressure on your opponent early. Also Dracken is on Twitch most nights of the week and always talks through what he's thinking/doing. Has been very helpful to me in improving my Arena game.

    https://youtu.be/M1r42477leE

    --------------------------------------

Now the strats that Arena is known best for:

    SMUSH (Siege Monk Rush)

Dracken again does a good tutorial that will whet your appetite:

    https://youtu.be/bF-QLJqhE0c

'Aoe2 Arena' channel isn't updated anymore but has alot of great content.

Fast Imp Monk Treb - One of the most satisfying strats in the game.

    https://youtu.be/ab-SdsQ1tY0

Monk Micro is key to succeeding with Smushs and Fast Imps. Monk Micro is definitely one of my strengths in Aoe2 and this tutorial is where I learnt the skill.

    https://youtu.be/FBUAwwdDmdw

    ----------------------------------

One of the best part about Arena is the variety. Unique Units are alot more common than when playing Arabia.

    https://youtu.be/1vi-_3U8KDM

Turk Jannie/Mango perhaps the strongest castle age strat on Arena.

Gyeseongyeon has a build for a forward castle push.

    https://youtu.be/cdq_mIBEeJM

Or you can go the safer Castle at home build. This is a really good vid.

    https://youtu.be/Xa8vwKWdRRg

    ---------------

JonSlow - Has a heap on Arena for Beginners tutorials going through the different civs and how to play them. One day he might finish the last few civs he's missed..... Also he's on Twitch most nights and most of the Clown community will be in his chat.

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7nUxQp-MGvvT-_wP1DqHsryTX3fzWXLz

    ----------------------

Lastly. A shout out to kc-Ereon. A channel full of Arena casts. Usually sped up a bit so you can watch a full game in less than 15-20mins.

    Clowns channels on Twitch.

How to beat harder difficulties AI in drawn out team games?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 05:11 PM PST

I recognize most people like to say "kill them early".

But that's not fun. My friends and I like to 3v3 or 4v4 vs AI on islands or black forest, and we enjoy long, "relaxed" games so we can play and catch up with our lives since we live apart.

We crush normal difficulty. But hard difficulty is too hard. I know it's way easier if you go in early, but it's not as fun as when we build up stupid big armies and have epic battles. In normal difficulty enough walls and castles does it.

Sometimes we win but it's a bit too rare for our liking. How would you suggest we "stay alive long enough to get our armies big" in harder difficulties?

I'm all for cheesy OP civ/unit comp ideas, We just don't like rushing with knights 20 minutes in and the game being over :(

Why so few meso civs in WWC?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 11:28 AM PST

    Hey all,

Watching T90's wandering warrior cup and I've seen a little Mayans here and there but not often, I don't think I've seen the other meso civs.

Any ideas why? Are they bad in water?

Team bonus that allows other civs to train your UU?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2022 12:03 AM PST

Imagine having a mercenary-like unique tech, or a team bonus, that will allow other players to train main unique unit from the castle (unlike the secondary UU like condottieri, imperial skirms or genitour from the range or barracks). Same cost as the civilization "hosting" the bonus, and no limits, unlike the Cuman Mercenaries. Would you want this tech?
