William Wallace campaign, but you write AI to complete it!

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 04:19 AM PDT

Had this idea for the longest time, finally got around to making it.

When you install public mods, the files are downloaded locally and can be modified, this includes the AI. I changed the triggers to activate on the AI player and now you can complete the campaign just by modifying the AI.

The AI files are located by going to the Mod menu > Open directory > 53299_AI Scripting Campaign\resources_common\ai

Link to mod (or search for AI Scripting Campaign)

    https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/53299/

Each scenario reads from an AI file with a stub of the solution, to win it's only a matter of copy pasting/modifying a few lines.

The Battle of Falkirk you team up with your custom AI, you get a villager to build an economy alongside the AI but are unable to make military.

    Author notes:

I suck at writing AI and making campaigns, this was really a proof of concept to see if this was a workable format to make an AI scripting tutorial. Being able to tailor a specific scenario and then see the effects of changing a parameter immediately just works well for me.

If someone better at making campaigns and writing AI is up to it, I'd gladly play through a similar style campaign covering more advanced topics.

Mangonels make this game so much fun :-)

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 12:53 AM PST

I freaking love mangonels, they are in my opinion one of the reasons this game is so interesting and never gets old.

They counter archer, but there is counterplay with microing. Add in your own crossbows that you need to micro in archer vs archer civ fights, and you have the most intense situations in the game :-)

They die to cav, but having counterunits like monks or pikes gives you the ability to counter this again. Then there is the interaction with bombard cannons in lategame...

And... It just feels awesome attack grounding, predicting where the enemy is going! Against archers, but also in mangonels wars

You can add villagers to the mix to keep them alive. Also, they make outposts really useful offensively.

Water kind of lacks such an option, would be awesome if they could introduce such a mechanic there

That feel when you do this in a tournament game

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 07:49 AM PST

Honestly I love how devastated the AI is when their vils can't reach their beloved berries

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 07:24 PM PST

What's your honest opinion on laming?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 11:28 PM PST

    I feel conflicted...

Yesterday I won a game within 5 minutes because my scout just happened to run into my opponents TC at the exact moment they were bringing in their boar. I killed three of of their sheep and stole one. They resigned instantly and complained about the laming. I told them I understood why they were upset but it's the game and they just got unlucky.

In my view, that's all that happened: I took a risk by scouting less and going to my opponent early and I got lucky with it. Personally I feel like anything that is possible within the game (except for being an ass in chat) is fair game. Laming, walling off your opponent, castle drops... You name it. If you can pull risky shit off, you deserve the reward.

Is my opinion common? How do you feel about laming and other annoying strats?

What unique unit design will we see in future?

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 06:03 AM PDT

When we look at the long list of uu one might see a structure. We have many unique units that have another version on horses or on foot.

What we have: Teutonic knight - Bojar (high melee armor) Jannisary - Conquistadore (castle age gun powder) Kamajuk - Steppe lancer (ranged melee attack) Chu Ko Nu - Kipchak (many many missiles) Swordsman - Tarkan (bonus against buildings)

Rattan Archer, Jaguar Warrior, Camel (anti archer archer, anti infantry infantry, anti cav cav)

What we can expect: Konnik -> cav archer that survives Berserker -> mounted berserker (melee cav unit that heals itself) Genitour -> mounted halberdier (but that would be Camel?)

Imperial Skirmisher - Imperial Camel -> Imperial Halberdier?

    Other ideas?

If you could make one change to troll players of a civ, what would it be?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 10:02 AM PST

We often have (relatively) reasonable balance discussions about changing this or that civ for the better, but assuming you wanted to change something in a civ just to send its players frothing at the mouth, what would it be?

Bonus points for changes that are actually trollish in character instead of brute force like "Remove X civ" or "Remove Knights from Franks".

IDK about this myself, so decided to put this to Reddit

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 09:14 PM PST

Lately, I've seen many posts talking about AoE2 being dead. This in my opinion is completely wrong, but would still like to hear others' opinions on this. I really enjoy the game myself,-FYI I do mostly quickplay and some ranked games. Thoughts?

Why is this game so hard at 850 elo?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 05:50 PM PST

I've lost four in a row now. Just feel completely devastated and worthless, and uninstalled the game.

I usually get extremely angry but this time I just felt deflated and completely emotionless

    Favourite Civ Matchups?

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 04:01 AM PDT

In some of my recent games I found myself on the right side of what felt like a quite one sided matchup!

Some examples include: Japanese vs Goths (On 4 lakes too!) Incas vs Goths Malians vs Persians Teutons vs Malians (not really one sided for first 3 ages but in post Imp Teutons feel amazing while Malians drop off)

What are some of your favourite matchups to draw?

I'm not so much looking for thoughts on the overall balance or which is the best civ overall, but which matchups do you find where you go "yeah I'm feeling really good about this"?

Suggestion: See opponent civ during 60 second countdown.

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 03:41 AM PDT

I know people would complain about drop outs on unfavourable civ matchups, but just so hard to remember civ bonuses and tech trees of 39 civs.

Edit: forgot your civ isn't locked in during the countdown. This would only work if civs were locked.

ROTC and MoS2 - where can I catch a stream?

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 01:18 AM PST

Was hoping T90 was casting some this week, I saw some earlier in the week but nothing this weekend.

Any idea where the next few games will be streamed? I thought memb was streaming it but it's been world rumble all weekend it seems.

Dave has also not been online the last week or so. Maybe there haven't been that many games in these tournaments?

I want to create a Civ with power spikes early and late (post-imp) game, but falls short in Late Castle and early Imp

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 12:22 AM PST

Just a follow up from previous post

Civ Bonuses: [#1: Villager attacks with range instead of melee (has 2 min range)] [#2: XbowMan, m@a, light cav upgrades free (not the whole line)] [#3: knights +10hp, +1p armor] [#4: fire ships move 15% faster] [#5: knights, fire ships created 15% faster]

Team Bonus: (mills, camps provide +5 pop)

UU: musketeer, elite musketeer (a hand cannoneer)(125F, 80G) (HP: 25, 30) (atk: 35, 40) (armor: 0/0, 0/1) (range: 11, 12) (minimum range: 5, 4) (reload Time: 10, 9.5, for reference, HC has 3.45) (movement speed: 0.9, HC has 0.96) (accuracy: 90, 100) (atk bonus: +20 vs cav, +30 vs monks) (affected by ballistics) (meant to be an anti monk unit, not for spamming)

Castle UT: Horse Pact (700F, 350G) knight-line gold cost converted to food

Imperial UT: Propaganda Tactics (1050W, 550G) all units attack 10% faster, upgrades trebs into heavy trebs

UU #2: Heavy Trebs (trebs buffed with 2/3 of kataparuto and 2/3 of warwolf, higher attack and +3 melee armor)

    Civ lacks the ff techs:

Archery range: (arbalest) (heavy cav arch) (parthian Tactics)

    Barracks: (entire Eagle line) (supplies)

    Stable: (bloodlines) (entire Camel/elephant/lancers) (paladin)

    Dock: (elite Cannon Galleon)

    Monastery: everything is available

    Castle: hoardings

Siege workshop: (siege Ram) (heavy scorp) (bombard Cannon)

    Blacksmith: everything is available

University: (masonry) (architecture) (fortified Wall) (keep) (heated Shot) (arrowslits)

Eco: (stone Shaft Mining) (guilds) (crop rotation)

    Would this be good enough?

Edit: (I gave vils min range, and removed the +1 atk) (changed cost of musketeer to 125F, 80G, HP to 25, 30, armor to 0/0, 0/1, range to 11/12, and movement speed from 1 to 0.9) (removed ballistics affecting trebs)

800 elo how to counter goths in late game?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 05:44 AM PST

I know, don't let it get that far. But it did.

4 lakes, I'm Japanese (first time using them). Have checked the timeline and my vill high was 122 and his was 68. I had 3 relics to his 2.

But he got to imp and we were having a sweet treb war until eventually his Huskarl / Hand Camnon combo was overwhelming.

I controlled most golds but somehow they kept coming.

I had champions but just couldn't make any ground until eventually he was in my base and it was gg. Any advice on army comp or how to tackle this combo?

why do Portuguese have such a low win rate?

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 05:38 AM PST

Like on paper they seem quite good, balanced archery range and decent Cavaliers with bloodlines, you get Halbs, you even get awesome Organ Guns. Besides all their stuff is 20% cheaper on Gold and techs are researched 30% faster, but idk how they're having such a poor win rate...

Alright Friends, how do we beat the m@a archer meta

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 01:22 PM PST

    Do we just play copycat?

What is THE most effective anti-m@a archer build?

So many times I'm playing and judging by score and civ I know exactly what's coming. I don't even need to scout.

Knowing what's coming -- I am still frequently beat by it because of the 6+ nerfs to defensive building since DE came out. 3 m@a can chew through hundreds of wood or hundreds of food in scouts in a minute. Kills a vill? Instant edge.

Just desperately don't want to give in and copy it.

What is the best way to counter the obvious ultra-aggression.

    Straight skirms? Double range skirms?
