Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 14 Week 6: Burgundians vs Sicilians

    Posted: 22 Mar 2022 11:00 PM PDT

And RNGesus gave us the battle of the Lords of the Button civs!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Italians vs Khmer, and next up is the Burgundians vs Sicilians!

    Burgundians: Cavalryand Economy civilization

    • Economic upgrades available one Age earlier; cost -50% food
    • Stable techs cost -50%; Cavalier available in Castle Age
    • Gunpowder units gain +25% damage
    • TEAM BONUS: Relics generate food in addition to gold
    • Unique Unit: Coustillier (Medium cavalry with massive charge attack on cooldown)
    • Unique Unit: Flemish Militia (Powerful infantry with moderate anti-cavalry attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Burgundian Vineyards (Farmers generate an additional tiny trickle of gold)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Flemish Revolution (It's "The Button")

    Sicilians: Infantry and Cavalry civilization

    • Start with +100 stone
    • Castles and Town Centers built +100% faster
    • Land military units (except siege weapons) receive -50% bonus damage
    • Farm upgrades provide twice as much extra food
    • Donjon replaces Towers
    • TEAM BONUS: Transport Ships cost -50%; gain +5 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Serjeant (Sturdy infantry that can build Donjons)
    • Unique Building: Donjon (Powerful, expensive tower that can train Serjeants)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: First Crusade (Each TC spawns 7 Serjeants - max. 5 TCs; units more resistant to conversion)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Hauberk (Knights gain +1/+2 armor)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Oh boy, it's a good thing neither of these civs are controversial! For 1v1 Arabia and other open maps, both Burgundians and Sicilians can have their moments to shine - although neither quite make it into the top tier. Burgundians simply have a fantastic economy, and their mid-Castle through mid-Imperial Age can be difficult to stop. However, they lack early aggressive potential or decent ranged options. Meanwhile, Sicilians have one of the best military bonuses in the game with their bonus damage resistance, and their tech tree is fairly broad. Still, their economy is fairly generic until Castle Age. Which civ here do you prefer on your basic open map?
    • On closed maps, both of these civs really shine. Burgundians can safely boom to their heart's content, and they still get their deadly timings in early Imperial Age. However, they still lack good archers and can fall off in post-Imp. Sicilians, on the other hand, possess a decent enough economy and strong military options throughout the game, but notably lack any sort of gunpowder options. Which civ do you prefer on your Arenas, Hideouts, and RFs?
    • In team games, again again both civs are strong options for the pocket position. Burgundians still get their top-tier eco and are otherwise well set up for cavalry spam. Their gunpowder can help them out in late game, but the civ will nevertheless hit a ceiling due to lacking Bloodlines. Sicilians may lack the sheer economic power of the Burgundians, but their Hauberk Cavalier can be a nightmare for archer civs in early Imperial Age. They don't get Paladins, but they do get strong infantry and siege. Which do you think is the stronger pocket pick?

Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Cumans vs Mongols. Hope to see you there! :)

How often do you stumble over aoe2 acronyms outside of aoe2? And what are acronyms that confuse you the most? For me everytime sb. writes so instead of significant other I wonder what Siege Onager have to do with that. 11

    A Scenario Editor Trick

    A Scenario Editor Trick

The Frank player made Organ Guns and Genoese XBowmen in the Grand Dukes campaign, and the blue enemy in Algirdas 1 made Leiciai and Trebs in their Wonder. I decided to play around with the editor and discovered this cute trick.

Yes, I made the Aztecs make other unique Infantry (Throwing Axemen, Huskarl, Teutonic Knight, Kamayuk, etc) from a Wonder!

    How to do it?

    - Add a trigger effect: Enable/Disable Object, and select the unit. You will see a item ID in the lower right. Example: Teutonic Knight has item ID 25.

    - Add another effect: Change Train Location, and select Teutonic Knight from the Object List in the left, and Wonder in the Object List in the right. Set the button location to 1.

    - If you have AI knowledge, then add the following code.

    (defrule (unit-type-count-total 25 < 20) ;Teutonic knight (can-train 25)=> (train 25))

It will train Teutonic Knights until they reach 20 of them. Note that my-unique-unit-line will not work, as it, for the Aztecs' case, is Jaguar Warrior. You can only let the AI train "foreign" units with item ID and the steps above.

NOTE: it does not work so far for the elite version yet!

Are these \"gods\", or foreigners from the sea?

The penalty for quitting a game is implemented stupidly

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 05:54 PM PDT

After 2 years of DE having zero penalty for anyone quitting at any time, we finally have it in and it takes things way too far.

If all 3 of your allies quit in the first minute of the game, you still have to stay in the game or you will be penalised for "leaving the game early". WHY!?!?

I'm shocked by how stupid this design is, especially for unranked games. In Dota 2 for example, when 1 player quits the game, the game becomes safe to leave for all remaining players.

Has anyone seen this Smurf behavior before?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 12:03 PM PDT

    Hey all,

Had an interesting Smurf experience the other day playing TGs 4v4. All the games were on Arena.

There's a player, he played on my team in 1 game and against me in 2 more. Essentially he would play pocket on Arena as Lithuanians or another Paladin civ. He would boom, create an insane army to support me, patrol his army to the enemy, build forward castles and production. Queue up all his stables and then just GG.

He had it down to a fine art. He created enough production to kill off the other team and timed it well so that his paladins would continue to stream out of stables, even after he had GG'd it seemed.

After he gg'd, he would immediately queue up again.

Has anyone seen this before? What's the point of this - is it a test for him/her? Does he/she lose ELO for this?

How would you play against Byzantines or Franks as the Aztecs?

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 09:58 PM PDT

Look Aztecs are great, but towards lategame, having Pikemen is gonna be horrible to face Frank Paladins or Byzantine Cataphracts you'll get steamrolled xD

So what's the best way to survive that matchup? And is it possible to even win Late game fights with them?

    A shocking fact about Longbowmen

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 07:21 AM PDT

Recently I've been bored of try-harding. The game has gotten stale always playing meta unit compositions, so to have some fun I've been going random civ and playing with units I never play with...especially unique units. I've positively tanked my elo doing this, but at least it's made the game interesting again.

I always ignored Britons, never having much interest playing as them, but recently I got them repeatedly and played my version of FC (SC) into Longbowmen and...Wow.. Very underwhelming. Later on I went to have a look at their stats and to my great surprise I found out that only Elite Longbowmen get the extra range, which combined with the Castle Age UT Yeoman gives a truly insane 12 range, so in hindsight it makes sense as otherwise Longbowen would be quite op. And I thought I knew a lot about this game..Ha.

I'm curious..is this common knowledge? And I'd also like to hear from you all what you think about Longbowmen. Do you ever go Castle Age Longbowmen? If so, in what situations would you do so? They only get an extra one attack over a crossbowman. How would spending the villager time mining stone for a castle ever be worthwhile over simply going crossbowmen out of archery ranges?
