    Nine, ten or twelve players?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 11:33 PM PDT

Currently, aoe2 allows up to eight players. The main reason for this limitation was that computers weren't powerful enough to handle more players and lag in multiplayer. However, since aoe2de, the lag has been dramatically reduced relative to before and modern computers have little trouble with 7 ai players. I would find it really cool if the number of players was increased. This would allow new types of team games (e.g. 3v3v3) and could expand the options for scenarios. Note that aom already has up to 12 players. What do you think?

Is this the subreddit we can use to look for friends?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 01:46 AM PDT

Basically what the title says. Looking for friends to usually play 2v2,3v3,4v4 with, but don't know where to look for them. I'm on 850 elo and got a couple hundred hours experience in-game https://steamcommunity.com/id/7zilly/

How to play siege units effectively?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 03:40 AM PDT

Playing the game for a while now, 1050 elo, about 100 ranked 1v1s played with 51% wr, max 1100. During these I've used siege very little. Reason: I like to practice against ai, and the bad habit picked up from that is not using siege because ai's godlike micro of individual unit means mangonels are pretty useless. I'm at a point where learning to apply siege will drastically help gaining leads against mostly xbow+pikes play which I'm atm very vulnerable to.

So my question is, how have you learnt to play siege? I know about unit counters, looking for just some tips & tricks, quirks etc. Thank you.

    Tips for a new player?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 03:37 AM PDT

Still super new to this game so I kinda struggle to understand how to play effectively in skirmish games and even in campaigns. I did try the tutorial but that only helped me so far. I so used to other RTS games like Supcom and C&C. I can beat AI on the easiest setting finally, but takes me close to an hour or more to be officially ready to launch the assault. Any tips from veterans of the game on how you play and are good at the game?

HD vs DE for Campaign-Only Player

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 10:47 PM PDT

I figure this has been asked a hundred times, so sorry in advance, though I did try to look for my question at least. Was wondering if it's worth buying DE if I only want the game for campaigns - does DE have all the same campaigns as HD, is it missing some, or does it have new ones?

    Voting for ranked map rotation

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 01:27 AM PDT

    Hi!

Seeing as there's a new ranked map rotation coming up, I went looking for where I could place my vote for community map picks. Can't seem to find out where I can submit any votes on the official aoe2 website. Am I looking in the wrong place? :)

    Fast start option for RM

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 05:58 AM PDT

On Dauts Stream, I recently saw a start with 9 vils in a tournament. I never got into empire war because I dont like to skip dark age totally, but I do like the idea to have faster games.

How about giving players the option in RM to sign up for "quick start": If both players tick this option, players will start with fast start settings. This could be a 9 vil start with a sheep in the middle of the TC or similar.

    Technical issue or smurfing?

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 12:35 AM PDT

I saw a game where one player immediately after the start destroyed all his villagers and TC and lost. So I checked the profile (https://aoe2.net/#profile-525795) and he does it very very often (see for example his game against Taddy_Mason). Can it be just a technical issue? Since his Elo is now 400 below his highest Elo I'd guess it's a way to smurf but I'm not sure.

    What is a Ghulam?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 04:19 PM PDT

Just trying to get some historical/linguistic context for the new hindustani unique unit (ghulam). The unit description says it's a spearman with area effect strong vs archers and weak vs cavalry, and the icon makes it look like just a basic armoured spearman unit.

In my native language (Persian), ghulam literally just means "peasant" or "peasant-soldier" in a military setting. They weren't really particularly strong, mostly just poorly equipped infantry raised from the peasant class. I know many Indian languages have a lot of Persian linguistic influence (Urdu, Punjabi, and Hindi afaik), so I wonder if ghulam means the same thing. If so, it'd be a little disappointing to have the Hindustani unique unit just be a peasant.

    Toggle melee/ranged

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 03:41 AM PDT

Now that we are getting a new unit that has the switch between melee and ranged what other units do you think can have this implemented?

My first idea was Jannisaries since they were extremely well trained in hand to hand combat as well as ranged. They were offen used in melee once they enemy is trapped with crescent tactics. Low armor still makes them weak in terms of tankiness yet they should still be able to dish out some potent melee dmg. Scenarios in which you would choose to switch to melee seems limited yet it may cover up the weakness against skirms for example.

    Flamethrower Elephant???

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 05:20 AM PDT

    So, I've been thinking...

Elephant trunks are quite versatile. Elephants use them for a number of different activities, such as eating, drinking, socializing, water cannon, obviously sniffing etc.

To that end, I think it would be pretty cool if we had an Elephant unit which spews napalm from the trunk, incinerating hordes of enemies, like a land fire ship.

It would have 3 attack, 2 range, 250 hp, and would cost 140f and 75g. For historical accuracy, it would be given to a civ like the Saracens so they can have an answer to Greek Fire when attacking Constantinople.

I think this idea is cool but I'm looking for feedback. Thoughts?

Feature request: flat terrain toggle to avoid holes in the wall

    Posted: 18 Apr 2022 02:35 AM PDT

This feature would remove all elevations from the map while active, but only visually.

This way it will be very easy to properly wall and avoid holes that are sometimes very difficult to see.

I think technically it should be feasible, it's basically a "flatten terrain" brush for the whole map, which shouldn't take up too much resources.

    What do you think?

Something to consider: possible balance changes for pre-existing civs alongside and after the new DLC

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 05:24 AM PDT

The last time we got a balance update was with Update 56005 in November 2021, three months after Dawn of the Dukes released. That will make it around six months between then and the release of the Dynasties of India DLC at the end of the month.

That patch was actually fairly comprehensive in changes, though its scope mostly covered buffing up Castle Age infantry UUs in light of the Long Swordsman buffs done in previous patches. Given that the game will receive a free update alongside the DLC's release, there are definitely some changes to expect.

We know for a fact that the legacy Indians civ will be replaced by the Hindustanis civ in said update, which applies to whether you have the DLC or not. It's also possible that the existing Prithviraj campaign will be reworked into a Gurjaras campaign that will be available whether or not you have the DLC.

Some possible, yet completely unconfirmed changes, may include:

    • Addition of Elephant Archer and/or Armored Elephant lines to Southeast Asian and Vietnamese civs
    • Additional balance changes to other pre-existing civs

In any case, it's definitely an exciting time to be an AoE2 fan as we get new content to enjoy in two weeks' time.

    How do you play Aztecs?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2022 01:26 PM PDT

The +3 carrying capacity throws off my timing and I miss knights. How do you use these bonus? What's the ebb and flow? 21 pop MAA into Archers opening on Arabia is my go to but feels unwieldy with Aztecs.
