    Conclusion on new Paper Money?

    Posted: 10 May 2022 02:13 AM PDT

So, as you might know, Vietnamese now have a new Paper Money.

Instead of instantly getting some gold, you get a low amount of gold while chopping trees.

Has any kind of consensus been reached about it yet? Did Vietnamese winrate increase/decrease?

No idea where to even find such data so I'm wondering.

    Thought exercise: Archer upgrades

    Posted: 10 May 2022 06:09 AM PDT

I've already gone on record stating that the Crossbowman upgrade is arguably the game's best upgrade in terms of bang for buck, but I want to focus on a different thing entirely: late-game archer upgrades.

In particular, I want to focus on three upgrades with similar cost: Thumb Ring, Arbalester, and Bracer.

    Here's how they stack up.

    Thumb Ring:

    • Cost: 300f, 250w (550 resources)
    • Research time: 45 minutes
    • Available: Castle Age, Archery Range
    • Effect: Makes archers fire faster and increases their base accuracy to 100%. In particular, Archer line units fire ~18% faster.

    Arbalester

    • Cost: 350f, 300g (650 resources)
    • Research time: 50 seconds
    • Available: Imperial Age, Archery Range
    • Effect: Upgrades Crossbowmen to Arbalesters (+5 HP, +1 attack, +5 accuracy)

    Bracer

    • Cost: 300f, 200g (500 resources)
    • Research time: 40 seconds
    • Available: Imperial Age, Blacksmith
    • Effect: +1 attack, +1 range for ranged units

    Some caveats to consider:

    • We're only considering the effect of these upgrades on the Archer line, so disregard the fact that, say, Bracer affects Skirmishers and Cavalry Archers as well.
    • Assume all other Archer line upgrades are available like armor upgrades.
    • Assume that these three techs are mutually exclusive; i.e. if you could only pick one of these upgrades which one will you go for?

Is the music slider broken for anybody else?

    Posted: 10 May 2022 10:36 AM PDT

Just as the title says, since the new dlc dropped the music is quieter than usual even on 100, and in the skirmish screen is even quieter than in the main menu. I tried redownloading the game, checking the integrity of files and still nothing. I know its not a big technical issue or a balancing issue, but its weird playing the game with quiet music. Every other game blows off my eardrums, AoE 2 is silent as hell.

So i'm going for the achievement, I destroyed yellow and purple's TCs and have started fighting orange and it's a real slog with no eco. Did something glitch? The objectives and hints seem to imply I should have gotten vills after beating both AIs.

    Looking for ranked teammates

    Posted: 10 May 2022 12:57 PM PDT

    Hello community!

I started playing 1v1 ranked after decades of smashing AI on Black Forest and it's going better than I expected (~1000 elo so far). After watching lots of T90 on youtube I got a craving for team games, only I don't have people to play with.

Has anyone any tips for a discord etc to join? Also accepting DMs - slide right in. I'm from EU and play usually during evening hours of CET (UTC +1).

Delete if I did some oopsie with this post!

Any tips on Prithviraj 5? (The Legend of Prithviraj)

    Posted: 10 May 2022 08:28 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm trying to do all the campaigns on Moderate and I find myself unable to withstand attacks from the four corners of the map! It wouldn't be the so bad if I could save, but it seems I cannot load a savegame, probably because I do not have the DLC.

The Wikia won't be of much help, since the article for said chapter seems to be outdated.

Do you have any tips or guides for this final chapter? I try to focus on food and gold to buy stone and wall myself and build a couple of castles, but I keep losing vills to a random enemy every now and then.

Edit: Thanks everyone for the tips!

The key was, indeed, focusing on the Ghorids (Grey) first to prevent raids and walling off Yellow at the bottom river to funnel them along with Green, then taking my time, advancing steadily. Keep an eye out for sneaky Blues and Green's Trebuchets!

Unable to select all villagers? Possible bug

    Posted: 10 May 2022 11:08 AM PDT

I use the middle mouse button to select idle vils. (this is the best key for it, anyone who says otherwise is wrong). So naturally, shift-middle mouse is "select all idle vils" button.

But for some reason I cannot get it to work ever since Indian Dynasties. Can someone else try to use this key binding and see if it works?

    My friends screen freezes (Help)

    Posted: 10 May 2022 07:20 AM PDT

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Me and my friends have playing Aoe2 DE for a while now and we have been encountering a weird bug where your screen compeletely freezes about 20-30 mins into the game. There is no way to fix the freeze except for simply quitting the game and the match, causing a lot of rage between us.

We all have good computers and internet connections. Some of my friends play on the steam version and others on the PC Xbox version (GThe bug is ruining the game for us.

Does anybody know a fix for this? We could really use some help

I get the following errors every game. They appear for the kipchak and elephant archer from memory and I don't have any mods installed. I've been getting them for a couple of months now and the game freezes for 10-15 seconds each time. I was playing Cumans today and Kipchaks would randomly disappear

    20 knights in 20 minutes

    Posted: 10 May 2022 02:20 PM PDT

    • Teutons (cheaper farms)
    • 6 villagers in sheep, 1 in berries, 2 lumberjacks and 1 house builder/hunt wild boar

At 10 minutes, you should have done the following:

    • 26/30 population
    • 14 villagers in food
    • 11 villagers in the wood
    • Scout

You should start collecting gold after the 10 minute mark, believe me, you will need it. I have tested this strategy over 10 times and found that you will need a lot of gold, I repeat, LOTS of gold.

Transfer 2 villagers from food to collect gold and create a gold mine. Now you can look at your resources and see if you need more food, if you do, send some villagers to go gather food.

With a population of 32, click to go to Feudal Age:

    By now, you should have:

    • 32/50
    • 11 villagers in the wood still
    • About 12 on food
    • 7 gold miners
    • 1 building a house, and after reaching Feudal, that villager will make the buildings to advance to the Castle Age.
    • Scout

As soon as you start the feudal:

    • Build a Blacksmith with 3 lumberjacks

    • A Stable with 1 or 2 miners

    • Create a row of 3 villagers in the city center

With the 3 villagers who built the blacksmith, make another mining camp in a different gold mine.

Send the 3 new villagers you created in the Town Center (TC) to the new gold mine.

    CASTLE AGE:

    • Meanwhile, DO NOT research any upgrades, because it is impossible to reach 20 knights in 20 minutes if you research them.

    • Using the same builder that built the stables, build 3 more stables for a total of 4

    • Make more houses

Once you reach the Castle Age, put the Knights production in line and DO NOT make create any villagers until you have 20 Knights.

The Knight production is priority. You must have 12 miners and only 8 lumberjacks.

At the 20 minute mark, you must have produced 20 knights non-stop!

The journey of a noob, part 3

    Posted: 10 May 2022 12:53 PM PDT

Hello all! I've made a couple of posts previously that were originally titled "It's really hard being new here." You can read Post 1 and Post 2 at the respective links, but I will give a brief summary later in this post for the lazy. I have decided to continue documenting my journey through the beginnings of my time in AOE2 for a couple of reasons.

First, I think it is obvious that the AoE2 community can only continue to thrive if it continues to grow. Because of that it is important to know what the experience is like for the average new player.

Second, I hope that my journey will be somewhat entertaining and insightful to those here on Reddit. My goal is to make this an interesting story and enjoyable read to the best of my abilities.

With that out of the way, let's begin with a quick recap. On April 26th, in my first post titled "It's really hard being new here" I was struggling with what I felt to be fair matchups. I was having trouble finding games with people of my level and did not feel I was getting the experience that I was promised. Lo and behold I was playing the HD Edition of the game and not the Definitive Edition. I purchased DE and moved on. On April 28th, 2 days later, I posted an update to my situation. I won my first ranked match and overall felt much better about my experience, now that I was playing the correct version of the game. Things seemed to be looking up and I was feeling optimistic. I've made one other post here, asking about where to find my rankings and that is where we start our journey today.

According to AoE2.net, I have now played 21 ranked games. I have won 5, lost 16, dropped 2, and am on a 6 game losing streak with a current win percent of 24%. The highest rating I have held is 826 (my rating after my 10th placement match) and my current rating is 669 (nice).

Currently, and as evidenced by my last post in this sub, I am feeling a bit demoralized by my losing streak. Losing 6 games in a row after only playing 21 in total is quite a blow to the old confidence level. I do plan on continuing to play ranked, but I'm coming in less and less optimistic with each match. I have watch some tutorials on how to start the game, like SotL's first 15 vil's video, but I find my early game lacking... as well as my mid game and late game.

I have been playing primarily playing as the Teutons, but recently started playing as the Franks. I liked the Teutons because of their cheap farms and the high armor of the Teutonic Knights, but I switched to the Franks because... well, I saw they were ranked as an S tier civ and wanted to try them out.

My last game was against a HiSpace who has played over 650 games in total and does one thing very well: Franks. HiSpace destroyed me in the late game, due partially to the fact that I forgot to build a blacksmith until something like 40+ minutes into the game. I was very distracted and not on my A game. I lost a vil to a boar, my dark and feudal TC Idle time was way too high, and in general I played sloppily.

As I sign off on this post, I am about to fire up the game and play another match. I am not sure how frequently I will update this journey, perhaps every 10 matches? IDK, I'll try to work out a system that everyone finds enjoyable. I'll also try to take better notes of each game so that anyone who wishes to toss in their 2 cents can do so with better context of what I am struggling with. Anyway, I hope you all have enjoyed reading this. Please let me know what you would like me to cover in my next installment and how frequently you would like updates. I am determined to at least keep this up for my first 100 games and maybe longer if the sub enjoys it. Either way, it's time to go get matched and see how I fare.

One final note: if you want to follow my profile on AoE2.net, you can do so HERE. This isn't meant to be self-promotion, just an easy way for those interested in seeing what I am doing to get access to the replays (I have no idea how to watch replays, lol)

keyboard and mouse inputs stopped working midgame..

    Posted: 10 May 2022 12:55 AM PDT

Was playing a diplo game about 30+ mins in post imp and was about to make a move so I went to chat to a team mate and when I hit the chat button top right (the two horns) my game became completely unresponsive to any inputs. The game was still running fine and I could do other things on my comp but could not do anything with aoe... So frustrating. Any1 else had this happen before?

Best place to find custom maps?

    Posted: 10 May 2022 02:16 AM PDT

Is there a solid place anywhere to find actual maps? Idealistically Pilgrims style or something, but ofcourse not only those.

I know ingame you can browse for them, but from what I can see you will see all scenarios, which will include... actual scenarios.

Sorry for maybe an obvious question, I don't know where to look.

One Khmer coop mission is now locked behind a DLC

    Posted: 09 May 2022 02:44 PM PDT

I was finishing the coop missions with my brother and we were ready to finish Survayarman campaign, but it turns out that with the release of Dynasties of India DLC, the fourth scenario, Challenging a Thalassocracy now features Dravidians as the player 2 civ. That means that you can't start the missions without the DLC.

I'd be fine with expansion coop campaigns requiring it (Algirdas' campaign seems like it has been made for coop, I would love to play it with my brother!), but it feels like a bummer to have a base campaign mission that used to not require any DLC to now have it require DLC.
