With DM World Cup 5, we intend to showcase a fast-paced, exciting game mode of AoE2:DE featuring the greatest DM players of the world.

    Once in a lifetime moment

I felt there was a lack of civs with bonuses to the siege tower so I made one. What can I improve?

Poll: What does the Reddit AoE2 community really think about Steppe Lancers?

    Posted: 31 May 2022 07:05 AM PDT

Hi all! The Steppe Lancer is a unit that has been the core of a ton of Reddit discussions/threads, and that being available to only 3 of the 42 civs (7%)! I myself have fallen to the temptation of proposing a buff for them, with the idea of making them different enough from the two units that resemble it the most: Knights and Light Cavalry. What is more incredible is that, when you look at Steppe Lancer threads, you find many of them them being positively upvoted, with comments suggesting changes being upvoted; But then, another Redditor comments that they're fine as they are, and their comment also gets upvoted! There is no consensus regarding this unit. In Ned Flanders' words: "Well, I guess this is a case where we'll have to agree to disagree".

When changes are suggested, an idea that often hovers threads is Steppe Lancers replacing entirely the Knight-Line for Steppe civs. All of us argue for each of the civs being unique, and certainly them lacking Knights (the same way as Indian and American civs) but having the Steppe Lancer instead, would add a lot to their uniqueness (without forgetting their already unique features), apart from being an extra point for historical accuracy (they used much more Light Cavalry than Heavy Cavalry). There are many considerations regarding this idea:

    - Should Huns be included on this "Steppe civ group"?

    - Are Steppe Lancers "strong enough" to be used as a core unit for these civs?

    - Wouldn't Cumans (and Huns if included) be strongly nerfed if the Knight replacement was applied?

    - If we replace Knights, shouldn't Cumans (and Huns) get a strong bonus or an extra upgrade for Steppe Lancers?

    - Should Lancers be tweaked for these civs without Knights and so Hussar + Cavalry Archer oriented?

There are also lots of voices claiming not for a Knight replacement, but just for a stat buff. The immediate result of this would suppose a buff for three civs that I don't see in the need of a buff. But not only straight buffs to the unit are considered here. Their role, identity, usage and viability is also under discussion:

    - Should their HP/armor be buffed or be given a bonus attack?

    - Should their cost be reduced or tweaked (more gold intensive and less food intensive like an Eagle Warrior) so that they're more viable in early Castle Age?

    - Is their Elite upgrade cost justified?

    - Should the Knight to Cavalier upgrade research also result on a Lancer to Elite upgrade (the same way as the Galley to War Galley affects Demos and Fire Ships)?

The voices that state that they're fine as they are argue for the uses they currently have:

    - They're a very good raiding unit (range, attack and speed)

    - They support Knights on melee fights from a tile away

    - They support Scouts/Light Cav on relic fights on Arena

    - They can attack vills building walls from outside and rams attacking walls from the inside

    - I watch Survivalist play with Cumans in Arabia and he usually shreds enemies with Lancers (11)

I feel I've covered the main ideas regarding Steppe Lancer balance. So I now ask to you: How do you feel about the current state and the concept of the Steppe Lancer? I wait for your votes and comments! Have a nice day!

Not particularly impressive in the scheme of things, but I'm a noob so it feels like an accomplishment. I'm still slower than I'd like about getting to the Castle Age, but it worked out in the end.

Played on Arena. I ended up letting them boom while building a forward base. Took them out in the Imperial.

The difference between Battles of the Conquerors and Battles of the Forgotten is something

    Posted: 31 May 2022 03:36 AM PDT

I just played Manzikert for the first time in years and it was completely anticlimactic. Got through it with so much ease. Same with Kyoto and Agincourt.

Meanwhile the Forgotten battles are nothing short of genuine epics. You could spend hours playing York, Dos Pilas and Honfoglalas. Lake Poyang is maybe the toughest scenario I've played. Even Bukhara, which is a standard run of the mill build and destroy scenario feels epic.

Should there ever be a civ with a 50% discount on the Heavy Cavalry Archer upgrade?

    Posted: 31 May 2022 12:29 AM PDT

Burgundians get Cavalier and Paladin upgrades half-off, so it'd be interesting if another civ got the HCA upgrade at half price. It feels like something that the Tatars should've gotten, but they're already in a good spot, so it's not needed on them. Mongols or Huns don't need this benefit, as they're already strong.

EDIT: I was looking at the wrong winrate data for Tatars. Thanks for the link, u/JustYourTypicalNerd. Maybe the devs could give this bonus to the Tatars to reinforce their identity as a Cav Archer civ, and to give them a nice boost when they hit Imperial Age. The HCA upgrade is expensive, after all.

    What Paper Money Should Be...

    Posted: 31 May 2022 10:07 AM PDT

Shouldn't paper money act like a form of Gold Standard, whereby you research the tech and get a bonus for all the gold you currently have stockpiled (maybe 25% back?), and then get a continuing trickle for your stockpile (0.04 gold per min per gold? So, 500 gold gets you 20 gold per minute)?

But there should be a downside, like, a small amount of inflation is caused by all gold MINED OR TRADE-CARTED after this tech completes (so if you try to abuse paper money too much everything gets really expensive)...but there's never a downside to AoE2 techs, so I think it's a nonstarter. Anyway, anyone like it?

    Select all unit-type

    Posted: 31 May 2022 04:27 AM PDT

Could we get select-all hotkeys for unit types?

When nothing is currently selected, the action captures all units of that type that are visible. But when units are selected, the action filters out all other units on the screen.

    For instance,

Press shift-c with no units selected would select all cavalry.

Press shift-c with units selected would pull out just cavalry in that selection.

You would have unit types that overlap. Shift-c selects cavalry. Shift-m selects melee. Shift-i selects infantry. Shift-a selects ranged.

Cavalry archers are both ranged and cavalry. Knights are both melee and cavalry.

Example situation: You're in the middle of a battle, but your ally needs help.

You shift-c to select all your visible cavalry, and easily leave your infantry units and foot archers behind to finish your fight.

On your way you see a big ball of undefended skirmishers. You press shift-m to quickly select and redirect your light cav and knights, letting your cavalry archers continue on the original route.

    This is a good idea.

QoL request from Devs. Plz add " Queuing exclude" or "Disable building" button for every production building.

    Posted: 30 May 2022 11:55 PM PDT

    Hi!

I always use "Select all" hotkey but sometimes u dont need produce to units from all buildings. Pro players usually use groupings keys and put their needed buildings in the same group but majorty of players use select all for making units.

    Some examples:

    1. You have several military buildings but u need only front buildings to make units.

    2. In some maps like migration you have several TCs but you dont want to make villagers from your first TC because there is no resources there.

Note: disabled buildings should be selected with "Select-All" hotkey but they ought to be specified by red color.

    Ty.

    Unpopular gameplay

    Posted: 31 May 2022 07:22 AM PDT

Hi guys! First time writing on this sub!

My bf and I picked up playing aoe2 again a couple months ago and have mostly played 1v1 against each other. He likes to rush me in early feudal because he knows he can't beat me in imp (I can manage myself on this end no worries). My question is, has anyone successfully walled an opponent in before? I really want to surprise him with this new tactic, and hopefully do it properly on the first go hahahah. We've watched this on some of t90s videos and I think he'd have a good laugh. Any advice appreciated. :)

Lost historic data in aoe nexus

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there some way of restoring it?

    negative attack? how it works?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 07:53 PM PDT

I know I'm a bit late (about 20 years) if an enemy has 4 melee attack and you have 5 melee armor how can you still take damage? I know negative armor btw & don't forget "It's not a shame to not know, it's a shame not to learn" - Turkish proverb

Can you guys suggest a jack of all trades civ to stick with for awhile?

    Posted: 30 May 2022 10:59 AM PDT

I'm currently at 1.1k~, playing casually. I'm thinking to try and understand the depth of the game a bit better. So I'm trying to main one civ with lots of options. I like Saracens, but their Market bonus can lead to bad habits. So imo Chinese can be a decent option for this, right? I can improve on Chinese start, picked up a few tips here and there. But if you can suggest a jack of all trades civ with a generic start, that'd be great.

    Thank you.

    Pre 1000 elo logjam

    Posted: 31 May 2022 05:20 AM PDT

    The pre 1000elo logjam…am I imagining it?

Am I the only one that feels that if you get a couple wins clear of 1000 elo games get easier to win? for a while I thought there was little difference between 900-1100 elo players but I've noticed when I play at just below 1000 elo I find it harder to win than playing above 1020ish elo and often lose to players with next to no games.

Is there something happening that explains this or is it all in my head?
