    Title.

Hello AOE3 community. I was wondering if there is an AI script that works well and uses decent HC shipments and most importantly, artillery units.

I recently heard the Napoleonic Era AOE 3 fan mod has a fairly competent AI. Has anyone here tried it? I have not. I have not been into mods that stray too far away from the original game by making their own civs and units. Balancing useless cards and pre-existing units is where I'm comfortable. I mostly play 1v1 supremacy no treaty, but have played around in all types of game modes such as FFA, KOTH, deathmatches, and treaties.

Now I've tried a number of AI mods including Draugur AI by Felix in 2007, N30 version 6 & various 2016 updated versions by murp, and Hammerhead AI V3 in 2019. And they all have their flaws and great points.

    ---------------------------------

    Critique of common problems:

Many of these AI I have tried out usually incorporate Draugur AI in some shape or form. I know that the coding of the game is outdate and that Felix took years to create an improved AI over the dumb default in the base game but many of them improve on one aspect only to completely mess up another, such as with Artillery.

    For example,

Draugur is an AI that makes the AI pick from several different options. It can rush, it can boom, and it can turtle, NGL to varying degrees of success, but much more efficiently than the default AI. It does things that the default AI cannot do, such as scout with units, building units to counterattack your army composition, and put a limit on how many production buildings it needs without being wasteful.

However, it has many faults such as being too dependent on mercenaries, sending too many building HP upgrades, poor performance on water based maps, and setting up factories to create artillery all game long. Also, it has not been updated by its original creator since its release (to my knowledge).

Now, N30 is an improvement based on Draugur. It has some improvements such as focusing on making each civilization's best units and improved homecity card selections. Including the more recent variations and updates of the mod, it will do some things that Draugur did not, such as forming a late game walled perimeter, rebuilding lost town centers, offering to resign at a much better time, attacking from angles with lower defenses (making scouting enemy activity more important), performing a specific build order, putting villagers in the town center when in danger, not completely sucking on water maps, going for trade monopolies etc.

But, at least in my experience, it still fails to perform actions that even the Draugur AI did well such as: produce and use artillery without the use of factories and consider non-HC shipment mercenary compositions.

Hammerhead was a more recent release in 2019: Some good things include: defense of territory up to a certain distance of its homecity, improved scouting and treasure gathering. Some glaring issues were sloppy deck composition+shipments, lack of artillery production, and inability to resign.

    ---------------

    Common aoe 3 AI issues:

    1. Decent micro-mangement in a fight by prioritizing units by matchup (i.e. hussars ignoring heavy infantry to take out exposed artillery units, Skirmishers retreating while picking off units, lack of prioritization of important structures or units)
    2. A proper balance of unit composition based on the civilization match-up & refusal to make certain units that are readily available without restriction
    3. Decent performance of a specialized build order across a variety of map types. This includes taking advantage of map terrain such as large map size, small map size, resource abundant, trading posts, natural choke points etc.
    4. Creating a forward base, attack, and commit, while still defending with their units stationed/produced at their spawning point infrastructure; including calling minutemen/irregulars
    5. Use all unit abilities. Not just a certain few. Heavy emphasis on stealth, formation/modes, and wonder abilities.
    6. Armies passing through/by and ignoring the enemy army completely. Even when both parties can clearly see each other.
    7. Individual units, especially Villagers & Hero units over-reacting to an engagement or harassment
    8. Performance on a water dominated map
    9. Lack of effective raiding

    -----------------

If you read this entire thing, you're a beast. I hope you have a darn good one.

TL;DR I'm not looking for an AlphaStar level SC2 AI that has great build orders and micro. I'm just looking to test out decent AI modifications for AOE 3 that use artillery. Help me out please. Not to discredit their creators, most AI out there are poorly programmed but at least there are some which are half decent in certain aspects. I know they put lots of effort into an outdated script and it can be a pain to understand how it works and get all the parts to work together properly. I really appreciate what the individuals of this community have contributed. It is an honor and privilege that there are so many talented content creators out there. Stay safe.

Bad or Good? Obviously nobody wants to be the person getting teamed, but should everyone else just sit around and wait patiently for their turn to lose to the most powerful player in the game?
