Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 8 Week 3: Japanese vs Lithuanians

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 11:48 AM PST

Sorry for being a day late - my computer got delayed in transit T_T

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Teutons vs Vikings, and next up is the Japanese vs Lithuanians!

    Japanese: Infantryand Naval civilization

    • Fishing Ships 2x hp; +0/+2 armor; work +5/10/15/20% faster per age
    • Mills, Mining Camps, and Lumber Camps cost -50%
    • Infantry attack +25% faster starting in Feudal Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Galleys +50% LoS
    • Unique Unit: Samurai (Fast-attacking infantry with bonus damage vs other UUs)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Yasama (Towers fire 2 extra arrows per attack)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Kataparuto (Trebuchets fire, pack faster)

    Lithuanians: Cavalry and Monk civilization

    • Start with +150f
    • Spearmen and Skirmishers move +10% faster
    • Each garrisoned relic gives +1 attack to Knights and Leitis (max. +4 attack)
    • TEAM BONUS: Monasteries work +20% faster
    • Unique Unit: Leitis (Heavy cavalry whose attack ignores unit armor)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Hill Forts (Town Centers +3 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Tower Shields (Spearmen and Skirmishers +0/+1 armor)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alright first discussion featuring Lithuanians! For 1v1 on open maps, they seem to be a relatively strong, if not quite top tier, civ - meaning the match up vs Japanese should be good. I don't think I've ever seen this one played, so go wild! Both civs have very strong starts, lack eco in the midgame, and both are very powerful in trash wars. Who do you favor?
    • On Nomad, Japanese have always been a very strong pick for the same reasons they are strong on hybrid maps in general. However, with Lithuanians starting with so much extra food, they should almost never idle their TC in the early game, giving them some lightning-quick feudal age times. To whom do you give the overall edge here?
    • In a team game setting, Japanese have always been a very strong flank civ, what with the strong early start, access to Arbalests and good Halbs, and strong slow-push with towers and Trebs. Meanwhile, Lithuanians would ostensibly be a deadly pocket civ with their own fast scout rush, followed by Paladins with +8 attack (remember there are extra relics in big team games on DE). Which civ do you find more powerful in their respective positions?

Thanks as always for participating! Again sorry for the delay, but now we should be back on schedule as normal. Next week we will continue our discussions with the Mongols vs Slavs. Hope to see you there! :)

This game needs better chat & invite options.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 02:02 AM PST

At first glance, the basics are all there. You are able to form a clan and you are able to invite people.

But at second glance, these implementations are poor. You can't chat with the people from your clan without finding a way to become friends through Steam (or xboxlive if bought otherwise?).

Neither can you invite people before setting up a lobby or finding a game. It would be nice if you could have a party chat and join games as an established party.

Most of all, I miss statistics. I would love to be able to see win/losestreaks of my friends and clanmates.

I know its an old game but I guess such functions are less engine dependant than actual gameplay functions. I just hope one of the upcoming major updates will improve this part of the game as well. It really would make the game a lot better multiplayer wise.

2v2 AI on Hard and getting destroyed, advice needed

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 06:42 AM PST

Me and my buddy have been trying to play the AI on Hard 2v2 (regicide I may add), and I'm almost convinced it's impossible. We tried the whole Castle age rush strat, then build as many knights as we can then attack and try to kill their villagers but they always just send them into their TC and we end up just wasting our knights and they just come back even stronger and obliterate us. Even if we try to Castle age rush then go economy boom and turtle, then end up massing a huge army with siege units and destroying us. Intermediate is too easy, and Hard is nearly impossible because of how the AI can manage everyone at the same time and we obviously cannot.

We tried doing 2v1v1 and the AI acted completely differently by never even attacking us or each other so we had enough time to build an army and attack and destroy them.

    My questions are:

    1. How they hell are we supposed to win 2v2 on Hard?

    2. Why does the AI act completely differently in 2v1v1?

Why TC drop works so well?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 03:34 AM PST

How the douche (tc drop in dark age) works so many times in pro games, even if the civ does not have any TC bonus like Persians?

The defender has always eco lead, so if both would just garrison and shoot enemy TC, shouldn't the defender win due to having better eco for longer repair?

In a 2v2, is it better to help your teammate when they get doubled?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 05:12 AM PST

Or it's better to get a good boom and then kill all in imp?

Advanced Genie Editor problems with creating units

    Posted: 17 Jan 2020 06:22 AM PST

When using AGE to create units for AOE 1 and AOE 1 DE I had 0 issues, but when using it to create units for AOE 2 HD with all DLCs, I had a problem with the created units giving an error "unit id unknown to DLC system" whenever I tried using them, the problem here is that I just copied units that are from the original game like Paladin and Champion, and simply created new units from them but with higher stats...why should the game have a problem with units created from the base game units?

P.S: Some units do work, but it's kinda based on chance, I found no clear basis that defines what units the game accepts and what others it doesn't

    New AOE DE lag

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 09:35 PM PST

So this only started happening for me in the last couple of days. It's a weird lag where everything constantly pauses, then rushes to catch up. It's unplayable.

I check my internet download /upload speed, and both are fine.

    This sucks. Anyone else?

Can you help totally lost noob-girl? Becarefoul, I have probably very stupid questions.

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 04:16 PM PST

Hi, in the beginning I want to say, I played Age of Empires as a little girl, but I don't remember much. I remember watching my brother playing coz it was too hard for me. But I remember there was some charm in this game, so when I saw Definitive Edition on Windows Pass I decided to grab it.

I realy like the design, the music and overall feel. I had fun with toturial, and everything was clear, even I don't speak English very well and I had to check up many military words. Unfortunately there is no localization for my native language, but I hope to overcome it.

So after toturial I still feel like I know nothing. There is so many civilizations to choose from and they don't say which ones are for beginners. I tried some randomly and it didn't look like toturial at all, and I was lost.

I looked up some toturials and walktroughts in the Internet, but they are either too basic I learn nothing new, or too detailed I feel too dump to understand them.

So I have some basic questions, I hope nobody will get offended I don't understand this game yet.

So what is this game mostly about? I got fooled it's about building towns, but I think it's mostly about military and fighting? And the village is only to support army? Are there any peaceful missions, or it's always about destroying someone?

Is there any way game teaches about more advance aspects after the toturial or I'm on my own? Coz I know there are some stronger and weaker points of every troops and some are better for specific enemies, but I have problems with memorizing it.

Can you recommend easy campaigns/civilisations for beginner? Coz they don't have much description and I don't know where to start.

Is standard difficulty ok for total noob or should I go lower?

I have problem with point clicking. When I want soldiers to go somewhere I most of the time click nerby villagers and monks by accident and they all go in one big group and it's hard to catch sneaky ones. Is there some way to mange people or am I doing something wrong? Can I somehow fish one type of people from the group?

Is there a way to tell all my soldiers to go back to their buildings without clicking on them? Coz I sometimes loose some guys somewhere and I can't find them in the bush.

How does population work? I understand there is population cap and I can't have more people? Is this dependant of the houses or there is overall limit in the game? When I create new soldier I need free villager before or they are created separately? Do soldiers live in the houses or just villagers?

Is there an easy way to catch unemployed villager and give him a job? Coz I think there was something in the toturial but I didn't catch it.

    Can I rotate buildings?

How many ages there is? How far I can advance? Is there something better than castle age?

Do you have any general tips or tricks?

    Team Game issues on DE

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 03:11 PM PST

I have played 15 games so far and in about 50% of those games one or more people have dropped out early on. It has even happened to me twice, where as soon as I hit Feudal or Castle my game just crashed. The few times there has been no drops the teams have been severely mismatched, often with the two strongest players in the same team.

Only one match was actually evenly matched.

Have you noticed similar issues? Are they going to work on it?

Is anyone else *way* better at DE than HD?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:59 PM PST

    Hey all.

On HD, I regularly get my ass handed to by 1650s... But in DE, I've been able to pull off all of my strategies really well that I've learned from T90 videos, keep track of everything, and play at a much better level.

I'm not sure if it's the ability to scroll out, the interface, or what... But for some reason, I play better at DE than I do at HD.

Does anybody else have the same?

What FPS do you guys have? Do you use the Enhanced Graphics Pack?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 07:10 PM PST

Hello my fellow AOE 2 DE players! I'm considering upgrading my PC because I feel like a better PC would make this game better. At the beginning of games I have around 100-90 but later with lots of units and buildings it gets as low as maybe 45-48.

What FPS do you guys generally have at the beginning of the game (few buildings and units) VERSUS later in the game (lots of buildings, villager gathering and fighting etc). And do you use the Enhanced Graphics Pack or other mods? Any specific settings that you use?

Has anyone here ever downloaded the 'ULIO' custom scenario from the Age of Kings Heaven website? It's honestly a masterpiece and I'd love to be able to get in touch with the guy who designed It, whoever he is in order to see what his creative inspiration was for the project.

Random question that popped into my head watching the NAC3 series between Viper and Yo. What would happen if Viper started spamming about Tiananmen Square in chat or something like that? How closely are Chinese gamers in general monitored?
