    France & Cuirassiers for Aoe3:DE - DISCUSSION

There are hundreds of threads complaining about the unit but I think in this thread we should really figure out people's thoughts about it and what can be done going into DE, if anything should be done.

    https://strawpoll.com/k7a778gr

Above I created a strawpoll for various changes I feel the community would favor for this unit. I'm curious to get everyone's views on it.

As for my opinion on the unit, I think they should still feel strong and satisfying to use, as a specialty unit, but I think they should be harder to mass. For this I think even a simple fix would suffice, like nerfing their siege damage to be mediocre. This way, a french player would have to supplement their force with other siege based units if they want to make a strong offensive. Or nerfing their area damage to one, down from 2. They would still be very strong, but the opposing player's army wouldn't have to outnumber the Cuirassier's as much to take them down. Their area damage is part of the reason they can still cut down groups of muskets and even dragoons if they get close enough. Another soft nerf can also be removing or reworking thoroughbreds to do something else, a card that encourages spam.

But why is Cuirassier spam a bad thing? I think this creates an extremely boring match for both players. France could be such an interesting nation with their large troop pool and native upgrades, but often times the most viable strategy for them is booming and focusing on Cuir mass as soon as possible. Why should they worry about creating skirms, which can be cut down by cavalry, when they can instantly create a super cavalry unit that can win most of the fights they get sent into? Some might argue that alot of nations have a 'spam' unit, but usually these units have a clear defined weakness. British Musket spam will still lose to artillery and skirmishers easily, even other civ's specialty units such as War Wagons will still lose to a Skirmisher mass cost effectively and time effectively, Cuirs feel different though, it feels so much more is needed to beat them, even with counters. Kiting with LC, or vastly outnumbering them with Heavy infantry is required just to win a trade with them, without to mention they can be created instantly with throughbreds(which I believe has been removed in DE thanks to the ESOC balance patch)

Which leads me to my next point most people overlook - Cuirs aren't strong/relevant in pro play nearly at all, because of the quick pace of matches and how rare games last to where an economy can support a Cuir mass. So is this all just a case of 'git gud'? Honestly, yes in my opinion. Which would be fine, but most of the playerbase doesn't belong to that bracket, many beginner and even intermediate players could play a great game with knowledge of the unit counters, but will become frustrated when they find their opponent is massing a single cavalry unit that is beating their counters, while keeping a better eco and better map pressure. I don't believe that type of gameplay is healthy, and could turn/discourage new players from getting into the game.

Anyways those are my thoughts on the unit,

tl;dr What are your thoughts on Cuirassier's and do you think they should be changed? Are they healthy for the game? I think we should discuss this topic once and for all here, instead of having millions of threads every other week complaining about this unit.

DE team, please make rated games available via quicksearch only

Came back to AOE after a long time, and it's impressivee how apparently the majority of the people I see on the ESO servers are such insecure, whiny people. If you have a high WR (even though it's due to few games played), half of the lobby asks the host to kick you, if they don't like your deck, same, civs aswell. Even worse for treaty games. Nobody chooses random teams, everything has to be calculated, it's ridiculous. Compared to SC2, LoL, AoM and other games I've played the community is really a bunch of babies. I have the feeling these are casual gamers who wouldn't really thrive in a more competitive game (especially treaty only players), which I hope DE will be.

So yeah, take away the possibility of lobby ranked games and let us have a healthier ladder PLEASE.
