Age of Empires 2 - The Game That Keeps on Giving

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 04:33 AM PDT

Confession thread. I'm "X" ELO but I still do "Y"

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 05:40 AM PDT

Sometimes we all need a reminder that we're not alone in being total crap at this game. Like many of you, I find myself watching low ELO legends sometimes, seeing the upper end (900-950) which is where I am, and wondering why I never get to play these noobs, and then I have moments like I had yesterday that remind me I am that noob.

I'm 900RM ELO, 1500 TG, but on a 3 v 3 on Arena, an hour into the game, 4 hussars got sent to my 4th TC on the woodline outside my gate. They killed around 15 villagers there, then followed a trade cart through my gate, and killed literally every villager inside my walls except for 4 that were in range of a castle. I lost 111/115 villagers to 4 hussars that weren't even being controlled, and only noticed this when I watched the replay because in the stats screen my largest army like like 156.

For the record I won the game (was Teutons, and only won because an opponent bought a ton of food to make skirms, resetting the market price, and allowing me to cash in 8K unneeded food for 3K gold to spam Paladins/SO in a trash war), but this is how bad I am. Anyone got better?

    Unknown abbreviations

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 06:28 AM PDT

I noticed, there are lots of abbreviations thrown around the aoe - community, which may be difficult for beginners or newcomers to understand. I would like you to post any questions, or answer them if you can. I try to update this post, so it's easier to navigate.

How to have fun with weaker players?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 03:10 AM PDT

I recently got a colleague into the game and it's really fun to play with him. However, he's pretty new, and while he's making great progress, 1v1s feel like bullying him. We're mainly doing coop games or team games vs AI. Are there any other (unranked) game modes you would recommend?

Edit: thanks for the suggestions. I'm still pretty low elo myself, so training "bad behaviour" (no queues/hot keys) is something I'd like to avoid. Giving him a head start is something we could try.

Can we please get buffs for less used units in the game?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 04:55 PM PDT

My main one is siege tower since with a little buff, it really opens up Arena as soon as you hit castle age.

Also maybe a elephant archer buff even if it is situational.

Im sure you could gather metrics from pro games for unit use and quantify which units need a buff and monitor over time to see if it improves/worsens use

Edit: elephant archer. Not battle elephants

Double clicking palisade/stone walls foundations shouldn't also select built walls as well

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 10:48 AM PDT

Especially when the game lays down a dumb L wall foundation and you have to do a quick delete to rebuild the walls. It's very unlikely that you'd need to select foundations and built walls when the only function for double clicking walls is for deletion.

How do you deal with rude/unpolite players?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 08:10 AM PDT

    Hello there!

    How are you guys?

As the title says, how do you deal with rude/unpolite players?

I'm 32, married and soon to have a family (time to play games is very limited atm) and I play occasionally after work (maybe 8 games a week something like that I'm 1200is ELO)

I really enjoy the game and I do not mind losing, but what really put my off is people talk trashing me on in game chat calling me noob, pleb etc out of the blue. - Today for example someone nicknamed BigAI started to do so when saw I had some walls up.

I play TGs on the weekends with friends who are around the same age and all agree that this kind of things is what eventually will remove all the willingness to play the game.

I'm sorry for the rant - prob I just should ignore these things

    Cheers

For those struggling with surviving 20 min in Barbarossa brawl

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 03:21 PM PDT

I'm a pretty newbie player (I play this game a lot but not online and against moderate - hard AI only / friends), and I saw some people having the same issues I was having for this event, made more stressful by the fact that it's a limited time unlock. So I'd just like to share my pretty simple strategy step by step so anyone can follow it, and hopefully give them the strat or just an idea of their own to survive that 20 mins mark.

As soon as the game starts, spam the - key on your numpad to slow down the game to its slowest speed. Not 100% necessary and some might call it scummy but you want every advantage you can get. After that, put 3 vills on a TC near the stone pile at the top of your island, and 3 more next to the gold pile near the northwest bridge. Make vills from your main TC and put them on food (I put them on berries first, then when I get a good number swap to boar, then farms once those are gone. You can get sheep but I didn't so its not necessary). When the two other TC's are done building, have them spam out vills for wood / gold for the northwest one and stone for the north one. While those TCs are being built, use your remaining vills to house wall the northwest bridge (by your new TC), the southwest bridge (by the sheep spawn), and the open hole in the the forest on the southeast coast of the island. Once a vill is free, make two barracks and about 10 pikes to sit in your eastern castle, and make 5 teutonic knights as well. This will be your main defensive force for the first wave. While all this is happening, keep up villager production to have a strong early economy. The enemies WILL break through at some point, so getting a ton of resources early is crucial.

Once the first wave begins to crash from the east, send out your army in front of your castle to clog up the knights first wave. Don't leave them out there too long, just enough to do some damage. When they start getting low hp, garrison them back and let the castle do the heavy lifting. Their job is now to deal with any rams / trebuchets. Nothing but infantry or siege does any substantial damage to castles so letting waves of knights attack your castle is actually ideal. If you spot a ram, let it get close before ungarrisoning to minimize damage to your units. If you see a treb setting up, ungarrison your entire force, run to it, and beat it to death. Trebs are your worst nightmare in this mode. Once it dies, bring them back and let them heal up. Their army will eventually flag (though they will send a constant trickle of units after you - nothing the castle can't handle as long as you have a few TKs to handle any wayward rams) and you can shift your focus to other matters.

While you defend against green's wave, you need to be watching your economy and multitasking. Nothing besides rams and trebs really require much attention, so focus on growing your economy as much as possible - you want to make hay while the sun shines. Produce a few more pikes in the barracks (6 - 8) and maybe a few tks to reinforce any losses. Take your stone miners off stone as soon as you hit 650 and set up a new castle near the the northwestern bridge, garrison your military in the new castle once it's up and green is defeated, and prepare for the next assault. Orange will hit you just as hard, though they won't bring any trebs so it's not as difficult as green or purple. But before you worry about that, make sure you construct a stable relatively early on in your game, and produce 10 knights within it before the end of the next wave - you'll need those knights later.

Orange is pretty simple to deal with - the knights will get distracted with your house wall and take moderate damage from the castle fire. Once they breach, garrison your vills in the northwest TC to help provide more damage and protect them. The knights won't do much, so same as last time - let the castle chunk the enemy while your infantry watch for rams. Watch out though; Orange will also throw some siege onagers at you, and these will devastate your army if you aren't careful. To deal with them, micro your castle to fire at them as soon as they come in range (you can try to bait them with units if they stay too far away) and they'll drop pretty fast. Once the siege onagers fall, it's business as usual - ungarrison for any rams and let the castle do work otherwise.

During orange's assault, you should get enough stone for another castle if you've been constantly putting vills on stone, so set up another castle near the southwestern front - I keep it close to my TC so that trebs can't take it down from across the river. You should also have those 10 knights ready. Reinforce your army with more pikes and tks, and set them up in the new castle. During all this, the other enemies (only green at this point) will keep trickling enemies toward you, so just make sure each castle has a few tks inside for sniping rams and you'll be golden.

Purple will send a veritable army of archers your way, along with a few trebs. This is why we need the knights, and also why we backed up our castle. The archers tend to push forward into your base while the trebs get distracting hitting buildings along the coast, so they'll lag behind while the archers push into your base, get cut down by castle fire, and thin their numbers enough for you to run the knights out once the trebs start targetting your castles, cut them down, and run back to the castles while suffering minimal damage. Use the knights to deal with any rams as well, as they're durable and mobile enough to survive any archer fire they recieve. Deal with any rams from any of the other civs while you whittle down purple's army and they, too, will eventually quiet down.

If you survived this long, you're pretty much set. Unfortunately, blue and cyan will join the party at this point, sending huscarls, siege rams, more capped rams, and more onagers your way. At this point, your role is pretty much damage control until 20 mins. Snipe any rams headed to your castles with garrisoned tks, set up a 4th castle if you have the stone for it (I put mine next to the monastery), send your knights wherever they're needed most (for rams and siege only - they're too valuable to trade 1:1 against AI knights and the castles will hold against everything else). Eventually the AI will send too much for you to deal with (unless you're a better player than I, in which case you wouldn't need this guide) but if you just hold the line, they won't breach your TC before 20 mins. (I ended with around 7 minutes left on the clock but I stopped playing as soon as I beat 20 mins so you could probably hold out longer if you kept up the fight).

This guide is not guaranteed to work ofc and it's hard to explain every single detail of how someone plays this game, but it worked for me, and even if it doesn't work for you, I hope it gives you some ideas to bolster your defense. I wish I could share a guaranteed 100% of the time strat, but I'm not that good and TBH, improving at this game is the best way to win challenges like these - there are few things that can't be overcome with better micro and game knowledge, I've noticed. If you have any questions or want clarification, post a comment. If you have any improvements (that can be applied by a relatively new player, as that is who this guide is meant for), post one as well.

Do Woad Raiders still have an attack bonus vs buildings?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 10:49 PM PDT

I've seen contradictory statements on this. The tech tree seems to indicate that they do not, but I know they used to.

If not, what's the best use for them?

If so, is it ever preferable to go champion?
