Some food for thought, regarding the naming of Native American civilisations

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 11:54 AM PDT

I will add the disclaimer, I am not offended, I find it interesting to learn the names native American peoples use to refer to themselves but as a native English speaker, I want to introduce a logical conundrum.

If I wish to play as the central European people we Brits call "Germany", I do not have the option to select Deutschland, in fact it is worse than this, Deutschland did not exist at the time and was in fact refered to as Preußen (Prussia) and for whatever reason Microsoft has deemed it appropriate to merge the Kingdom of Austria with this "Germany" which did not exist at the time, even though they were different cultures, with different religions, ruling families and military structure.

Germans are White so they ought to be paying for the sins of the past, lets have another go at this.

Lets take India, which actually did not exist either at the point this game is set, because India comprised hundreds of various kingdoms with varying cultures and religions, a Punjabi Muslim Mughal is not the same as a Southern Indian Tamil who is a Hindu and they were from different regions and kingdoms, fought one another and most definitely never referred to themselves as being Indian. The word "India" being a poor Anglocised translation of "Hindia", the Brits just thought, they speak Hindi, call them the land of the Hindi speakers. That is ignoring the fact some people who lived inside what Brits call India, speak Bangla, Urdu, Tamil or other languages.

Oh dear, Microsoft has done a very poor job of removing racism from this game because it seems using non-native words for civilisations and peoples is fine, just so long as those peoples originated outside America

Microsoft has projected the North American experience onto their removal of racism and ignored a lot of other racism, just so long as that racism is not related to the history of America. Which in of itself seems pig-ignorant.

    I miss the online profiles

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 06:50 PM PDT

The ranks, the avatars, the ability to jump on someone else's profile and see their Homecities. There was something quite rewarding about having your own public profile? I feel like this game delivers the game's experience well enough, but the online social experience falls rather flat.

Do you guys think they'll add more Civilizations to DE?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 12:12 AM PDT

Playing the historical battles made me presume that there might be an African DLC in the Future, or at least more revolter nations. But I primarily was thinking that we might get another Asian Civ and Italy, as it was cut content just like Sweden. What are your thoughts?

Why are farms and rice paddies so vastly inferior to mills and estates?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 12:11 AM PDT

If you don't know what I'm talking about, allow me to introduce you to the concept of a gather rate: Each possible resource you can gather has a base gather rate per villager, and all upgrades modify that base rate. For example, the base gather rate chopping wood is 0.5 wood per second per villager. Research an upgrade that increases wood gather rate by 10% and you're now gathering wood at 0.55 wood per second per villager. Add in a 20% upgrade and your gather rate is increased to 0.65 wood per second per villager. Because the system works this way, resources that gather at a higher base rate benefit the most from upgrades, while resources that gather with the lowest base rates benefit the least.

This brings us to mills, estates, farms, and rice paddies. Mills gather food at a base rate of 0.67 per villager, while farms gather food at a base rate of 0.50 per villager. Estates gather coin at a base rate of 0.50 per villager. Finally, rice paddies can gather either food at a base rate of 0.50 food per villager, or gather coin at a rate of 0.34 per villager. As you can see, there is a pretty significant difference in favor of the base gather rate of the mill and estate compared to the competition, and that gap only gets wider as economic upgrades come in. Let's assume that you've made it all the way to the imperial age and have researched every relevant economic upgrade: Mills now gather at 1.3 while farms and rice paddies gather at 0.975, and estates gather at 1.05 while rice paddies gather at only 0.75. This means that a fully upgraded mill is 33% better than a fully upgraded farm or rice paddy and a fully upgraded estate is 40% better than a fully upgrade rice paddy. That brings me to my question: Why is there such a large gap between mills and estates vs. farms and rice paddies? I know that they're more versatile buildings, but that hardly seems like enough justification for being so massively inferior as far as gathering resources is concerned. Hell, the gap gets even wider if you send common economic boost cards like economic theory, refrigeration, and royal mint.

For those curious, here is a link to the gather rates and possible upgrades for all resources: https://wiki.eso-community.net/Gathering_Rates

I always thought the original Haudenosaunee home city was lackluster

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 09:11 PM PDT

While the Haudenosaunee had no cities on the scale of European capitals, I still find the original home city very lacking. Home cities are meant to show the pinnacle of urban development reached by these civilizations at that time. The Haudenosaunee home city definitely didn't do this. It's not that the Haudenosaunee didn't have urban environments. Take the town of Teiaiagon for example. It was home to as many 5000, with a main plaza and and a palisade fortification wall. I would have really liked to see it portrayed in the game, or the many other Haudenosaunee towns of similar sizes. The rest of the home cities feature the largest city of the civilization, why shouldn't the Haudenosaunee?

Changing camera controls to WASD doesn't work?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 11:21 PM PDT

So I tried changing the keybindings for moving the camera to WASD instead of the arrow keys with the key bindings set to default. I have it set to not allow conflicts and I unbinded the keys from other stuff anyway and but I still can't use WASD for the camera. Any tips?

Age of Empires 3's weird historical inaccuracies are a result of AoE2

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 03:56 PM PDT

This is a personal theory I have regarding at least some of the weird stuff in AoE3:

AoE3 doesn't take place in real history, but in the history created by the campaigns of AoE2. Most notably, the Montezuma campaign. At the end of that, like in many AoE2 campaigns the player is tasked to win a historical defeat.

This would explain why in the Aztec Temples mission, set sometime in the late 16th century, the Aztecs are 1. Still a civilization and 2. Explicitly still control Tenochtitlan. In the Age of Empires timeline Cortez failed to conquer them (given your actions in the Temples level too, maybe they'll be around much longer now).

Although I can't see any other evidence for this or any effect from other campaigns (what would it mean for William Wallace to win his campaign? etc.) It's just a fun theory I've had. Maybe this is why all of the weird ahistorical adventures happen - some strange butterfly effects from AoE2?

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Migrate profile from Microsoft to Steam version

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 12:17 AM PDT

I had the famous 1 dollar discount of Game Pass for a month, kinda strategically for the release of the DE, but know I wonder if I buy the Steam version and log with the same Windows account do I keep my progress: home city, campaign, scenarios, achievements, etc.? My guess would be that it should since it has crossplay and you need to use your Live account.

I know the game released like 3 days ago, but I can't find any info on this or maybe I'm wording it wrong but as you know Microsoft isn't very clear or helpful at all. Tried looking with AoE 2 DE since it is similar but can't find answers either and I'm afraid profiles might be different between games because Microsoft gonna be Microsoft.

    Has anyone tried it before?

    Well, some things didn't change

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 02:50 AM PDT

I'm struggling to find any aspect in which DE is an improvement over AOE3

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 05:37 PM PDT

    • Ridiculous pop-in when clicking around the map
    • Really poor performance on high-end GPUs
    • Complete and total lack of visual clarity
    • Unfinished sound design for reworked civs
    • Physics system downgraded
    • Incredibly unresponsive gameplay
    • Terrible UI rework
    • Near-constant crashes
    • No ability to reconnect
    • Removal of the Home City Card unlock tree
    • Significantly worse AI

I was so unbelievably hyped for this remaster, since AOE3 is my favorite from the series, and now I'm just incredibly disappointed (and completely hopeless about AOE4 being anywhere near decent).

How long did it take them to fix AOE2DE?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 07:08 PM PDT

I remember optimization in AOE2DE was not good either when released, and then I didn't have the time for gaming for quite a while. It is at least acceptable at present.

As they're giving a day 1 hotfix, we might probably except constant fixing and maintenance of the game.

Tbh I wasn't even surprised when they released an unfinished, unpolished version. The only fear I have is they discard it after the release , as some apparent problems in the beta tests are not addressed.

I think the devs did well

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 05:35 AM PDT

I never got to play AOE3 and I'm really loving DE. I've noticed bugs but the fact that this game got released despite how covid may have made devving this more difficult, still leaves me impressed with the final product. I dont mind the voice acting or the mechanics of fur trading. I enjoy what they've put together and really hope this game can become more popular. That being said; I'm still too scared to play multiplayer.

Black screen in Story mode? First mission, any idea why?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2020 01:46 AM PDT

What do you think to the casual lobbies? I find it concerning we have a lack of details of other players.

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 10:59 AM PDT

I know we have ranked mode but put that aside...

In casual mode we can't; - view how many games played - view any rank or Elo - view decks - view their profile?

All this information is quite important to have because I would never team with someone for a treaty40 game who hasn't got a treaty deck. Now I'm forced to wait until they select one mid game and well if he has a noob deck I'm not wasting time and I'll resign.

It's casual so rank shouldn't matter. But number of games would be nice.

    Thoughts ?
