Debbies 2nd Charity Stream- BO5 Showmatch TheViper vs Jordan

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 01:05 PM PST

Hello everyone, just wanted to post this here: Tomorrow ( 14GMT 18th of Dec) Ill be having a charity Stream on my Channel twitch.tv/D_e_b_b_i_e. A Bo5 Showmatch between Viper and Jordan- all games being played. You can rig these matches by bidding money before the matches for Civ and Map picks as well as during the games. During the games you can buy things of a shopping List ( https://i.imgur.com/czDhH5i.png ). So the two players will be told for instance „Vipi delete 10 vills" „Jordan you need to delete your TC right before Imperial kicks in"- I will be in voice with them- these are just examples. How everything works in detail, I will be telling tomorrow on my Stream I start 13GMT, so 1 hour before the matches start. The Charity is for Pfotenhilfe Sauerland like last time, the Organisation Vipi and I are a fosterhome of and have Justus from. More information will be given tomorrow. Hope to see you there and have some fun with the bois and rig the hell out of their games with a good cause in mind🙏🏻

It is Open Casting for everyone but you need to mention and explain which charity stream this is and what ppl can do on my channel to rig the games. 👍🏻

Will Lords of the West be the first in a series of new expansions?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 12:35 AM PST

The wording on the steam page specifies that LotW is the "first official expansion to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition" that implies to me that they have more planned down the line that adhere to this smaller expansion strategy.

If it is the case, that might mean maybe a couple more small expansions to flesh out long requested parts of the world are in the pipeline, which could actually be fitting since its hard to see how some places would need 4 entire civs to fit in for them.

So I'm going to guess there will be a mini-expansion for India that might have long requested variation so its not just a singular Indian civ to represent the whole sub-continent, my guess for civilizations in that would be the Cholas and the Bengalis, with the current Indians more explicitly representing the Delhi sultanate.

After that there could one for more African civs that weren't included in the game, to that end I think the Somali and either the Kingdom of Kongo, or Kanem-Bornu would be the most obvious, using the current African set.

Finally, if there a third one I could see an expansion for the states near China, which could be featuring the Jurchen (who would later be known as the Manchu), and the Tibetans, but if that's not politically hot, alternatively there could also be Thai.

I hope this is the last of the European civs ever added to the game with LotW honestly, so sorry to Poland, but I don't really know what they could do with them anyway to distinguish them from the Slavs, Lithuanians and Magyars. Some thing I really hope they can do is making the civs featured more distinctive based on their geography, so maybe we could finally have African civs feature black villagers or make monks and trade carts relevant to their locations, ie, Muslim civs have Imams and use Camel caravans.

    Scout rush advice

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 01:05 AM PST

Outsode of going full scout spam. Any tips on scout rushing? How many do you tend to make. What do you do that makes you say that was a successful rush. Presumably because each scout is so food expensive and will delay your castle time you want to pick of a vil or two. Is it1 vil per scout? Is it worth getting upgrades? Presumably your first scout will give you the info needed to sdecide some of these questions. Please don't answer it depends. Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

Do we have any info on how the ladder will work with the new DLC?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 04:47 AM PST

I was just wondering if there was any info regarding the new DLC and the ranked ladder. Will people with and without it be able to play with/against each other? Or will we have restrictions like HD had?

If you ask me, I'd rather have a single ladder with everyone in the same pool, and people without the DLC will just be unable to pick the new civs. There's been some "pay to win" discussion to this idea, but I just don't think it really matters in the ladder (it probably is very important in a tournament/civ draft setting though). What do you think would be the best solution for this?

Are the Burgundians and Sicilians really that radical?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 07:36 AM PST

Over the past couple days I've seen countless people say that the new civilizations fundamentally violate the game and break the established rules of aoe2s design.

I grew up with the game so I can remember getting the conquerors expansion decades ago and being incredibly surprised by what the new mesoamerican civilizations were. A civilization with no cavalry OR gunpowder?? Instead they had to invent an entirely new unit to be a knight, scout cavalry, and infantry unit all at the same time, and give them insane eco bonuses to compensate for their limited options, and give them crazy good infantry counters because other heavy infantry countered their bread and butter unit, the eagle warrior. How would this not break the fundamental design of aoe2? And they were so ahistorical! They had full blacksmiths, siege workshops, navies, and trebuchets! In my age of empires?? Outrageous! And yet, over 20 years of being slightly overpowered and dominating competitive gameplay alongside the Huns, they are probably the most beloved, fun, and interesting civilizations in the game. How did we get here? When did we become a community so terrified of design risk and learning to play against new things? I wish that the new civilizations didn't have all their bonuses be one time powerspike resource exchanges, but otherwise I don't see anything that couldn't be easily balanced through the tech tree, resource costs, or through changing the actual numbers.

I think it is very important to voice your concern and have productive dialogues, but does anybody feel like the outrage over their design is overblown? The mesoamerican and to a lesser extent, the SEA civs, took much bigger, more disruptive risks to the core design of the game, and the game survives and is even more fun to play because of it.

    New to AoE2

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 05:15 PM PST

Hey everyone. I played several rts games over the years. I've played sc2, wc3, aoe3 and the expansions, empire earth and empires dawn of the modern world.

I think aoe2 is by far the best one. I can see why the community is so strong after 20 years. I'm glad I found this game and I wish it was sooner.

I was ranked pretty high on aoe3. It was my first age game. I look forward to this sub and learning the game.

So thanks everyone for keeping the community going so I could join it 20 years later!

    Helbardier/Pikemen question

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 04:59 AM PST

    Hey guys,

Imperial age scenario, you need to go spearline. Would you prefer fully upgraded pikemen (or with a small bonus like malians) or subpar helbardiers missing important upgrades (like magyars, khmer etc)? And why?

For the sake of argument lets leave out viking and aztec pikes. I feel there was already enough discussion about them.

New castle designs NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT!

New castle designs NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT!

The fact that I haven't seen a single person address this in a post or on a youtube video is INSANE! (at most Hera mentioned that the Burgundian castle looked new)

    Here is the Donjon.

    Donjon

Here is the DE Mediterranean and Western European Castle

    Both original DE Castles

Here is the new Burgundian/WEstern European Castle

    Burgundian Castle

Here is the new Scicillian/ Mediterranean Castle

    New Scicillian/Mediterranean Castle

There are a few options to explain what the hell is going on.

    1. We getting civ specific castles for each civ.
    2. the Mediterranean and Western European Castle designs are being replaced.
    3. The Western European Castle Design is being replaced and the Fortress building in the editor is getting architectural variants.
    4. I'm just crazy and seeing new buildings no one is talking about.

Advice for a 1000~ ELO who'd like to improve

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 06:29 AM PST

Hello my fellow villagers. I'd love to hear some of your ideas on this. My current ELO is a bit above 1000, so I'm at a stage where I know the basic build orders and I can manage basic things alright, but I'd like to know what the best way would be to get a bit better (on 1v1s), as I don't really know how to approach it.

I usually play with random civs, but I've started thinking that's probably a bad idea, cause then I don't know any of them well at all. So, I guess I'd like to know:

    1. Do you guys reckon it's best to pick one civ and stick to it for a while, till I get decent with it and know it well? If so, does it matter at all which one? I guess it's better not to pick an especially weird one, such as the Huns who have no houses, cause then my experience won't translate well when I move onto a different civ.
    2. Should I just keep playing 1v1s over and over at my low ELO, or should I be focusing on studying more specific aspects of the game? (Example, how to carry out an efficient archer flush and transitioning into knights later on, or whatever.) Is it the case where just playing a lot is the main thing?
    3. Any other helpful advice? I believe I've already watched enough pro games in my life, and that makes you feel like you're learning a lot, but I don't think that actually translates very well into the game. They're different things altogether.

    Thanks so much! :)
