    Excuses for Losing

    • 'Odsblood! I accidentally resigned by mistake.
    • My townsfolk began too close to mine kingdom's Town Center.
    • Far too many birds flew over mine kingdom.
    • A mere a single scout was present to serve in the beginning.
    • My sheep perished when my folk sought to use it as food.
    • Forsooth, I couldst not tame any wolves.
    • All my beginning citizenry were male.
    • Thy heraldic color was superior to mine own.
    • My ignorant folk couldst not replant the berries!
    • Thou art human, with soul and wit. I am naught but clockwork!
    • My throne was most uncomfortable.
    • Forsooth, the nearby boars grunted too loudly and frequently.
    • 'Zounds! I couldst not build a Wonder in the Dark Age!
    • I couldst not comprehend mine folks' speech!
    • My peasants wert puling wretches (a puny 25 hit points)!
    • The shore fish near mine villager appeared all too sleepy.
    • A graceless hillock rose too near my Town Center.
    • My peasants' huts all faced different directions!
    • The deer fled when mine hunters sought to slay them.
    • When I commanded a peasant to hunt fierce boar, it slew him.
    • My peasants foolishly walk on foot instead of astride ponies.
    • Alas, I could find naught but fools gold.

Did you know that 1 year ago...

    • Bulgarian Paladins existed
    • Leitis cost 80 gold
    • Indian fishermen worked 5% faster than now
    • Persian town centers worked 5% faster in Dark age
    • Tueton Paladins had 5 melee armour

    Feels like so long ago...

Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 11 Week 16: Byzantines vs Japanese

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:23 PM PDT

Some more Age of Kings classics!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Aztecs vs Teutons, and next up is the Byzantines vs Japanese!

    Byzantines: Defensive civilization

    • Buildings +10/20/30/40% hp per Age
    • Camels, Skirmishers, and Spearmen cost -25%
    • Fire Ships attack +25% faster
    • Advancing to the Imperial Age costs -33%
    • Town Watch free
    • TEAM BONUS: Monks +50% heal speed
    • Unique Unit: Cataphract (Heavy, anti-infantry cavalry with resistance against cav counter units)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Greek Fire (Fire Ships +1 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Logistica (Cataphracts gain +6 damage vs infantry; deal 5 trample damage)

    Japanese: Infantry (and Naval) civilization

    • Fishing Ships x2 hp; +0/+2 armor; +5/10/15/20% work rate per Age
    • Mills, Lumber Camps, and Mining Camps cost -50%
    • Infantry attack +33% faster starting in Feudal Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Galleys +50% LoS
    • Unique Unit: Samurai (Powerful infantry with bonus damage against other UUs)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Yasama (Towers fire 2 additional arrows)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Kataparuto (Trebuchets fire +33% faster; pack/unpack 4x faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Interesting one here imo! For 1v1 on open maps, I would say that both of these civs are upper-mid-tier-ish, with both having some powerful options, but also missing a long-term eco bonus. Byzantines are insanely consistent with their strong trash units and defenses, but Japanese have some very potent aggressive options with their swordsmen, and are certainly no slouches when it comes to cost-efficient late game armies. Who do you favor?
    • On hybrid maps, Japanese and Byzantines are both very popular civs. Hybrid maps tend to be very aggressive on the water in early Feudal Age, so tanky Japanese Fishing Ships and deadly Byzantine Fire Ships really have the chance to shine. Japanese also have the early wood savings, but Byzantines are still really tough to dislodge. Which civ do you prefer on maps like Cross and Baltic?
    • In team games, both of these civs obviously prefer to be flank, where both are quite powerful, if not quite top-tier. Both possess fully upgraded Arbalests and powerful Halbs. Japanese have Kataparuto trebs in late game whereas Byzantines have gunpowder. Both even have strong tower options for a late game slow push. Which civ do you prefer as a flank?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Franks vs Lithuanians. Hope to see you there! :)

Challenge Idea: Going Vegan on a Water Map

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 07:41 AM PDT

I'm not someone who plays the game regularly (or good by any means), so I wanted to ask you guys how much of a challange would this add to a regular player playing against the AI (on a level that they can regullary beat)?

    So the rules are:

    • no shepherds
    • no hunters
    • no fishermen
    • no fishing ships
    • extra: no wolf killing, either run or die

Now I suppose that this isn't much of an issue on a land map. It means a sllower advance with committing more villagers to wood to get those farms up ASAP, but it becomes a normal game after a certain point.

However, on a water map wood is way more precious, and you are effectively denying yourself a loot of more efficient wood to food conversions by exclusively relying on farms instead of having some fishing ships. That with the added issue of having to spend more wood on your advance.

Also do you think there are civs that would have an extra bad time with these restrictions? And which civ bonuses effectively negate the restrictions?

Go for Champions vs Meso Civs?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:18 AM PDT

I always seem to struggle against meso Civs that go for eagles. I usually do straight archer/cav plays and establish good map control, but I always seem to lose if they last until imperial and I run into a death spiral of massed eagles. Is it worth going tech switching into Champions to deal with these?

What’s the appropriate way to deal with archers, as Malay?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:30 PM PDT

I know that you have perfectly serviceable archers yourself, with your economy; I'm more specifically talking about if it reaches imperial age, against a proper archer civ (britons/Mayans/Vietnamese). You definitely don't want any cavalry; you don't have siege ram; karambits, seem too flimsy; and while your own archers are solid, playing archers vs. archers against an archer civ seems like a losing strategy. So, what's the plan?

Does anyone else feel that walling is just the most daunting task in the game?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 03:49 AM PDT

Whenever it comes to walling I just get extremely lazy.

Going the extra mile to make sure your lumberjacks or gold villagers are positioned efficiently, taking care there is not a lonely villager on one side of the berries, garrisoning 6 villagers to shoot the boar with the tc, microing archers against mangonels. All not a problem, Im doing it without even thinking about it, but when it comes to walling of my base, or even small walling in ressources, I get super lazy, I just dont want to do it.

Frequently enough I get myself to actually start walling my base and then I see that there is like one tile unexplored so I cant drag the whole wall but have to go back to finish it and Im like "screw this, we are going to play open". I somehow would rather spend ressources to build 6 spear man to defend all my ressources from scouts than even attempt to full wall my base.

Dont get me wrong I like a fully walled base, I appreciate the safety it gives me, and I know that it can be very necessary in certain game situations, I just hate the process of getting there.

Why do I hate walling so much, is it just me or is this a general thing?

    Creating Civilization in Scenario Editor

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 11:06 PM PDT

Was thinking of making a mod but it got really confusing so I ended up "creating" the Romans by enabling Legionary/Centurion creation at castle. I used the Goths as my civilization with Italian architecture, changed the name via trigger, disabled some techs, enabled some. This is for fun but I was wondering what techs should I enable/disable if I were to create a late Roman civilization?

    Steppe Lancers

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:12 AM PDT

So you know how Steppe Lancers used to be good and now... aren't? Well, if you had the power of the devs how would you buff them?

    I would personally do:

    • -5 gold cost
    • -0.2 attack speed
    • +1 melee armour
    • +5 hp on Elite
    • +1 attack for Elite
    • Reduce Elite cost to 850 food 500 gold

So now they go from (brackets mean Fully Upgraded)

    • 60/80 hp (80/100)
    • 9/11 attack (11/15)
    • 0/1 armour (2/3,3/5)
    • 2.3 RoF
    • 1.45 speed (1.595)
    • Costs 70 food 45 gold
    • Elite: 900 food 550 gold

    To:

    • 60/85 hp (80/105)
    • 9/12 attack (11/16)
    • 1/1 (3/3,4/5)
    • 2.1 RoF
    • 1.45 speed (1.595)
    • Costs 70 food 40 gold
    • Elite: 800 food 500 food

    It has (now):

    • 56% of the hp
    • 83% of the attack
    • 66%/71% of the armour
    • Takes 19% longer to reload
    • Is 3.5% faster
    • Costs 117% food and 60% gold of a Paladin.

    My new version has:

    • 58% of the hp
    • 89% of the attack
    • 80%/71% of the armour
    • Takes 9% longer to reload
    • Is 3.5% faster
    • Costs 117% food 53% gold of a Paladin

    Notable things:

    • Mongol Elite Steppe Lancers now have 130.5 hp and has 3/3 armour (was 124 hp, 2/3 armour)
    • Tatar Elite Steppe lancers now have 5/6 armour (was 4/6)
    • Tatar ESL do a maximum of 24 attack when on top of a hill (was 22.5)
    • Cuman SL are unchanged

Now that you have seen my buffed Steppe Lancers, what are yours like?

Online players of ALLL ratings, especially low, what's your story?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 05:44 PM PDT

I've been staring at the graph on this site that shows the ratings distribution for online players and where I fall within it and it really just got me thinking about how many of us there are and at all different levels, and especially how huge the group is that's around 900 in 1v1 or 800 in team games.

I mostly only know people around my level, a bunch of try hards who wish we were good. I'm just really interested in the stories of the people from all over this graph and especially lower -- how did you get into online? How long have you been playing in general and how long online specifically? How seriously do you take it? Are you trying to get better, or just enjoying it casually? Do you play alone or with friends? Have you made friends playing online? How often do you play? What's your favorite strat, what do you struggle with?

    Tell your story!

    Multiplayer anxiety

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 03:10 PM PDT

    Hey,

Is there anyone here who also is afraid of playing multiplayer matches? I didn't play AoE2 for like 20 years, was quite competitive player in Starcraft, but now I'm a bit older, with reflexes dulled by time and lack of RTS experience and for some reason I'm afraid to play ranked games. So I'm playing the game for like a week, made medals in training scenarios and practicing on hard AI in skirmishes, but i don't feel even slightly ready for ranked games.

Any stories from other newbies? I think I need a push to give MP a shot.
