    Brainstorming a Charles V Campaign

    Posted: 24 May 2021 04:12 AM PDT

I feel like Charles V ruled at an interesting enough time that he warrants his own campaign. Given that he lived from 1500 to 1558, such a campaign would fit in the timelines of either Age of Empires 2 or 3; however, given that modern warfare at this time was still in its infancy with landsknechts & condotierro fighting alongside nascent tercio formations, it feels like Aoe2 could model such a campaign a little better.

In terms of "largest Empires," the titles held by Charles V rank up there. Holding the titles of Holy Roman Emperor, and ruling Spain and the Low Countries and the old Burgundian territories, his domain was so immense that he ultimately ended up abdicating from many titles, leading to Hapsburg Spain & Hapsburg Austria.

Conflict-wise, his realm was involved on many fronts. Starting with conquest/defense against the Kingdom of Navarre, defeating France in the Italian Wars (and the Battle of Pavia), engaging the Turks at Mohacs, and having to face the Protestant Schmalkaldic League. An ironic moment would be sacking Rome and holding the Pope hostage, thus preventing him from annulling Henry VIII's marriage and setting the stage for the Church of England to break away.

The campaign would have you play as the Burgundian civilization, mainly because the Empire used the Cross of Burgundy during that time. That said, the tech tree would also be tweaked so your civilization was pseudo-AOE3 in its design. That is, Champions renamed Doppelsoldners and given trample damage, Conquistadors renamed Mounted Arquebusiers and trained from Stables, etc.

Would such a campaign be of potential interest?

I am looking for an old aoe2 magazine advert similar to the image. The screenshot was held in a map held by gauntlets. I remember 2 walled bases sperated by a river with a crossing. Left side was western blue architeutre with a castle while right side was middle eastern green and wonder.

    Glitch where man-at-arms are invisible

    Posted: 24 May 2021 03:42 AM PDT

I am running into a consistent glitch where the militia line typically, although sometimes samurai and woad raiders, are invisible and cannot be selected. This occurs whether these units are mine or the enemies.

It's a 50/50 as to whether it'll happen in a given game. Are there any known fixes to this? It's making raiding impossible to deal with.

Steam forum and general internet searches are less revealing that I would've hoped so far. Hoping someone else has had a similar issue.

Conquering the Naked FC / Drush FC

    Posted: 24 May 2021 05:32 AM PDT

So, being a player that loves feudal aggression, I find it very frustrating when players decide to skip feudal age wars by double palisade walling / just turtling. Don't get me wrong, valid strat and I think people who think the game should be played a "certain way" are weird... after all its an RTS with game mechanics and start off points the same for all, it about how you use those mechanics.

Having said that we do all have preferences I'm sure, for unit composition, civ type etc etc. So! I wanted to find/work on a strat that I can use to counter the turtles!

Going for a 21 pop MAA into towers here.

    1) What do you guys think of the build?
    2) What civs do you think would work best? I've gone for Magyars on this one, but I'm sure Bulgarians would be good too

When doing a rush, is it enough to harass villagers to the point where they can't work or do I actually need to kill them?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 08:32 PM PDT

See, I usually have trouble with the rush strategy and countering rushes. It requires a lot of micromanaging and also it's nearly impossible to block villagers from getting back to their TC. I really struggle with the advanced technique campaign in Dedinitive Edition, while I know about things such as boar luring, I still cannot seem to master the rush.

    Today I learnt

    Posted: 24 May 2021 12:54 AM PDT

Today I learnt that it was the Magyars (not the Poles) who invented the Hussar (they were Heavy Cavalry). Hussars didn't have wings. It was the Poles who like a college students copied the Magyar Hussars and put wings on them to avoid plagiarism.

If you want to read about them, you can read here. Since AoE2 is a medieval game, I will stop at heavy cavalry. But in 1600s, these Hussars became Light Cavalry.

Spellings of various Hussars: Hungarian: huszár, Polish: huzar, Croatian: husar, Serbian Latin: Husar, Serbian Cyrillic: Хусар. The word Hussar is indeed pronounced as the Magyar word. It is a common English phenomenon with single s and double s - desert vs dessert, as vs ass, etc

New Incas can't be that bad or at least I hope since I just got wrecked on arena by them.

    Posted: 23 May 2021 05:45 PM PDT

Mostly this is to compliment my opponent. I was at my brothers and was over staying my welcome so beyond the standard gg I didn't get to pass on my compliments. I was Italians on arena and have a great 22 vill plus 2 and loom FC. In 4 of the 5 games I get all 5 relics and a middle map control castle. This guy made me pay dearly to get 3 relics and put forward siege workshop barracks and castles in my face. I was never able to expand at all. I love Incas but never thought to use them on arena. I'm just surprised and impressed by his eco and age up times while having a way better army. I got totally outplayed and love it. Now I'll look deeper into what Incas can do. AOE2 is the only time I can say thanks for kicking my ass and completely mean it

Look at the thread in official forums, it has 973 replies so far. Still no dev replied to it. It is the biggest problem in multiplayer of AoE2 currently. Would be nice if devs could respond to it.

    Light Cav spam is STRONG

    Posted: 24 May 2021 04:46 AM PDT

I recently experienced something strange; it was non-stop scout/light cav spam.

This guy sent wave after wave after wave of scouts into my base, I would simply ring the TC bell and laugh at the waste of resources, thinking I was getting ahead. As the game progressed he would upgrade to light cav and never once stop the wave of cavalry. I couldn't breathe!

He would always manage to snipe a villager or disrupt my farming that required micromanagement. His job was to constantly sacrifice his scout cav for my villagers no matter what.

Ultimately I was overwhelmed and lost the game. I was completely fascinated by how effective this tactic was. The biggest light-bulb moment for me was seeing how little the town center did to the cavalry when he had +1 armor and bloodlines.

So I decided to dabble in this strategy, and I have found it to be very powerful in lower ranked games.I've played ~30 ladder games with 87% win-rate. I've gone from the starting ~1300 mmr to 1600 mmr on doing nothing other than this strategy.

This build doesn't cut any corners economically, however it does heavily delay getting to castle-age, but that's never an issue. Sufficient harassment stops the other guy getting to castle, or if he manages to get the resources to advance, the number of light cav is so high that knights get slaughtered if he can even manage to begin building them.

1 barracks worth of spearmen is never enough to defend against this. It's easy to run around and harass somewhere else, or simply target down the spearmen if you have a 3:1 ratio of scout cav or better.

Basic guide:13 on wood, 11 on food, 1 on gold when advancing to Feudal.Build barracks mid-way through advancingUpgrade lumber CampUpgrade Wheelbarrow, then non-stop villager production and queue them to woodBuild 1 stable ASAPMake 3 scouts, harass (ideally join your initial scout with this group)Build 2nd stable, constantly have at least 1 scout in queuePurchase Bloodlines when gold allowsConstantly make farms and keep up with house production (seriously! lots of houses)Blacksmith can come fairly late, the 1 gold miner should time well with when you can get the armor upgrade.

The key to success for this strategy is to not watch your scouts attacking the whole time. ~70% of your screen time should be at your base. 30% checking up on your scouts, sending them to the other side of the base or the other lumber camp etc. to harass and try not to engage spearmen unless there's only a couple of them.

Did the enemy ring the TC bell? A lot of villagers won't be able to fit in, so happy stab away at the villagers sitting directly under the TC. The light cav can take SO MANY arrows. Sacrificing scout/light cav for villagers is always worth it.

Occasionally a player will make multiple barracks and start massing spearmen. If this happens, keep up the pressure in order to keep his units in his base while transitioning to skirmishers.

Sorry if this is a well known meta-build or something. I just wanted to share my experience with Scout/Light-Cav and I'm having very good success with it.

Tsar of the Bulgars pro tip for easy victory

    Posted: 24 May 2021 04:26 AM PDT

    1. Get Ivaylo to the boat and the rest of the troops to attack a yurt of the red (cuman) camp
    2. The vanguard lures two khans out (one near castle doesn't come out) and kills them along with several Kipchak and few knights/light cavalry
    3. Approximately 4 of your troops are left, and immediately move them to the extreme left.
    4. By this time, Ivaylo reaches the shore and joins up with the city
    5. Pause, immediately go to imperial, buy stone and create a castle near the right gate, upgrade blacksmiths techs and start spamming elite skirmisher. Keep the existing elite skirmisher to protect the castle building by attacking the mangudais (avoid attacking light cavalry) and lock the gate
    6. all the while this research and building goes on, send konniks to the boat to meet the vanguard left near red's castle. Help pikemen escort them in case red attacks the left gate
    7. with the konniks and the (hopefully) safe vanguard, attack the last purple khan from below, rush to his place and surround him. Retry in case light cavalry blocks your path or simply lure the light cavalry away with 1 konnik
    8. once he dies, red allies with you and by this time your castle is complete and imperial is reached. start upgrading the blacksmith techs and halberdier.
    9. put villagers for wood cutting and spam halbs and elite skirmisher along with cavaliers and trebuchets and take the middle path to the green camp
    10. Keep away from yellow who will attack your castle, and kill all the green troops (elite skirms will kill cavalry archers while pikemen will kill the rest, cavaliers for the occasional mangonel)
    11. immediately destroy the castle, enemy treb and gates with 4 trebs, and charge the khans.
    12. After that liesurely beat the mongols at your own pace
    13. tada!
