Devs should add castle models for all the civs and not just the new ones

Bohemian eastern architecture makes no sense

    Posted: 14 Jun 2021 03:01 AM PDT

Honestly its kinda ridiculous that Bohemians are getting Eastern architecture set just to make them feel more "eastern". Historically they were a part of the Holy Roman Empire, and their architecture evolved alongside German architecture. There arent any major differences at all between architectural developments in Germany and Czechia.

The central European set (the Teuton set) would make by far the most sense. This set is based off Romanesque architecture, which was very popular in Bohemia from 9th to 13th century. It also uses timber framing, which is very typical of medieval Bohemia. Of course nowadays Bohemia is best known for Gothic and Baroque architecture, but Baroque is out of this games timeline and Gothic is reserved for "western european" set. The eastern set is based off Rus architecture in feudal age and brick Gothic architecture in castle age, neither of which were ulitized in Bohemia at all.

Another point is the Orthodox church, Bohemia didnt even border any orthodox country, its quite ridiculous. Thats whole other can of worms though, because with the release of dukes of the east, 6 civs will use the Orthodox church, while only 2 of those civs ("Slavs" and Bulgarians) were actually Orthodox Christian.

TLDR: Bohemians need same set as Teutons

Some people were curious where the inspiration for Obuch's look came from. It's the foot soldier who slays the Teutonic Grand Master on Matejko's painting. Admittedly, he is armed with an axe, another 'national weapon'.

With the introduction of the Poles and Bohemians as new civs, Slavs should be renamed to the Rus.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 06:12 PM PDT

The Slavs Civ was initially designed to represent all Slavic peoples (including the Poles and Bohemians/Czechs, which is why some of their historical figures are AI Player Names for the Slavs) under a single blanket Civ, but this is now an irrelevant designation, as with the Dawn of the Dukes DLC there will be now three different Slavic Civs (Bulgarians, Poles, Bohemians/Czechs) distinct from them.

Renaming the Civ itself to Rus/Russians/Kievan Rus won't cause that many issues, as the vast majority of its design inspiration already comes from the medieval Kievan Rus, as indicated by the voice lines being Russian with some archaic hints, the emblem of the Civ being the symbol of the Rurikids who ruled over the Kievan Rus, the unique techs Orthodoxy and Druzhina referencing the majority religion of the Kievan Rus' and an adminstrative retinue, most of the AI Player names being Kievan Rus figures, the Boyar unique unit, etc. All of which you can see here

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_Ukraine

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Orthodox_Church (Bohemians/Czechs and Poles were historically majority Catholics)

All new Units/Buildings on the Screenshots

All new Units/Buildings on the Screenshots

    https://preview.redd.it/hn7pfesvx6571.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=3e7718791355cced1cb8a85cc4392351ca454490

Just to summarise what many people have spotted already:

    The Bohemians (top)

    - Have a mace wielding hero (probably Jan Zizka)

    - Have a unique bombard cannon upgrade the Houfnice. It seems to have a range of 12 tiles, meaning the Bohemians are potentially lacking siege engineers

    - Have the Hussite Wagon as a UU

    The Poles (bottom)

    - Have two heros (Jogaila or Vytautas the Great left, Jadwiga right)

    - Have a unique looking winged Hussar, that could be a cosmetic replacement for the Hussar, an upgrade to the Hussar or an effect by a unique tech from the castle (since it wasn't mentioned as a UU in the DLC description and the Houfnice was)

    - Have the Obuch as a UU, a POLE-hammer wielding infantry unit that " tears the armor from enemy units". Meaning either a Leitis type attack or a debuff that reduces armor (like -1/-1 per swing) or something else.

    - Have a unique building that seems to work as a food drop off point. Everything regarding this is pure speculation (since we see a ming camp in the same screenshot i doubt it is a multi drop off site)

    The Teutons (middle)

    - Have a hero unit

    - Have a cavalry unit that looks like a Paladin reskin

    (both likely scenario units)

Have you spotted anything else? :)

Wish the DLCs add some more cosmetics

    Posted: 14 Jun 2021 01:07 AM PDT

I love the idea of DLCs for the game, they add interesting civs and great campaigns (Longshanks and Dukes of the west are on my top 5 campaigns).

However I wish they would've taken an opportunity to improve and expand the game's visuals:
    1. Add weather like rain and snow- cosmetic only.
    2. Make trees and bushes more dynamic, make them sway slightly.
    3. More architecture types are always welcome.
    4. More biomes and animals- The African Kingdoms and Rise of the Rajas added beautiful new lands and animals. Definitive editions added lovely autumn maps and more animals (pigs, geese, ibex etc.).
I love using the editor to create massive cities or countryside full of small villages so I highly appreciate such additions.

Just tell yourself you're playing against the AI.

    Think things like:

"cool, the AI finally learned to wall."

"the devs must have worked really hard to get the AI this good, nice job devs"

"wow, the AI's chat function has become really realistic"

    Regarding Poles and Hussars

    Posted: 14 Jun 2021 07:55 AM PDT

Hussars were specific from some kingdoms in central Europe, it makes no sense to Khmer having Hussars, among Koreans, Indians and others, maybe they could have Hussar, but do not winged ones, so:

1 - Current unit Hussar, should be renamed to Elite light cavalry and wings removed. 2 - Magyar Huszar, should get wings removed too, and can be renamed to just Huszar, not need to be specific now.

Winged Huzar: Hussars started as light cavalry, later, Polish winged huzar became heavy cavalry, hard to guess if Polish winged huzar would be light or heavy cavalry, and they are famous by its charge in Vienna against Turks.

    Edit 1: typos.

    Balance suggestion for Cumans

    Posted: 14 Jun 2021 04:04 AM PDT

    - Huntables provide 20% more food.

I feel like Cumans are pretty good late game civ and this should address every problem that Cumans have in early age.

This would give them a good scout opening and fit with faster cavalry bonus they have.

Alternatively, their extra TC bonus would be justifiable if they have more food to pump out villager efficiently.

It makes sense from a historic point too as they were good nomadic hunters.

What's the situation with Hera and other players not getting paid from Hidden Cup?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 01:20 PM PDT

A few days ago, Hera was on stream and mentioned he still hadn't been paid his winnings from Hidden Cup and received no reason or justification for the delay - citing the unprofessionalism in the situation. He, of course, also explicitly said not to bother T90 about it, so naturally, someone went to T90's stream and asked.

    Hera stream clip

T90 initially acted like he wasn't sure what the user meant when he said, "you should pay players from Hidden Cup." When he learned Hera had said something, he changed and claimed players had been paid and that viewers shouldn't worry about behind-the-scenes stuff, indirectly blaming Microsoft.

    T90 stream clip

If Hera and other players haven't been paid for Hidden Cup, that is a serious problem that needs to be discussed.

As Hera said, the scene is too small for the players to boycott events because it's their livelihoods. Still, viewers have more power over putting pressure on organizers to do the right thing and pay participants, especially when you yourself walked away with tens of thousands of new Twitch subs and the monetary value that goes along with that.

How to best pan around the map (control groups, hotkeys, mouse?)

    Posted: 14 Jun 2021 07:04 AM PDT

I've just recently started playing AoE2, and I'm having a hard time scrolling around the map. I'm currently using my mouse at the edge of the screen, tab to go to tc, and control groups. Specially the control groups are annoying, as I have to press the number for it twice to go to it. Also, if I have my group of units across the map, add the newly produced units in, and then press the control hotkey twice, I end up somewhere in between the fight and the production...

So I have a couple of questions:

    • Is it possible to set the control group button to only click once to go there?
    • Should I use my control groups differently?
    • Are there any other ways to go around the map that I should be trying/using?

And to avoid making multiple posts at once, I have another question:

I keep hearing people talk about 1 hotkey for building a house or palisade or such. Right now, I select a villager, I press 'q' to go into the civilian building menu, then press q to select a house. Then I click to build it.

It sounds like having 1 hotkey makes you only select a villager, press the hotkey, and then click to build. I searched around in the menu, but the buildings are already on a single button press, so I don't know how I would set this up in the hotkey menu. Is this possible?

and not simply a scenario/campaign unit. I'm ultra hyped for the Poles and I feel this is a core unit for this civilization identity.

Will Pre-existing Campaigns be updated with Polish and Bohemians?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 09:00 PM PDT

The Polish are in several Campaigns (Barbarossa 2, Ivaylo 5, (original Gengis 5))

The Bohemians are in several too, (Barbarossa 1, Gengis 5)

I might be missing some, but will the civs be updated? Joan was updated with Burgundians but I don't think Bari were updated with Scicillians/normans.

How to play against fast scout openings?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2021 06:34 AM PDT

Elo about 1300 at the moment.

Fast scout openings from Franks, Mongols Lithuanians or Khmer are big trouble for me. I lose 90% against this play style.

    I know the regular advice.

Wall early if possible. Most often isn't on modern Arabia generations. Also a big investment and leads to a very passive gameplan.

Do small walls. I can't reliably rewall for overchops and such. Often there is 4+ scouts on my woodline or berries that were just seconds ago safely walled. Also, if I make a gate for new villagers to get to the woodline, often the scouts follow a vill through while I am distracted. I try to make the walls in advance, but I need a path for new vills.

Overall, it feels that if I try to follow the regular advice, I get to a position, in which I can be punished from my mistakes easier that my opponent can be punished form theirs. It's like I'm in a competing in mechanical execution instead of decision making. And I have the disadvantage of having a mobile army in my base. I usually lose at least 2 vills in feudal as a result. Add idle time into the equation and it's time to resign again.

I usually go 22pop maa into archers against these civs, if I don't have a civ to mirror the strat. Going scouts feels like doing the same thing but worse. However, I really struggle to afford anything in these situations. I should make 3 militia, spear, maa upgrade, bit axe, 1-2 ranges, blacksmith, fletching and at least 3 more spears for defense. Feels like this is impossible while quickwalling and microing. Also, I should build villagers. Also no buildorders factor in defensive spearmen. If I can't afford all these things, what should I prioritize? Is 22pop maa even a sensible choice here?

Is there any strategy choice that counters a fast scout opening? How does drush fast castle work? I haven't really honed that opening. It's not usually how I like to play. I want to learn to play every age, but that approach hasn't worked too well in this situation.
