| Win, or at least, not fail with Byzantines? Posted: 20 Jun 2021 04:23 AM PDT Hi! I would like to say "Hi, I'm new at AoE II", but to be fair, I will say: "Hi! I'm not new at Age of Empires II, I'm just really bad." I wanted to play as Byzantines because of my love for greece and cataphracts ^^ Weak reason I know. But from what I experienced... Is this civ even worth trying? In around 100 matches (team and 1v1) I encountered them one time as a deliberate choice. They are not often picked, and I think I know why. With many Civs I at least can imagine how to play them effectively - even I'm not good enough to do so. But with Byzantines? Sure, they are a defensive civ and meant so, but in a game that you can only win by being offensive... Kinda uselsee. Also, it is nice to have a defensive civ, when you don't have siege engineers and most trebuchets fire farther then your own ;-) You see my disappointment with greeks? Sure, loving Retsina, Olives, the people and the land shouldn't be a reason to play Byzantines but... I there a way to play them useful? [link] [comments] | ||||||||||||||||||||

| Posted: 20 Jun 2021 12:15 AM PDT So, a few day ago I had this stressful team game on Socotra. I was Cumans and got douched by Persians. In hindsight there's a lot of things that I could have done better, but I'm wondering if this is intended: I basically lost my one and only TC to the Persian TC + knights from the opponents. Not great, but could be worse in a team game. I had no TC and wanted to rebuild it closer to my mates...but it took forever to build. I know that's been a nerf to the Cuman feudal boom, and it's a good choice. I think it gets build ~50% slower? But that's only intended for the second TC I thought? To actually *nerf their boom". However, should it also apply if you don't have a single TC and want to rebuild? In my opinion it's not necessary at all and seems more like a bug? (Increased building time not only for second TC in feudal) So this set me even further behind and it felt way too long to build given I had no TC. Imagine playing nomad and it would take forever to build one, definitely sets you behind. Do you guys think it's a bug or was the nerf planned this way? | Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:19 PM PDT I main Portuguese (because eco is hard) and obviously post imp is where they shine, but I was vs huns and it seemed like a new guy because I took out his castles and he never used the market to buy more, or used blacksmith upgrades. It was huns so I spammed fu (no squires cause Portuguese) halberds and built bbt and a few bbc behind. It definitely went on way too long, but I didn't mind because that's what Portuguese are for! I just won my first game as byzantine, but when I watched the replay I saw how truely undeserved this victory was, for my enemy ("Speedman") only lost because he made one crucial mistake in forgetting to upgrade his pikeman, so my constant harrassing payed off. Since I saw this in the replay, the victory feels kind of undeserved and I just wanted to write this to said player or - if possible - give him the points for this match.
