    African Royals Preliminary Balance Concerns

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:43 PM PDT

So after getting my hands on the new DLC, I've been mostly enjoying the new civs, but I have a few major concerns about their balance and how overpowered/underwhelming some aspects are.

1). Javelin Riders. For the cost and population space, these units are obscene. The closest comparable units: The Ruyter and Eagle Runner Knight, don't even compare to them. For reference, a commerce age Eagle Runner Knight has about 144 HP (Javelin Riders have 210), 12 ATK (JRs have 10 and have multipliers against artillery), 6.0 speed (JRs have 6.5), and costs 75F/75G (JRs cost 65/50). At the minimum they would need to be increased to 2 population from 1, or have their stats significantly scaled down like a Ruyter, so:

    180 HP, 15 melee resist, 9 Ranged ATK w/ 1.5 ROF, 5 melee ATK w/ 1.5 ROF, 6 siege, 6.75 speed.

This would still let them be spammable, but it would keep their scaling in check (for reference, I used the same scaling that a Ruyter has compared to a Dragoons with a Javelin Rider compared to a Cavalry Archer, rounding down to the nearest major HP breakpoint, but rounding up attack to compensate).

2). Hausa Maigadi. Again, these units are obscene for their population cost. While not as spammable as the Javelin Rider, the fact that they shadowtech from 270 HP, have 20 range resist, and only take up 1 pop makes them a menace lategame, especially once you send in Dane Guns (for 100 Influence and 100 Gold). For reference, an imperial carded Janissary on TAD (with non-nerfed stats) has less ranged EHP than a carded Guard Maigadi. These units desperately need to be 2 pop (and you could maybe compensate a bit for that nerf, but it's really not needed) and Dane Guns' cost split needs to be nerfed a bit as well (say 125 Influence and 75 Gold).

3). Oromo Rider. Their gimmick flat out doesn't properly work. At base, their ranged ROF is a painful 4.0, and by the time that they get close enough to a unit to get a decent ROF, they will melee instead. As a result, I think their behavior should be changed to be like the African Emirs, who will always use their ranged attack unless explicitly tasked in melee. I also feel that their DPS is a bit underwhelming for their cost, as their base melee damage is only 2 more than a Finnish Hakkapelita, but they cost over 50% more resources and take up an additional population space. And while their ranged attack has over twice the range of Hakks, it has half the base ROF (and you want to be close to maximize DPS anyways) and doesn't deal splash damage. I feel like if they had more melee damage (say 20% more) and if their ranged behavior worked properly, they'd be much more viable units than they current are. As is stands, they're easily the worst 3 pop cav unit, being less tanky and hard hitting than a Magyar Hussar, and they lack the splash damage and tanking potential of a Gendarme.

4). Durbar Parade. Special shout out to this shipment, which is obscene. This grants Hausa melee cav (Lifidi Knights and Raiders) a 1 aoe splash attack. From digging around in the game files, it only assigned aoe and no damage cap (so legacy Aztec Warchief Smoking Mirror behavior should be familiar, but not as bad due to half the radius). But regardless, this shipment makes Hausa cav obscene in fights, as Raiders punch far beyond their pop cost, and Lifidi become mini-gendarmes. If we're going to keep splash damage, it needs to come with a significant drawback (like +1 population count to Raiders and Lifidi) or just reworked into something else like more HP/ATK (I don't believe Hausa gets a melee cav combat shipment).

5). Neftanya. This unit is mostly fine from a mathematical perspective, as they're ~16% more expensive than a Euro skirm, but have ~16% more HP. The problem is with their scaling. They have 5 different shipments that affect them, and the Jesuit Smokeless powder was stealth changed to increase their damage by a further 10%. All of this makes them punch very hard, and I think the scaling should be toned down a bit. At the minimum, I'd revert Jesuit Smokeless Powder to pre-TAR state (30% gunpowder unit siege) and remove the +0.10 siege armor granted by their age 3 shipment.

I'll probably update this post later with more testing, but those are my current concerns with unit balance. For the most part, I don't think any of the other Ethiopian/Hausa units are particularly egregious, but the new natives and outlaws do have me concerned (I need to test them more). The GME livestock market also seems quite strong (it's very easily to do a FF as Ethiopia into a disgusting timing push), so it might need some adjustments in that respect.

What are the differences between US as a main civ and revolutionary US?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:44 PM PDT

Why is the US civ so expensive compared to the new DLC? Or is it just a New Zealand problem lol

    Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:26 AM PDT

Out of curiosity, is the fact that Hausa can pick Hausa as an ally a bug, or is that intentional?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:37 PM PDT

    Good day all,

I bought and installed (10.12MB) the new Africa Expansion pack on Xbox App (Gamepass). I read that the pack comes with 2 or 3 historical mission, weirdly, the missions doesnt show up.. the skirmish map doesnt have the Africa one and the 2 new civilization either.

    Anyone had this problem ?

The United States civ unlocked through the US challenge not playable anymore since African Royals

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:10 PM PDT

    Anyone else has this problem?

I just noticed I couldn't click on my United States home city, it says I have to pay that DLC. Yet I already unlocked it through the USA challenges.

Has it been known to the devs yet?

Where can a new player find guides for the game?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:15 PM PDT

I'm not technically a new player. I've been playing for the last 8 or 9 years, but I never put much thought into the game and I never improved. Now I want to actually learn how to play properly. Are there any guides the community considers to be a bible of sorts for this game? I know this is a common thing for a lot of other small community games. If not, are there any tips you can give me?

    AoE3 without Persians?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:08 PM PDT

Hi, I'v recently installed AoE3 after a number of years playing the second. The graphics are not bad, and the maps are more beautiful and shiny. The best part begins when you enable "high poly model". The fighting style is very real and the civs differ from each other historically accurate. I like the Uhlan's uniform. It looks cool to me. I wonder how Persian civ couldn't make it into AoE3. Compared to other nations of the world in the last five centuries, Persians are historically one of the most important ones. They hired British ships and defeated Portuguese. They bought French cannons against the Russian. Ishould mention that the word "zamburak" which was given to an Indian weapon, is a Persian word meaning "little bee" refering to Egyptian mounted crossbows. During Safavid Persia as a gunpowder empire, the crossbows were replaced by light cannons(one-fourth of a cannon). These in-game Indian zamburaks are considered "toys" compared to Persian ones as one zamburak has hard time against Jannisary. In history, an army of 80000 Jannisaries with artillery, was crushed by the beginning(only front side) of the Persian army, including only 15000 zamburaks and some pieces of artilley, in minutes. I don't know if you'v recognized it or not, but the words "Spahi" and "Sepoy" that exist in Ottoman and Indian civ, are both derived from the Persian word "Sepahi" meaning "army man". I'm not saying that there is a big empty place that must be filled in this way, but adding this civilization could at least make it much more fun and somehow connect it more to AoE2.

Want to get back into the game

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:06 PM PDT

Haven't played in a while (5+ months) and want to get back into it. I'm a bit unsure of how though, it feels like a lot has changed and I'm not super inclined to slog through multiple months of patchnotes.

My main was Ottomans though I played Inca sometimes when I wanted to play a more chill game with friends.

I'm sure there have been some substantial changes since I last played so I dont expect any quick summary. Maybe if someone knows a good youtube channel or something that could help me sumarize?
