Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:33 AM PDT The difference in the units in castle age isn't massive, and I can easily, even after losing feudal age, have 3 archery ranges built and ready to start churning out CA the second I hit Castle age. With a faster castle age time, 8 CA with bodkin at your woodline before your new tech has come in is an opportunity too good to be missed. The key to any cavalry archer unit is numbers. There's no way I can have 2 castles up immediately after hitting Castle without tanking the economy necessary to keep up producing at the same rate. Gold Efficiency and Unit Sustainability. Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:29 AM PDT There seems to be a lot of old wives' tales regarding which units are "expensive" especially as they pertain to gold, which civs can and can't do double gold compositions, etc. I remember seeing claims like:
So I figured I'd make a table to start investigating at least which units are actually gold expensive and which just seem that way on paper. Hopefully it helps some people clarify their own thinking. Feel free to comment on what was surprising, might be wrong, etc. Below is a table with gold costs for AoE2 units sorted by % gold, lower % gold is better for sustainability. These % gold are measured by taking villager second ratios (Time spend mining gold)/(Time spent obtaining all resources) which affects things a lot. It assumes wood is gathered at 30/min, food at 20/min, gold at 27/min. The absolute numbers here don't matter just the ratios. The farming number is derived from my Saracen market post where I calculated the real farming rate taking into account the cost of the farm. Wood rate is from This post. Villager time is basically the only meaningful way to look at % Gold IMO. It determines what % of your villagers need to be on gold which means, assuming the number of villagers devoted to military unit production are the same, that it's directly proportional to gold extraction rate. After all it's not like you're counting units as you produce them and spending a fixed amount of gold, you're trying to minimize resource float while you produce a unit. Portuguese numbers are about 0.9x what is displayed on average (though it differs from unit to unit). You can also think of it this way: You literally can't spend gold on a unit if you don't have the other resources. Thus the fastest you can spend gold on a unit is by matching villager ratios to the cost ratios. E.g. while Hand Cannons cost 5 more gold, you can't spend the gold without the 45 food and it takes longer to get than 25 wood. Anyway here's the table:
In order to see how "sustainable" a unit is relative to another unit just divide one by the other. E.g. The Knight-line is a 48.1% gold line and the archer line is a 66.7% gold. This means archers are ~39% more expensive in terms of gold than knights, or knights are ~28% less expensive than archers in terms of gold. Don't interpret this 39% as being able to make knights for 39% longer because economy growth really messes with that metric. Instead view it as being able to spend 39% more villager-time on knights over the game or that knights consume gold at 72% the rate of archers. Now differences in upgrade costs can affect certain things but that will have to wait until a different time. Sometimes this is really significant like with scorpions but for many units the difference is only a few hundred gold which, while it affects the ratios noticeably, the approximate point being made still stands for many units. Just keep this in mind I suppose. In terms of translating this to combat gold efficiency (CGE) the following formula is for the simple 1 unit vs 1 unit case:
This tells you the % more of gold that was lost by unit A compared to unit B in the fight (assuming equal villager seconds spent on production). For example, no supplies militia will consume gold slower but will have fewer numbers, lead to more dead units, and likely lead to an overall increased gold cost even if "on paper" they have a lower gold consumption. The opposite occurs with something like Portuguese monks, you will have 25% more monks which means you can convert more leading to a better outcome even if on paper you still consume at the same rate because its a 100% gold unit. So this is something to be aware of. Some Unit notes/analysis:
I fully expect some comments about mid-game food costs making many of these gold efficiencies only look good on paper. Especially for infantry. This might be valid, after all supplies was a huge buff and longswords are still pretty niche. But it still needs to be considered in how it can affect strategy choices. Anyway hopefully this table can help people with making tough intertemporal decisions like whether to build double gold compositions, build an early castle for cheaper UUs, mixing units to lower gold costs, etc. As a last note the % gold's value in decision making is predicated on total costs being balanced. It doesn't do much good to have a list of gold efficiencies when the unit's total cost (in villager seconds) might be greatly overpriced. But assuming the developers have gotten reasonably close to the right numbers the table should still help with intertemporal decisions. Give Flemish Militia Spearman Armor Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:35 AM PDT Just about every archery range unit and ranged UU has a bonus against spearmen. Arbs get +3. CA with parthian tactics have +6. Most UU have +2. The biggest benefit would be skirms who have +3. Right now no trash unit counters Flemish Militia. Having a cheap easy to mass counter could substantially nerf Flemish Revolution. It seems unlikely to me that the devs will remove this tech so another cost increase along with the spearman armor should be a step in the right direction. Why doesn't Parthian Tactics effect Arambai? Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:43 PM PDT This game has a fairly complex of armor types and bonus damage against a certain armor class. Like the conquistador the arambai have several armor types including both cavalry and cavalry archer. The game developers decided to prioritize cav archer armor so both units benefit from the archer armor blacksmith upgrades. But not the attack and range upgrades. This makes sense as they aren't using bows. Now Parthian Tactics does give extra attack vs pikemen (+4 regular cav archers, +2 UU cav archers) but it's primary affect is its extra +1/2 armor. Parthian Tactics historically was a battle tactic, a way of false retreats, ambushes, and firing while riding away. It has nothing to do with a bow and arrow weapon system specifically. Burmese already get Parthian Tactics and could use a buff. I don't want to see their xbows or skirms buffed so this would be a good solution. Devs could consider the same for conqs and mamalukes. Both Spanish and Saracens could use help. The problem is Spanish don't get Parthian Tactics. And Saracens do have PA but mamalukes benefit from cavalry blacksmith upgrades. So it's more complicated with those 2 civs. But for Burmese and arambai I feel it's almost a bug that Parthian Tactics doesn't already work on arambi [link] [comments] |
