The Poles' stone->gold mining bonus is one of the strongest eco bonuses this game has ever seen.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 04:11 AM PDT

When I first saw the bonus I thought it would be an insignificant amount of gold similar to the Burgundians' farming gold bonus but even with just three stone miners you get a nice trickle of gold in feudal age.

The civ will be top tier along with chinese in a few weeks when people see how strong it is. This bonus, along with the extra food you get from the supermills, is absolutely bananas.

If you're playing vs poles on arabia and their stone is somewhat exposed you should consider tower rushing them there.

Does anyone keep getting random disconnection and matchmaking failures in team game?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 05:19 AM PDT

I keep getting random disconnection pop-up and queue drop after a match has been found. I notice that usually happens when there is a Pole civ or Bohemian civ picked by someone on the team.

Does anyone else get something similar to this?

Worst of all, this would persist until I restart the game. Not great.

Are Sicilians now too oppressive against archer civs ?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 05:06 AM PDT

    With the introduction of Hauberk (+1 / + 2 armor to cav) Sicilian Cavaliers now get total armor of 2 + 4 / 2 + 6.

With 8 PA they now only take 2 damage from FU Arbalester (compared to 3 damage that FU Paladins take). This means it takes an Arbalester 70 shots to bring down a Sicilian Cavalier compared to 60 shots to bring down a Paladin (bear in mind that the Sicilian UT costs 500F 400G compared to Paladins 1300F, 750G).

The kicker though is that the Sicilian Cavalier also gets the 50% anti bonus damage benefit meaning your standard FU Halberdier takes 7 hits to bring down a Sicilian Cavalier vs 5 for a regular FU Paladin. This is to say the Sicilian Cavalier is better than Paladins against archers and pikes whilst being significantly cheaper to tech into. To the best of my knowledge mass Halb spam is the only thing that is cost effective against Cavalier but then the Sicilians also have access to the Serjeant which is an epic trash killer (with the halb taking 29 hits to bring down a Serjeant).

In the last 2 games I've played between Sicilians vs archer civs (me as Sicilians in 1 and against them in the other) this appears to be pretty OP though, I admit we probably need to wait for actual win rates before we can conclude anything meaningfully.

Great AI Update, One Major Issue

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 06:26 PM PDT

I love the new update. Wanted to try out some new opening with the new Civs and Cuman changes and was surprised with a scout rush. Feels good.

But then I checked the map after I practiced my opening and realized AIs build lumber camps on straggler trees now.

May be we can get this well known and get this fixed asap. Wouldn't want to ruin the awesome AI updates that's been coming out.

    Thank you devs.

Were Sicilians ever OP (even at release)?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 05:52 AM PDT

I thought Sicilians have always (even when released) been considered a weak civ based on:

    1. the lack of any early eco bonus And
    2. The lack of a good late game military comp

They've always been a low winrate civ. Has this narrative changed with the new DLC?

Note: I'm a below average elo who just enjoys playing as Sicilians, even tho they aren't considered great.

Edit: I understand that now they might be with the new imp tech, as u/coolios9876 posted just before my post.

Can we please have something done about the siege tower?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 06:52 PM PDT

Needless to say more. It is useless. Just:

    1. Lower the overall cost to something like 160w 75g (ram cost - it would still be useless in most cases but could be used in some wacky strats)

    2. Lower the gold cost to 60g. (So it could be a lower cost arrow soaking ram)

    3. Have some other feature (I don't know - slowly but consistently diminishes hp on stone building if garrisoned?)

Just to clarify, I'm not asking to siege towers be used competitively. Just to have some usefulness when having a casual game.

    Other ideas?

What if the Saracens were given a new UT to replace Madrasah? What would you have it do?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 04:24 PM PDT

Madrasah refunds 33% of a Monk's cost when it dies. While that's decent, it feels more like it'd be better as a civ bonus than a UT. You wouldn't go out of your way to build a Castle if you're trying to do a CA Monk rush (though you might get it in IA), and since it only pays for itself by you losing Monks, it's got a "feels bad" element to it. It only works if you're losing, which is never a good position to be in.

I feel the Saracens could benefit from a different CA UT, but what would you have it be? Maybe something like "Mamelukes cost X less gold"? You rarely see Mamelukes in both 1v1's and TGs because Camels are often the better choice (tougher, better damage, cheaper, requires less micro, less vulnerable to bonus damage).

How to (not) micro the Hussite wagon.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 12:17 PM PDT

This post will go over some mechanics/quirks of how the Hussite wagon fires. It first shoots a main cannon ball which deals 17/20 damage. After this it fires 3 more bullets that deal 2 damage each. These extra bullets can be fired in a single volley, or as two volleys of 2+1 bullets or as three separate shots. It appears to me that it is random which way it shoots for each barrage. These shots are separated by 0.93 seconds. After the last volley is fired, it has a rest period of 2.5 seconds. So depending on how many volleys are fired, the time between main cannon shots can be 4.36, 5.2 or 6.13 seconds.

Further because of the way units with multiple projectiles behave in game, if you give a command to the hussite wagon when it has not finished shooting its secondary bullets completely, then the next time it gets to attack, it will only fire the remaining bullets from the previous attack. So this attack will not have the main cannon ball. In fact you don't have to be the person to interrupt. If the target dies before all secondary shots are fired, same thing happens and the next attack will be a dud.

So what does this tell us about microing it? In order to get maximum dps out of the unit, you would have to leave still so that it shoots all of its bullets. This can be as long as 3.73 seconds in the worst case. Next they have a tendency to go out of sync with each other. Some will go through all attacks faster than others. So controlling them as a group will also mess up their dps. Finally, if you focus fire a unit with your army, that unit will probably die in the cannon ball volley. But then all you Hussite wagons will be firing duds in the next attack. So most methods of micro work counter-intuitively and reduce their dps. Micro with them should be more defence focussed like dodging mangonel shots.

TLDR; How to micro them? Don't.

Markets work 80% faster - a case study

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 06:06 PM PDT

First and foremost, what is the working rate of a building? Well, since it depends on the unit or research being produced, we must calculate it individually. So, for instance, let's look at the market: according to the wiki, it takes 51 seconds to train a trade cart. That means the rate at which the market trains new carts is 1/51 (1 cart per 51 seconds). So, applying the Bohemian team bonus on top of it, we get 1.8 times 1/51, that is, 1.8/51. dividing both the numerator and the denominator by 1.8 we get to 1/28.33. That is, 1 cart per roughly 28 seconds.

Ergo, a 80% faster work rate for markets means that the training time of trade carts is reduced from 51 seconds to ~28 seconds.

Edit: I added a graph - https://www.desmos.com/calculator/fnnznj9coj?lang=en-us - you can choose the starting training time with the variable z

Casting the Syacup 2020, a $4000 4v4 Japanese Tournament today at 09:00 GMT!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:46 PM PDT

    Morning, y'all!

Komtan is hosting the Syacup 2020, a 4v4 tournament for the Japanese AoE community. The prize pool is nearing a whopping $4000, all of which came from donations.

While there are quite a few Japanese players who will cast the games in Japanese, there weren't any English streamers. After speaking with Komtan, he encouraged me to cast the games in English! The tournament will start around 09:00 GMT today (August 14). I hope some of you can join in and watch seven teams in the Japanese community go at it.

Each team will play one another on Arabia across 7 rounds. Each round has a 60-minute time limit, meaning score victories are possible. At the end of the 7 rounds the two most successful teams will battle it out for a winner-takes-all match.

I'll cast the matches in English at https://www.twitch.tv/frosty_janissary

Hope you can make it! よろしく!

Hey there guys, the new Jungle Summer Event tab isn't coming for me today (I played it only yesterday) My event manager is also empty. Has anyone else have had this experience? Does anyone know the fix?

    I want to clarify something

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 01:26 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

I want to talk about something that makes me really curious..

While we were playing on Voobly, other player's internet connection was important for the game. Because if someone has a bad connection, that affects other players too.. But computer power wasn't that important, right? I mean if their computer can't run aoe2 with a very good performance, that wouldn't be a problem to other players. (And yes aoe2 was a really easy to run game.. but i guess really really old computers can't run it properly.)

Anyway now let's compare it to DE.. when we play multiplayer here, other player's computer performance is also important for us, right? Because I saw that some people is saying "Please only with good computers should join the 4v4 partys" It means if my computer can't handle the big game, it affects other players (i guess..) And also what about internet connection.. when we have a bad connection it ruins our game (stopping and after that fastly reaching the real time). Does this situation affect other players too?

Bohemians get Redemption. So if you're out of gold and are having issues taking your opponents base down fast enough, just make them monks and convert the whole town! :D

Also gives you forward production buildings to use as well. :)
