From Sub 700 to over 1000 ELO: How I Became An Average AoE3 Player

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 11:46 AM PDT

So when I first started on the ranked ladder I was getting my teeth kicked in and fell just below 700 ELO. I made it a goal to make it back to 1000 and last night I finally climbed my way to 1007 and it wasn't that easy. I see a lot of people asking questions and having discussions regarding lower ELO play so I wanted to post some general points that helped me get 300 points and a 55% win rate.

    1. Pick a Civilization- Probably the first thing to do is have a main and try your best to stick with it until you know a few build orders and their adaptability. I can't tell you how many times I have lost a couple of games and switched civs out of frustration just to lost a few more games. For me, I climbed with the United States but everyone is different. Learn other civs in skirmish until you're ready to bring them into ranked when you're comfortable.
    2. Blame Yourself- The great thing about 1v1 is that you really don't have too much else to blame but yourself for your loss in most cases. Go ahead and record your games and really think about what you could have done differently. Sure its frustrating but thinking about adaptability in your civilization to various strategies is important. Play on easy to make sure you get proper timings then up the difficulty to add pressure.
    3. One Trick Ponies are Dead Ponies- A lot of times people will master a specific build order with a specific unit composition and use that in every game. Its important to anticipate when to switch your unit compositions depending on your opponent, or even better, anticipate what they would be making so you can counter. The same with build orders in which you need to build multiple decks with variances to make sure you can switch up your build order in case your opponent does something unexpected such as if they turtle so you have to FI or maybe they rush and you have to then Semi-FF. Just don't get stuck.
    4. Macroeconomics- Basic things such as producing villagers, balancing resource production, herding, treasure hunting, and saving villager seconds are all things that can be practiced on and should be emphasized in your game play. A good measure is looking in your post-game and seeing the chart for idle villagers and villager count. Learning your hotkeys will help immensely in this regards as well as in the micro of combat such as a switching stances.
    5. Cheat at Cards- I find that a lot of people don't really look at their opponents decks in game even though this is important to getting an idea of what they may be going for and what counters they have. Of course its not always the case but it helps. This goes along with having a good idea of each civilization; their standard strategies, what their cards do, and their unique units and buildings. But nothing can really replace good scouting in-game to know exactly whats happening.
    6. Listen to Aussie Drongo, But Also Don't- I am a big fan of Aussie, FitzBro, and Widgie. Love the content. But remember that a single game on a YouTube video is not a good data set to prove a strategy. We also have to remember that the level of play is significantly higher in a lot of those games as well, so take everything with a grain of salt. They can be a good source of learning build orders and seeing good mechanics on display to emulate but it doesn't mean you should jump into ranked at 800 elo and expect to replicate similar results.

There are other things like: learn to use the hotkeys, don't be afraid to build on water, don't overextend your fights, know your unit counters etc...but the key thing is have fun. Be kind and encouraging to people online and just keep working at it. At the end of the day its a game to be enjoyed by all of us. Good luck and I hope it helps!

Are we overdue for a new asian civ?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 08:37 AM PDT

Let's just entertain for a moment the idea that we have had a new native civ, new American civ, new euro civ, and 2 new African civs, but have yet to see a new asian civilization in DE. "Asian" being loosely defined as being based in continental or Asia pacific, aging up with wonders, and having access to rice paddies and export resource, etc. Even if you would prefer a civ from another region, which "asian civ" would you most like to see or seems most likely to you?

I don't see the event challenges in game

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 11:47 AM PDT

New update comes with a limited time event with challenges to unlock stuff. But I don't see them in the game. Usually they are displayed in the main screen right? I even have both of the DLCs.

    Anyone else having this issue?

EDIT: It appeared after a restart

TEAM 1 Castle doesn't actually send castle to teammates?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 07:42 AM PDT

I tested this card today as Japan, with a Sweden teammate.

When i sent this card, instead of getting a castle rickshaw,he got an outpost wagon.

Is this intended or a bug?

Looking for aoe3 coach with perhaps payment

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 12:43 PM PDT

Hi Thank you for reading my post. I am currently looking for a high skilled coach who can help me filter out my flaws in my gameplay. I am looking for someone who can help me figure out certain advantages within matchups in 1v1 and macroing and countering.

I currently am PR 23/25 In TAD which is not terrible but I find myself struggling to get to the next level.

I am learning to use unit groups but I can not find the use of them in certain situations or to punish certain civilization. In theory I know what can be done but I lose my focus sometimes. And then I get frustrated because I feel unjustified of how bad I played because I know I could play better.

My goal is to become an intermediate player with a solid understanding of the game.

My civilization matchup : British , Portugal , French arey main civs.

For example I struggle with India and Japan for the same reason of what their strengths are

    Let me know
