Comparing AOE4 to AOE3 is pointless because AOE4 is a successor to AOE2.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2021 01:09 AM PDT

If you mainly play AOE3 instead of AOE2 and participated in the open beta or saw the gameplay videos, you might feel like the AOE4 graphics is a huge step down because it's not as realistic. I felt that way at first glance. However keep in mind that AOE4 is not meant to impress die-hard AOE3 veterans.

From a marketing standpoint, AOE4's long-term goal is to gradually convert AOE2 veterans while drawing in a younger generation of RTS gamers. The "cartoonish" animation style is meant to help achieve this. The graphics engine that powers AOE4 does not require new and high end GPUs to achieve decent FPS; on the contrary, mid-range GPUs from three generations ago could still achieve great FPS with high settings on 1080p; RX-580 for example. This means that the new generation of young gamers that want to get started in RTS could enjoy the latest Age of Empires title even if they don't have the latest and greatest gaming rig. Current AOE2 players could easily migrate to AOE4 because the GPU requirement is not a huge factor.

The price point of $60 could also prove to be very lucrative. AOE4 may look like a completely new game that was built from scratch, but that's not entirely true. AOE4 was built based on the successful gameplay mechanics and reputation of AOE2. Same four resources, same time period, etc. We will most likely also see many of same civilizations added over time.

As for our beloved AOE3, I believe that it will still be maintained by the developers at least until the end of 2022. IMO, based on graphics alone, AOE3 is one of the best RTS titles in the current landscape. There are plenty of bugs to iron out and civilization balance could be better, but the unique gameplay mechanics and nearly endless learning curve from 19 different civilizations makes it an awesome game for only $20. There are whispers of new civilizations in the future, but who knows, maybe they'll arrive in AOE5. 🙃

    Edit: Grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Be honest guys do you think aoe 4 is let down.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 11:11 PM PDT

Been playing aoe 4 for sometime. And this honestly feels a stepdown from aoe 3 de. This is coming from a person who liked aoe 2 more than aoe 3. I have always felt aoe 3 was less balanced and the card progression system didnt make sense. There were too many variables than solid core gameplays. Pathing was very clunky and back then I did not have the pc to play it at full graphics and enjoy its awesome graphics. That being said its amaizing how almost 99 percent of the issues that plagued the original aoe 3 was fixed in the de version. Sure DE was a trainwreck at launch but now i would say its the best version of age of empires out there. I like it way more than aoe 2 de. Its way more dynamic and fast paced. And the asymetric civs are asymetric within their own build orders. When they previewd aoe 4 in 2020 i thought this game is going to be healthy combination between aoe 3 and aoe 2. Keep the already sucessful aoe 2 as a base and just add aoe 3 improvements on top. But now it feels like they did a u turn and went back to 1998.

No batch training- why the hell. This was one of my favourite features of aoe 3.

No mercenary/map specific units. This is a minor complaint but map specific units and natives makes the map feel more real. The map feels like world in itself. That you are their to explore. Same thing goes for treassures but i do understand why they were scrapped. Now the maps are exactly the same as aoe 2 just with slightly better graphics.

Not enough unit variety . Though its more than aoe 2. But its nowhere near aoe 3.

Less detail. From animations to graphics everything seems to lack detail. Even aoe 3 asian dynasties look more detailed than aoe 4. The graphics are not cartoony, its just that they lack detail. Im not expecting it too be as detailed as aoe 3 de. But god damn the units look plain.

And lastly. Self driving siege weapons.

Future Middle East content hinted on the Camel Caravan historical notes.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 03:01 PM PDT

"Caravans are neutral units that traverse the land trade routes of Africa and Middle East.."

That means that we will probably get the Arabia map, and very less probably, an Middle East DLC with Persians.

BTW, my bet for the new civilization to be released is Morocco, probably before the release of AoE 4, with the remaining African maps (Araby, Congo Basin, Lake Victoria, Saharan Routes and Siwa Oasis)

Sign-ups for the ESOC Challengers League

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 09:29 PM PDT

Hey folks! I wanted to post here because I'll be hosting a particularly exciting event over on ESOC that should involve a lot of mid-level and up-and-coming players and I wanted to make sure that everyone who can participate gets the opportunity to consider doing so.

ESOC will be hosting the introductory season of the ESOC Challengers League, which will be a Premier League style event where players are drafted in a live auction and then compete together on teams in a round robin stage, with the top two teams qualifying for Playoffs.

We've hosted three iterations of the ESOC Premier League (EPL) by now, which has been an event reserved for the absolute cream-of-the-crop competitive AoE3 players. What's interesting about the Challengers League is that it'll be a secondary league to the EPL, so players who normally wouldn't see shine but are on the cusp of greatness will get the chance to prove their worth. If that sounds like something for you, I'd highly recommend following the above link to find out more (or asking questions here, I'll be around to answer) and considering signing up. Sign-ups are open from now until Saturday, September 25th, and the live team auction will take place this Sunday, September 26th.

In any case, the event (as well as the EPL) will be ongoing throughout the rest of September and most of October and finish just before the release of AoE4. Check out eso-community.net to keep up on what's happening and be sure to follow twitch.tv/esoctv to catch all of the live games!

    The value ratio between resources.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 08:01 PM PDT

The value ratio is Food : Wood : Coin : Influence : Export=1:1:1:1:~0.7

Those units with equal xp bounty have equal total resource cost, and are (almost) equally effective individually (Ashigaru-Sepoy, Aenna-Cetan,...). The ratio between export : xp bounty range from 6.6 to 7.3, while other resources : xp bounty is fixed 10.0.

In my perspective, this only apply for mid-late game, when you have to rely on mill/plantation. In early game, huntables make food way cheaper than wood and coin.

Export and Influence are cheaper as the game go on.

Which culture do you think is gonna be the new one added in update patch #43871?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 04:30 AM PDT

Something was mis-macro'ed if the end game resource pile looks like this - a wise man once said to fix macro before a big fight is about to happen - e.g. use the wood to build a couple of farms/mills so that you'll have enough food to retrain lost units right away

How can I edit a standard map?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 08:27 AM PDT

I would like to take a map from the African DLC and edit the geography a bit for a private game with friends. I understand the map isn't one static map but has RNG built in, but surely I could take one save file of it and edit that as a scenario? I can't see how to do it

Edit: my aim is to play 3 players v 4 AI, but on a custom map.
