Age of Empires II not again

    not again

After ~1.3k games and a LOT of introspection, I have cracked 1600 elo for the first time. :)

How come Jaguar Warriors aren't a bit faster? Don't really live up to their name

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 02:39 PM PST

I feel like even .05 more speed would make them feel a lot better. Wouldn't be as fast as Eagle Scouts but would at least be faster than Pikemen

So this just happened. I am the red player. I lost.

Challenge: give each civ one tech that won't make them much better or much worse.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:56 PM PST

I'll start: Celts with Bracer. Celts already miss Arbalester and Ring Archer Armor so it wouldn't make their archers OP, and this doesn't fix their janky cavalry (only Paladin civ without both Bloodlines and Plate Barding Armor). This would also make their Castle Age UT less weird; they already get a Keep but they don't get Architecture either.

    Arena castle drop advice

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 11:04 PM PST

    The recording is here: https://aoe.ms/replay/?gameId=140813169&profileId=263590

    Game at ~1370 elo.

I got arena and went for Vietnamese + random. Opponent picked Cumans.

I decide to go for a 26 pop FC with blacksmith and archery range into castle drop then fast imp. The castle can't be denied, I stone wall the opponent's exterior stone, get all the relics, click up to imp with 40 villagers without too much TC idling.

I have had people try to deal with castle drops with rams before, but I forgot about capped rams. Right as I hit imp the opponent comes out with 4 capped rams and probably 25 upgraded steppe lancers. Castle down and gg. I knew about his stables from about 5 minutes before and had started to add pikes but maybe now that I think about it I maybe should have added in a bunch of monks.

Now this opponent has been nearly 1700 so he's obviously a step above what I usually face but I still feel I made mistakes.

Would appreciate any advice on how this could have gone better.

    Optimal trade cart questions

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 07:05 PM PST

When is it worth it to build markets farther apart from your ally? Sure you get more gold per trip, but you also make less trips per minute. Also more travel time for the vils to go build it. Obviously too short would cause crowding and slow trade, but why not just build at the far side of your base so your vils aren't wasting time walking? Or build to make sure there's a straight path for the carts.

Has anyone tested whether it's actually worth it to build in the "corners" on a given map? If so is it worth it only with the faster trade cart upgrade or regardless? Is it worth it if the trade carts aren't going in a straight line, but turning around forests/obstacles?

Grid Hotkeys Suggestion: Tab for More Buildings

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:40 PM PST

Quick offering of a hotkey change that I've found super nice: if using the grid hotkeys layout (default in DE), try changing the hotkey for "More Buildings" under "Villager Build" to Tab. This is referencing that red arrow that jumps between civilian vs military buildings - I've always found the default hotkey of V to be just enough out of place to confuse me when I accidentally hit q vs w to start and am in the wrong build menu in the heat of the moment. Hitting esc to go back also works here, but I've found that Tab just works great and feels intuitive, it's like tabbing around fields in a form. I know many folks use tab for idle vil, personally I have that moved to tilde (way upper left).

Of course personal preference varies so this won't please everyone or even most, but I know other people also struggle with that half-second of confusion when you fly into the wrong build menu and see mining camps when you want stables so you look at the red arrow and start counting how many spaces over it is but it's taking too long so you move the mouse all the way down to the red arrow and meanwhile that poor group of archers across the map is being slaughtered.

PS: the same hotkey also works for the ship build menu at the dock for spamming fire ships. Oddly there isn't a different one under the Dock menu

Whats wrong with boar luring vills

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 12:29 PM PST

It feels like I always need to keep an eye in them. I task them to walk across the TC. And fix a few wood vills or something, I look back to check on boar vill, stopped mid way and started shooting the boar and dies. It really annoying to lose a vill like that.

How do you define your game plan?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 05:01 PM PST

What the title says. If it helps, think of it as how do you decide what to do at the very start of the game while playing Arabia or Arena. What I mean is the general plan of the game, what you want to do at a macro level. An example would be why and when you decide to do a pre-mill drush instead of maa/scouts opening. Try no to be specific of a given civ matchup, but rather as a general one (against a cav civ, aggressive, defensive civ, etc..).

I find that I struggle to follow a given plan because I never think of one at the start 11

Posted about this earlier, now confirmed that ranked multiplayer is seeding me into a banned map

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 12:58 PM PST

I just finished an Arena game, immediately checked my queue afterwards and confirmed that Arena is still banned.

Anyone else experiencing this? I really dislike Arena and would like my bans to work.

Radeon 6700 XT has a problem with the game

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 03:30 PM PST

It's my graphics card, and there's no fix to it. The game will stutter and lag, in all conditions, making it almost unplayable. It's really frustrating that a GPU costing upwards of $1k could just be incompatible with a game like this.

Campaign Genocide Brainstorming #1 Dracula #4 Moon Rises

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 09:30 AM PST

Brothers, sisters, comrades in arms of r/aoe2. I need help because I am about to face the first true monster of the run. (Alaric has been finished without any issues with the notable exception of the second mission and Dracula has been fine... until now.)

Dracula defense mission. I can't build any real siege weapons. Or even Petards. Stopping enemy production in an hour seems nigh impossible. Not to mention I seriously hate Ottoman voice acting. (JK, that's not relevant, but it does genuinely annoy me.)

Honestly, I am not even sure if much better players than I am can do it. Slavs don't have Heresy so, there might be a chance to convert some of Radu's Siege Rams.

I might need to write down the timings of Akinci Cavalry.

    Any other ideas?

    Herdables food generating bonus

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:29 PM PST

In Jan Zizka 1 and the early stage Honfoglalas, we can send sheeps and cows to a fenced area and generate food, done via a trigger.

Imagine having this mechanic to be a global feature or a bonus for a new civ, where you store the sheep near a mill or TC and generate food.

Is there a way to download replays from aoe2.net without knowing who won?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:18 AM PST

I like to watch games using capture age. I've discovered that downloading and watching completed games lets capture age run much smoother, especially for 3v3 or 4v4. Is there a way to browse old replays without seeing which team won?

Why don’t we see more Hand Cannons on the ladder?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:09 AM PST

20 years ago I'd smashed the AI with all the Hand Cannons because guns are guns.

On the ladder I rarely see them. Occasionally you see Turks Janissary on Nomad type maps and certainly on closed maps but never any where else.

They are absent in the open map 1v1 games I play. Is anyone using them? How do you make them useful?
