No option to join friends games in Multiplayer

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 05:03 AM PST

Ok so I think my game might be a bit broken. So when I go into Multiplayer I have no option to search for friends lobbies, and they don't show up when scrolling manually. If I try to join them through an invite I just get an "Unknown Error" and it doesn't work, if they try to join me they're told to install some mod but get booted back to the main menu. So, is this a common bug or am I truly in shit?

All of a sudden everything is stretched out and resources are not clumped. Is there a fix?

How to fix goth for 1v1 and high level games without boosting their newcomer cheese.

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 07:11 AM PST

Make drush or M@A opening cheaper. That is the pro 1v1 meta, and currently Goths get no benefit making militia before reaching feudal, at which point you'd rather queue M@A upgrade with the units already out. At lower level where the spam is very powerful, people do not drush.

Option 1, drush buff: 17-20% cheaper militia in dark age

Should be less than 33% because Hoang rush could be too powerful; Very early barracks to flooding enemy eco with militia.

Option 2, M@A buff: 33% discount from the moment you click feudal.

Currently goths get no bonus unless they keep adding M@A after initial 3. This would make them more predictable though.

Ps. Sorry for making another Goths thread.

An update on Linux playability (fix for black box units)

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 04:47 AM PST

Hello, these are my settings in Lutris: https://i.imgur.com/kMgc3KV.png

    Things that work:

    • Movies (art of war, campaigns)

    • Multiplayer (no longer desyncs into the game)

    • Mods if installed from the website

    Things that do not work:

    • Sometimes it crashes, but this is fairly rare

    • I can list the mods but the game will crash while loading mod info still

    • When starting a game all the units and buildings are black boxes (fixable!)

    FIX:

You can predict if the last bug is going to occur based on the FPS of the sparks in the main menu. If the FPS is low, then the bug is occurring. If unsure, start a single player game and check.

When this happens: Quit the game, go to your system manager and search for "steam", kill ALL processes which are listed (this should include AoE2DE.exe).

Restart the game from Lutris (you must NOT exit Lutris beforehand). This should fix it within 5 tries.

Hey guys, my latest custom scenario is out now via the in-game Mod Manager or here.

It's a pretty unique scenario re-made from scratch for DE (with new gameplay!). If you're a Japanophile, love poetry, or just want to experience something entirely different in Age of Empires, check out this poetic adventure!

    Haiku of the Ronin
Disgrace is a kimono unstained with blood. Disgrace is a dry tanto blade. Disgrace is a ronin. Journey with a masterless samurai as he seeks a daimyo during the height of Edo Japan. Discover kireji to write seven haiku. These seven poems will tell the Ronin's story. A vivid puzzle scenario, remade for the Definitive Edition.

    Features:

    • A unique poetic adventure with a branching story-line and different endings
    • Your actions and decisions inspire kireji to write your own haiku
    • Featuring a collection of traditional Japanese poetry and new works by the scenario author

Had my first game in DE, AI suicided every villager!?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 07:22 AM PST

It was a moderate AI (not HD or CD)

It sent every villager to build walls and got shot by my castle.

I dont think even the HD AI did this stuff.

    Question about the performance test

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:50 AM PST

I got a score of 1283 [same every time I ran it] but there's something that to me seems wrong.

My pc is an ok one - I have a ryzen 2700x at a stable/constant 4.1Ghz oc and a 2070Super that runs at 2100Mhz in games. Also 16Gb of ddr4 at 3400. It seemed that just 283 above the minimum of 1000 is very low for a game like this so I went and checked the fps and frametimes during the test using rtss and it turns out the game was sort of capped at 59 fps. While playing I have I think 120.

So is this normal or is it a glitch?

    Goth Tweaks and Updates

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 11:35 AM PST

Goths have been left behind as the game has progressed. When they were first made, boar luring wasn't an intended tactic, there was no Supplies or Arson techs, and their infantry had far fewer hard counters. They can still be powerful in the lategame, but they have no means to actually get there. They could really use some updates to bring them up to modern par.

To Sum Up, Goths have 2 major problems.

    1. Infantry used to be bad for 90% of civs, and acceptable for Goths. Contrast this with Cavalry, which prior to the existence of Bloodlines was overpowered for Franks and still decent for everyone else. But now that Supplies and Arson exist, the Goth bonuses of 35% and 100% have been changed to roughly 10% and 33%, or basically a 66% reduction. By comparison to other civs, their bonuses just don't stand up, especially in the earlier ages.

    2. When their 'economy bonus' was made, the concept of luring Boar wasn't mainstream, so you would send multiple villagers to harvest the boar where they were. Even in that context, their bonus boar damage and carrying capacity was relatively mediocre. However, now that boar luring to beneath the Town Center is a regular thing, their bonus is completely useless, to the point where it actually can be more of a hindrance than a help by killing the Boar earlier than expected.

1 is probably the most important...so lets talk about 2!

In a bit greater depth; Everyone and their mother knows how to lure boar now. Everyone also knows that harvesting from boar without enough villagers results in lots of food lost to decay. IE, bonus or not, you're going to want to harvest with the same number of villagers, in the same place. Translation? The bonus is useless.

Here are a few suggestions that might be more interesting:

    1. Hunted animals do not decay. I personally like this one quite a bit, it means they can harvest hunted animals with less villagers(which means less bumping and less loss of efficiency) AND it means more net food over the dark/feudal age period.

    2. Boar do zero damage to Scout Cavalry. This one could be funny, as it would let you lure with your scout with zero risk, and thereby save valuable time for your villagers, or steal enemy boar at no risk.

    3. Non-Aggressive Huntables provide +50% food. This one could also be interesting, as the location of Deer can vary wildly from game to game, and could really change up the goth playstyle.

    Now, for their Infantry.

Supplies and Arson exist; Again, this basically turns a 35% bonus and a 100% bonus into a 10% bonus and a 33% bonus. Serious nerfs, both, even if only by comparison.

The problem is, their lategame infantry spam is still quite powerful, they just can't get there. So we need a bonus that helps them in the early game, but not in the lategame.

So here's my crazy idea: Let Goths research Long Swordsman in Feudal Age.

Normally a weak and lame unit, but it could be extremely useful for early-game usage, and wouldn't change them at all for the lategame. The double upgrade would slow them down a bit to balance things out, of course, preventing super-early OP feudal aggression, but I think it could possibly work.

Put these two changes together, and you'd be looking at a civ that's been properly updated for the current state of the game, without being overpowered in the lategame.

    Thoughts?

So what should I buy - AoE2 DE or AoE Definitive Edition

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 05:47 PM PST

I am sorry it's a bit confusing. Been an on and off AoE2 player since the early 2000s. I would like to buy the game and play online vs other players [preferably in random 4v4 teams if that's still a thing].

I have in my Steam library AoE2 HD. I would like to upgrade to 2020 but I am really really confused and I don't know what to buy because on steam I see AoE2 Definitive Edition and AoE Definitive Edition. Are they online compatible? Which one is being played?

    Thank you for any info.

If you could ban a civ, who would you ban?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 12:53 AM PST

Personally I would ban the Britons, on pretty much every map. I don't find them fun to face, at all. Their archers outrange almost everything, and it seems that the only way to beat them is to get a good rush off (generally a scout rush, or if early enough a tower rush). With any level of micro, they can take out Onagers, Bombard Cannons, enemy Trebuchets and literally the only thing that works (from what I've found) is a ram push with skirms/heavy cavalry.
