Empire Wars should replace deatmatch in the ranked ladder

    Posted: 04 May 2020 07:32 AM PDT

Empire wars offers a fast-paced game without being a spamfest like in deatmatch. It puts you right where the action starts without the need to change the speed to fast. It also switches up the meta making many civs viable, specially because you still go through most ages instead of starting in post-imp.

It's an interesting alternative to regular games as we've seen in the redbull tournament, while deatmatch is pretty much a dead gamemode as far as I know. To clarify, the time limit isn't really part of the gamemode, it was added by redbull.

It might be interesting to modify arena to be like an empire wars map, since nothing happens at least until caste age unless someone is bold enough to trush in feudal or play very agressive with cumans.

Why are Mamelukes classified as archers?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 04:26 AM PDT

I know the obvious answer is probably "balance" since they can be so good if you can afford them but they're also stupid expensive and and take both anti-camel and anti-archer damage. I'm not asking for a change but it seems so out of place considering neither the throwing axeman or the gbeto are classified as archers. I guess their hit and run can be decent which makes them like CA but even then, why?

Here are the winrate stats for each civ as shown on the Redbull Wololo Tournament

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:46 AM PDT

I screenshotted the stats they showed before the final and simply factored in the civ performances from the final. If I've somehow made a mistake, let me know. The highest number of each category will be bolded, with the exception of winrate, in which case I'm bolding both the highest winrate of Civs with multiple games and the winrate of the three civs that played once and won their games.

Because I got my data by screenshotting what was shown, I am unfortunately missing stats on the Britons, Lithuanians, Slavs, Byzantines, and the Saracens. If anyone has the stats on these, let me know so I can edit it in. Stats were shown on these in earlier streams, I'd just have to go off that and factor in later performances. I fear Lithuanian stats were never shown at any time during the tournament.

    Chinese:

    Tartars:

    Never picked...?

Lithuanians (PLEASE PROVIDE STATS IF ANYONE HAS THEM):

    Picks: ???

    Bans: ???

    Uses: ???

    Winrate: ???

Speculation from memory: Modestly used with modest performance to match.

Saracens (PLEASE PROVIDE STATS IF ANYONE HAS THEM):

    Picks: ???

    Bans: ???

    Uses: ???

    Winrate: ???

Speculation from memory: Saracens were fairly commonly picked and had good winrates. They might actually be amongst the top civ winrates

Britons (PLEASE PROVIDE STATS IF ANYONE HAS THEM):

    Picks: ???

    Bans: ???

    Uses: ???

    Winrate: ???

Speculation from memory: Britons were decently picked, but either banned or had poor-to-mediocre performance.

Slavs: (PLEASE PROVIDE STATS IF ANYONE HAS THEM)

    Picks: ???

    Bans: ???

    Uses: ???

    Winrate: ???

Speculation from memory: Slavs were commonly used and had a decent performance. I believe I recall seeing them listed amongst the most picked in an earlier stat, but they fell behind in this stat on the last day and therefore didn't appear in the stat lists.

Byzantines: (PLEASE PROVIDE STATS IF ANYONE HAS THEM)

    Picks: ???

    Bans: ???

    Uses: ???

    Winrate: ???

Speculation from memory: Commonly picked, rarely used, and while they put up some interesting fights, I believe they ultimately lost most of them. (if not all)

    Huns:

    Picks: 12

    Bans: 0

    Uses: 7

    Winrate: 57.14 %

    Overall takeaway points and speculations:

-Civs with generalist eco bonuses such as the Vikings, Khmer and Aztecs did the best, more specific eco bonuses such as Frank berries/farms or Celt wood followed close behind, and very specific bonuses such as Japanese fishing ships or Indian fishermen didn't do as well as expected. This is probably because you can exploit an opponent attempting to capitalize off such an eco bonus, but nothing you do will stop the Vikings from having wheelbarrow, so you must accept playing at a disadvantage

-The 100% winrate civs may not be coincidence and might actually be more common than thought. If you think about it, both Berbers and Vietnamese are like "assassin" civs; they're not designed to be the all-around best, but they counter specific civs very hard and do a fantastic job of it. As such, they only get picked in those select scenarios where players want a hard counter (so low pick rate) but generally do pretty good at that job, thus the winrate. It's similar to Italians never being picked on landmaps ever, but the moment there's water maps, they're top-tier and have a 100% winrate. (and if not, close to it) Koreans having 100%, if I remember correct (and I MIGHT be wrong, so don't quote me on this), was vs. the Celts on a wood-sparse map. One player opted for faster wood collection, the other opted for less wood demand. Korean bonus turned out better, so while they normally don't qualify as that type of civ, they did in these very specific circumstances. If I'm mistaken, they're simply an outlier.

-Whilst some might argue the game feels more balanced than ever before, we still see plenty of civs that weren't used or had very modest appearances. One could argue this is inevitable, others might argue we should still strive to see civs like Koreans and Bulgarians at least as frequently picked as Malians or Indians, in terms of balance.

-Ethiopians and Mayans had a much weaker performance than expected. Perhaps this is a result of a lack of eco bonuses...? The Mayan eco bonus effectively dies in this game mode, and infact their farmers are the worst in the game. Extra villager might usually offset that, but they don't get that here. Ethiopian's eco bonus is comparatively very weak. I think I recall reading somewhere it's the equivalent to getting 1 extra villager on food and gold for the duration of the age up, but given that civs like Vikings get effective extra vil bonuses permanently, or that the potential Ethiopian advantage is gone the moment they're either facing ANY civ with an eco bonus or just 1 vil behind, their eco bonus is very, VERY poor.
