Ranked isn't serious and ELO doesn't matter! They're just tools to get you matched with even opponents. Calm down.

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:21 PM PDT

There seems to be a very common conception that playing ranked matches is "the real deal" and it's dead serious, super competitive and it makes people seemingly kinda "scared" of that mode. I think it's a mistake and it bothers me.

Ranked is a tool to quickly match you with opponents that are on your level. It's actually just nice. Especially when you're scared of being not competitive, you should play ranked because it will ensure that you can compete. Playing Quick Play or in Lobbies actually gives you a higher chance to play against people above your level. Ranked is the nice and safe option for you.

Also, I still see people being bothered about their ELO. Which I find honestly just stupid.

Losing ELO does not matter in the long-term. It will just make you getting easier opponents. You will always end up on your correct ELO in the long run. Your current ELO is just a fluctuation around some realistic value that fits your skill. You can never be consistently above or below your real ELO. When you peak in your ELO, you get some better opponents and lose. When you drop in your ELO, you get some worse opponents and win.

Just think about your actual skill level, not about this fluctuating number. It's just a tool to keep matches even and fair.

Dunno who needs to hear this, I am aware that most people know this, but in many, many discussions and post here I see that people overstate the importance of temporary ELO and the seriousness of Ranked Play, and I think both is actually very destructive for your game experience. Just dive into it, enjoy yourself, get better step by step, appreciate the never-ending learning curve of Age of Empires 2 and have a nice and fair competition with other players on your level.

    gl hf

PS: 1v1 is what we're talking. TG ELO is calculated wrongly.

Unpopular opinion? Non-nomad is like a trial version of AoE.

    Posted: 04 May 2021 02:06 AM PDT

Placing your TC: near your team-mates, but not too close? Near food or near gold? Near the coast for a naval civ, or far inland? Waiting to find a better spot, or placing it immediately and hoping you'll find resources nearby? Exploring around your base at the risk of enemy attack, or staying near your TC but missing out on resources? Build orders go out of the window!

All these aspects are lost in non-nomad games. It's like a huge part of the game is out of your hands, decided for you. And then players can just click their normal build-order, too, because there's always the same number of sheep nearby, same resources, etc.

Incas vs Cumans, new to multiplayer

    Posted: 04 May 2021 12:32 AM PDT

Just wanted to share the story of how I discovered multiplayer is actually fun.

Playing games vs people makes me really nervous for some reason, so I've just stuck to vs the AI since I recently got DE, though I enjoy watching some competitive content. Something finally clicked today and I took the plunge into online play. In my second ever online game I was Cumans vs Incas. I'm still still learning civ bonuses and builds, so the tower rush he pulled on me took me by surprise. But I'm rather proud of how I handled it.

I snuck most of my vils out to build a second TC (Cumans bonus) next to his base, hidden by a few forests. I left enough at home to keep up the impression that his tower games were going according to plan.

I shifted all vil production to the second TC, loaded up on wood, got a healthy farm going, and started counter-attacking with scouts as I stockpiled for castle. He was focused on building more towers to take me off my mines back at home, and eventually he started chipping away at buildings with m@a. I warded off the builders and infantry with TC fire and was able to stay on the mines long enough to get stone for a castle and gold for a few rams in addition to ageing up.

I hit castle age then came at him from the fog near his base. Melted his palisade with pre-built cuman rams, and stormed in with an army of castle-dropping villagers and some scouts to body block and chase down vils. The castle went up near his TC and he resigned.

It was just a good dirty fight that highlighted both civs abilities and played out very memorably. Realizing I'd never get a game like that vs the AI, I was sold on multiplayer.

TLDR: New to multiplayer. Got Inca tower rushed. Made use of the Cumans bonuses to come back and drop a castle on his TC.

Inca balance suggestion: allow buildings on hills

    Posted: 04 May 2021 06:13 AM PDT

After the nerf to incas' villagers, which was a core part of their identity as a civ, I was trying to think about other ways to compensate for that and maybe form a new part of their identity. One idea was to allow incan buildings to be placed even on uneven terrain/hills, where they wouldn't be able to normally. It makes historical sense, given that they lived in mountainous terrain and built cities and farms all along the Andean ranges. I also feel like it aligns well from a gameplay perspective with their other bonuses, which tend to be small but significant "quality-of-life" improvements that just make things a bit smoother (extra house space, smoother dark age with the free llama, villagers more resilient to raids). Perhaps it could even be a team bonus to replace their current one, which is pretty weak.

    Thoughts?

    Sick of updates disabling mods

    Posted: 04 May 2021 08:39 AM PDT

I have 48 mods in my list and now I've got to remember what combination of them I had before that was what I wanted... Surely, SHIRLEY it's not that hard to have the game remember your previous settings/selected mods? Of course you only find out once you're already in a one v one with massive trees everywhere and a completely different UI, no villager idle alert etc etc.

    New Update

    Posted: 04 May 2021 02:03 AM PDT

    What are your thoughts?

    Mine:

    - I kinda like the free Cannon Galleon from Chemistry.

    - The Sicilian 1st Crusade tech's conversion-resistance is similar to the Teuton's bonus.

    - I'm going to miss the Malay unlimited fish traps.
