Analysis of the Boyar buff (they may be an insane unit now)

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 03:02 AM PDT

One of the upcoming balance changes is a buff to the Slavic unique unit, giving another +2 base melee armour, meaning a fully-upgraded Elite Boyar will have the following stats:

    HP: 150

    Attack: 18

    Armour: 11/7

Compared to a generic FU Paladin, this is the same attack and pierce armour, 30 less HP, and 6 more melee armour. Boyars cost +5 gold and -10 food compared to Knight-line. The reload time is the same.

So 1v1 against a generic Paladin, the Boyar is doing 13 damage per hit, while the Paladin does just 7. Boyar kills Paladin in 14 hits, with 52 HP remaining.

Against a Frank Paladin, the Boyar needs 15 hits, winning with 45 HP remaining.

Against a Teuton Paladin, the Boyar needs 16 hits, winning with 38 HP remaining.

Against a Lithuanian Paladin with 4 relics, both the Boyar and the Paladin kill each other with 14 hits, so whoever attacks first wins.

    Against a Leitis with 4 relics...uh, nevermind.

Obviously the Boyar is slower and has less HP, so deals with Arbalesters less well than even generic Paladins (but still better than Cavaliers by a long shot).

The Elite Boyar tanks one more hit from FU Heavy Camels than (generic) Paladins, the same number of Halberdier hits, takes 1 damage from FU Hussars (vs. 6 for Paladins) and (edit: I made a mistake here, now fixed) 6 damage from FU Champions (vs. 12 for Paladins).

In short, Elite Boyars cost similar to Paladins and are way better in melee, and still a lot better than Cavalier against ranged units. No shit.

However, there is another crucial difference which I think could make Elite Boyars a really insane unit. The upgrades from Knight to Paladin cost 1600F/1050G and take a total of 270 in-game seconds to research. The upgrade to Elite Boyar costs 1000F/600G and takes 60 in-game seconds. The early-Imp powerspike potential is ridiculous, with Slavs being able to produce a unit which is stronger than Frank/Teuton/Lithuanian Paladins just 60 seconds after reaching Imp, all powered by insane Farming eco. Since 2-Castle Boyars produce at the same speed as 4-Stable Knights, getting sufficient production isn't even too hard as compared to cheaper units which you can afford to spam from 6+ buildings even in early Imp.

Once this balance change comes out, Slavs might be pretty scary, especially to Cavalry civs. Alternatively, if you keep getting wrecked by Burgundian fast-Paladin, I've got just the civ for you.

How do people have multiple accounts, do you just make a new Steam account? Doesn't that mean you need to buy the game twice?

I'm not looking to smurf, I kind of want a drunk/tired/messing around account and keep my main one for trying properly. Yes, I know it's stupid, ranked isn't real, nobody is looking at my score except me. Still. Seems like it's a common thing, how do people do it?

Polish civilization but it might be the real one

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 07:05 AM PDT

This took me 2 days so be kind when reviewing it plz.

In this post I try to make something similar to the real Polish civ by using the screenshots. Found here.

The highlited stuff is the hints I used for the bonus guesses which is found in the DLC reveal.

Poles – Stride across fertile plains with industrious farmers and powerful nobles at your back as you build the fledgling Kingdom of Poland into one of medieval Europe's most powerful states. The Polish unique unit is the Obuch, a brutal infantryman whose war hammer tears the armor from enemy units.

    Key points are:

    • Hussar bonus
    • Farm bonuses
    • Nobles
    • Obuch

For the Obuch stats, I used this info from a google search:

    • A war hammer is a long-handled weapon that was used by foot-soldiers, especially in the defense of fortified walls and in action against mounted men-at-arms.
    • An alternative to a sword or an axe, medieval war hammers offered a greater chance of making an effective strike against an armored foe. Used mostly in the late Middle Ages, war hammers were used against mounted warriors or in close combat, depending on the length of the handle.

So with that, I present the Poles!

    Poles

    Cavalry Civilization

    Bonuses:

    • Light Cavalry line takes up 0.75 population space
    • Herdables +2 LoS
    • Reseeding and Building Farms immediately provides 20/25/30/40 food
    • Can build Folwarks (the 3x3 Mill)

Unique Unit: Obuch (70 food 25 gold), Imperial Hussar

Brutal infantry unit that tears the armour off of enemy units

    Unique Technologies:

    • Sejm: Villagers are produced 30% faster (350 food 250 gold)
    • Szchlachta: All units 5% cheaper; produce 10% faster (500 food 650 gold)

Team Bonus: Light Cavalry line +4 vs Gunpowder units

    Obuch stats:

    • 11/15 attack
    1. Removes 1/1 enemy armour per hit for 30s
    2. +2/3 vs Cavalry
    3. +3/4 vs Standard building
    4. +3/4 vs Eagle Scouts
    • 65/80 hp
    • 1/1, 1/2 armour
    • 2.1 RoF
    • 0.85/0.95 movement speed
    • 20/15s creation time
    • Elite Obuch costs 1150 food 550 gold

    Imperial Hussar stats:

    • 8 attack
    1. +15 vs Monks
    2. +3 vs Gunpowder units
    • 80 hp
    • 1/2 armour
    • 1.9 RoF
    • 1.55 movement speed
    • 30s creation time
    • Imperial Hussar upgrade costs 650 food 800 gold

    Folwark stats:

    • Available in Fuedal Age
    • Costs 200 wood
    • Can garrison up to 10 villagers, fires 2 arrows (5 when fully garrisoned
    • 3 (4 in Castle/Imperial) attack
    • 700/800/900 hp
    • 2.2 (2.0 in Castle/Imperial) RoF
    • 4 range
    • 40s build time
    • Affected by Ballistics, Fletching, Bodkin Arrow, Hoardings

    Missing Technologies:

    • Barracks:
    • Archery Range: Parthian Tachtics, Hand Cannoneer
    • Stable: Camels, Battle Elephants, Steppe Lancers
    • Siege Workshop: Heavy Scorpion, Bombard Cannon
    • Blacksmith: Bracer
    • Castle:
    • Docks: Shipwright, Elite Cannon Galleon
    • University: Treadmill Crane, Bombard Cannon, Architecture
    • Monastery: Heresy
    • Economy: Stone Shaft Mining

    Overview:

This civiliztion would have a powerful Dark and Fuedal Age with a strong farm bonus, a useful Scout Cavalry bonus, possibly saving you from being housed, and the raiding defense by Folwarks.

In Castle Age they fall off a little bit, with no new bonus other than +5 food for new farms than in Fuedal Age but they now recieve access to the powerful but slow Obuch and faster producing villagers.

In Imperial Age the Poles are at their best when they recieve the rewards of their faster producing villagers, have cheaper and faster producing units, recieve a massive boost to their farms and Obuchs, can now make Imperial Hussars and can produce more Hussars than other civilizations.

I hope it's nearly accurate to the real thing!

    Change Log:

    17th June:

    • Increased wood cost of Grodys from 180 wood to 200 wood.
    • Increased RoF of Grodys in Fuedal Age from 2.0s to 2.2s
    • Changed hp of Grodys from 800 to 700/800/900 hp
    • Changed wording of Sejm from Villagers produce 30% faster to Villagers are produced 30% faster
    • Changed name of the 3x3 Mill from "Grodys" to "Folwarks"

Enemy team on only noobs game

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 05:26 PM PDT

In the past four months, Hera reached 2.6k, dropped below 2.5k, then today reached 2635 with a 35 games win streak. In the meanwhile, the highest elo ever by another player is 2552 (Mbl)

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 01:46 PM PDT

So on the 25 of february this year, Hera reached 2.6k elo. At that time only 4 other players had reached 2.5k, and none of them higher than 2530.

Then 3 months later, on May 24 he dropped to 2487. And now thanks to a 36 game winstreak (started at 2534 when he was already rank #1) he reached 2640.

Here are the top 10 highest elo ever reached :

    • Hera : 2640
    • Mbl : 2552
    • Vivi : 2537
    • Villese : 2530
    • TheViper : 2528
    • Liereyy : 2527
    • Mr Yo : 2526
    • ACCM : 2523
    • Slam : 2517
    • Capoch : 2507

Edit : The streak just came to an end against Mbl at 36.

Another fun fact, there is the same elo difference between #1 and #2 (Mr Yo at 2526) as between #2 and #23 (F1re and Modri at 2414)

How good was Hera's win streak really?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 11:26 PM PDT

How good was Hera's win streak really?

TL;DR: very good! Hera's streak ended after 36 games.

    36 wins

    • on the highest level
    • against the best players
    • with random civilizations.

A streak like that is nothing short of impressive.

And the resulting Elo gap deserves some recognition, too. We all know that Elo is not the most important thing and often not representative. But can we appreciate that

    • there are 104 points between rank 1 (Hera) and rank 2,
    • rank 2 to 10 are within 36 points,
    • rank 2 to 20 (BacT with 2422 points) are within the same range - 104 points - as rank 1 and 2?

PS: I love that MbL just went online to break the streak 1111

Something I've Learned and a Question

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 11:21 AM PDT

Switching strategies and being adaptable during multiplayer games is important. If your opponent makes spears then obviously your knight rush is not gonna go so well. But the other side of that is stick with your game plan.

I made the rookie mistake of switching from a fast castle to a scout rush when I was in no way able to support that. By the time that my scouts were out my opponent had walls up and I wasn't able to even touch their economy. They rushed in and destroyed my walls/base (and my wifi decided that was a great time to give me a lag spike) and whatever army I did have was completely trounced (rightfully so) by my opponents knights. To add insult to injury I was playing Franks XD

Today I learned be adaptable to what your opponent is doing but make sure to keep your game plan intact.

Any of you have a similar story?

My civ concept series 23. Last Chapter: The Basques

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 11:53 PM PDT

My civ concept series 23. Last Chapter: The Basques

Hi all! After the Bengalis (https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/o0o5bd/my_civ_concept_series_22_the_bengalis/), next and last civ will be the Basques, the last civ in my concepts. It has been a long journey, but after all journeys, we must return home, and since the Basque Country is my home, let me introduce you into the historical facts that led to this civ concept. BTW, did you know that the first man to circumnavigate the Earth was Basque? Did you know that Basques were the only to defeat mighty Charlemagne's army in a major battle? It will be a little longer, but there's so much to tell you!

The origin of the Basques and both Basque languages (Euskara and the extinct Aquitanian) is still unknown. Many archaeologists, geneticists and linguists have theorized about the origins of both people and language, but don't agree whether they are native or emigrational. The lack of relationships between old Euskara and the rest of languages make most linguists think that it is indeed originating from the Pyrenees. The National Geographic Society Genographic Project concluded that Basques share unique genetic patterns, different from all of the surrounding populations. Genetic researches found similarities between Basque, Welsh and Irish chromosomes.

Romans were the first who wrote that Navarre, Aragon and Aquitaine were inhabited by the Vascones. There is no evidence that they were related to the three tribes (Autrigones, Caristii and Varduli) that were located in modern day Basque autonomous community (Euskadi). Gaius Marius, one of the most important strategists of the Roman Empire, had a personal guard made by Varduli people. These entered in alliance with Rome after facing raids from other Celtic tribes, and helped Rome in their campaigns in Britannia, thus gaining the status of fida (faithful) and remaining in nearly total autonomy. These 3 tribes (likely Celts), due to the expansion of the Vascones, started speaking Euskara, and were finally absorbed by the Vascones. Romans founded the city of Pompaelo (Pamplona, named after Pompey), from where they controlled the whereabouts of the Basques. After the fall of the Empire, Bagaudae (peasant revolts) happened, first against the remaining of the Roman garrisons and then against their allied Visigoths, who were never able to hold properly Basque lands.

Later both Frankish (who had conquered the Visigoths in France) and Visigoth kingdoms launched campaigns against the Basque, who had raided agricultural zones of Toulouse. Of course those armies were much stronger than the Basques' but whenever they faced defeat they hid in the mountains, where they were hard to attack. Later in 602, Franks founded the Duchy of Gascony, which included the city of Bordeaux, in a way to improve relations with the Basques. This proved to be unsuccessful: not only attacks from and against Basques both by Franks and Goths did not stop (In fact, Tariq-ibn-Ziyad's invasion from the south succeeded mostly due to Visigoth king Roderic's absence from the capital Toledo, because he was fighting a Basque revolt), but in 673, Duke Lupus I, heir to both Gascony and Aquitaine, proclaimed the Duchies independent from the Frankish Empire and attacked Limoges. The wars between Aquitaine and the Franks only stopped after the invasion of the Umayyad Caliphate (Tariq-ibn-Ziyad 4 and 5), when, after losing Bordeaux, Odo the Great had to ask for Charles Martel's help (Tours 732) and accept Frankish sovereignty. Odo's descendants rebelled against the Franks again, but Pepin the Short run out of patience and, after defeating the Umayyads in Narbona (they had taken control of Septimania in Tariq-ibn-Ziyad 3), sent all his army and devastated both Aquitaine and Vasconia (Gascony).

Pepin's successor Charlemagne appointed counts in the borders of Vasconia in order to reduce the influence of Basque dukes. In the South, the Umayyad had taken control of Pamplona, but, again, Basques revolted and regained Pamplona. They also found an unexpected ally in Banu Qasi Basque Muslim realm. Based in southern Navarre, it was founded by a Visigoth count that converted to Islam, after the revolt of Pamplona. The security of not being attacked in the south encouraged Basques to defy Charlemagne, who sent his army across the Pyrenees and destroyed the walls of the Basque capital, Pamplona. In retaliation, Basques ambushed the retreating Frankish army in Roncevaux Pass (Roncesvalles or Orreaga) and killed the entire rearguard. Among the dead was Roland and many paladins. Franks attacked again Pamplona, but an anti-Frankish faction had arose, led by Iñigo Arista (Eneko Aritza), and these attacks had no effect. After Charlemagne's death, Northern Basques (from Vasconia) tried to rebel, but were subdued and made part of an expedition that had the goal of conquering Pamplona from the Southern Basques. They looted the city without resistance, because Iñigo Arista's and Banu Qasi armies were waiting for them again in the Roncevaux Pass. This time, the commanders were only captured, but the Kingdom of Navarre was established as a result, with Iñigo Arista becoming the first King in 824. Next 40 years saw how Vikings invaded Bordeaux, Franks regained it, and King Charles the Bald named the Basque leader Sancho II Sánchez duke of Vasconia (now including Bordeaux).

Years 864 to 1035 saw the golden era of the Basques, because of the newly gained strength of both Kingdom of Navarre and the Duchy of Gascony, who strengthened their ties by marriage and alliance. During Sancho III Mitarra's reign, Gascony became de facto independent from the kingdom of France. Navarre helped Gascony expelling the Norsemen (Vikings) from Gascony, and even the rulers brought Gascony into suzerainty of the Kingdom of Navarre. But certain personal interests among ducal families resulted on a gradual division of Gascony lands into smaller counties, and the introduction of the Gascon language made the Aquitanian language become slowly extinct. Gascony distanced itself more and more from the Navarre Basques until the Duke of Aquitaine was Henry II of England, who held England and France (Angevin Empire) until the Hundred Years War. France recovered Gascony and it was forever part of France. Today in France, only in the French Basque Country provinces (Labourd = Lapurdi, Lower Navarre = Behe Nafarroa, Soule = Zuberoa) is Euskara still spoken.

With respect to Navarre, Iñigo Arista ruled from Pamplona wisely, in the beginning paying taxes to Córdoba so that Christianity could be kept. Banu Qasi´s ruler Musa ibn Musa was Arista's half brother, and both rebelled against the Emirate. Musa had to obey Córdoba´s rule, but García Íñiguez, Arista's son continued allying himself with Asturians, Gascons, Aragonese and everyone opposed to Córdoba. An anti-Muslim current arose, which brought the end of Banu Qasi family, and direct confrontation with the Emirate. This lead to 150 years of wars between Leon and Navarre against the Caliphate of Córdoba. In 999, Pamplona was attacked by Almanzor, and the King was killed a year later. At that time, the Kingdom was in a much weakened position, but they reverted that situation with alliances with the rising County of Castile. Sancho III the Great gave the Kingdom of Navarre its major strength and expansion in 1035 (see map below, all pink lands were under the control of the Kingdom, orange was a protectorate by parentage and beige is Gascony, a close ally to Navarre). He also wrote a will that resulted on the division of the kingdom in 5 parts, and subsequent struggle between brothers for a major power. The kingdom of Aragon was founded by Ramiro, while Ferdinand murdered García (the first son and heir of Pamplona). García's son is known to you, since it was Sancho IV (El Cid 1). From then on, Navarre became a minor county between the strong kingdoms of Castile and Aragon (except for 1157-1199, in which García Ramírez the Restorer fought against Castile) until the formation of Spain and its treatment as a province. The Basque language also receded in favor of Latin, until its current spread in Biscay (Bizakaia), Gipuzkoa, North of Álava (My birthplace) and North of Navarre.

The Basque lands in 14th and 15th centuries were weakened by the War of the Bands (in Gascony, Navarre and the Basque Country), in which nearly simultaneously, aristocratic families entered several civil wars for power and honor. Fishing and trading overseas (it will be discussed below) gave a huge wealth to Basque lands, and Isabel of Castile gave Basque lords autonomy in exchange for trading goods, an autonomy that today is still kept.

Just for fun, I'm going to write some words and expressions in Euskera (all of them related to AoE2):

    https://preview.redd.it/tctt00gsur571.png?width=647&format=png&auto=webp&s=cd1fc0e76678ba3d06356137728adfde1326065f

Regarding the civ balance, Basques get a tech tree that reflects mostly their strengths: Towers, infantry, foot archers and navy. There are two bonuses regarding skirmishers and towers that will be discussed below. But we can also find two bonuses regarding fishing ships and a unique unit that will act as a mix between a fishing ship, a trade cog and a galleon (see description below). The reason of this is that in the Bay of Biscay, Atlantic Ocean, North Sea and even in Iceland, Greenland and Canadian waters, Basques dominated the fishing and especially the whaling. In 670, there's evidence of whale oil (very useful for illumination) sold by Basques to Frankish. Of course, whoever controlled the Basque lands took an advantage and got profit of the ability of Basques in whaling, which was still an important market for the Basque until the 17th century.

    https://preview.redd.it/qogpblgour571.png?width=99&format=png&auto=webp&s=c5e233515bd32482c2ceaac156e5e90f00966b77

The unique unit is a fast infantry with arrow resistance and bonus attack vs siege. I know, that sounds a lot like an Eagle. Well, Basques were known for their guerrilla warfare and ambushes (that's the reason for the Skirmisher bonus), and their huge knowledge of cliffs, hills and strategic sites in those mountainous lands. They were able to surprise many strong armies (especially Franks and Berbers), killing mighty knights and looting their belongings. As you can see above in the picture of a Basque soldier, it carries many weapons (spears/javelins can be used to thrust them in horses or thrown/aimed at enemies, and after that they would fight with the sword, which is a better weapon than the spear for closed terrain), but just a small shield and no armor. This has nothing to do with Eagles being my favorite unit in the game 111111. Anyway, this unit is a fantastic complement to the Basque army and the bonuses have sort of historical accuracy. The Castle Age unique tech has the name of the stone Tower Houses (see translations above) located at the top of hills, in which Basque lords lived and controlled their lands. The Imperial Age unique tech is a depiction of the power of Basque infantry.

Basques lack a strong eco bonus, with only Fishing ships benefitting from a higher speed when going for deep fish. But in Feudal Age, they can start harassing opponents with 4 attack Skirmishers after fletching (they will deal 2 damage to vills, thus becoming a threat more than an annoyance), and with 840 HP Watch Towers (at this point their bonus overlaps with the Byzantine one) for a trush. Towers in the end will become the tankiest in the game, with 3713HP for the Keep and 3663HP for the Bombard Tower. They will also benefit from the Castle Age technology, which will increase damage against rams and cavalry.

In water maps, Basques will do fine if they survive the first issue of lacking an eco bonus. Then, their navy will be very good (only lacking the Heavy demo ship), and they can add a late game warship that can collect gold when working in fish traps. It could also do hit-and-run against Fast fire ships and trade well with Galleons, but can't be used to destroy buildings, unlike the rest of the warships. In maps like nomad, or four lakes, the Whale ship could generate tons of gold.

As for land units, Skirmishers with 10 attack are a great addition to any army, even though lacking the last armor upgrade, having a minimum range and slow rate of fire. Arbalesters can accompany them, or leave gold savings for infantry (although they also get FU Light Cavalry and Cavaliers). Regarding infantry, they lack the last armor, but make up for it with a bonus attack against infantry, provided by the Imperial Age UT. The Basque infantry is one of the few that could stand a Goth flood. Ranged units could be a problem, but the UU can effectively soak arrows and snipe siege weapons. Basque siege has Siege ram and Bombard Cannon as its best units.

I hope you enjoyed, and of course, suggestions are welcome.

Thank you so much for the support, suggestions, ideas, upvotes and even awards! You guys are f***ing great! It has been a real pleasure to share with you a little of historical information and the civ balances. I will take a short break to gather all feedback received in a file. Red Bull Wololo IV predictions?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 03:20 AM PDT

I don't know if I've seen a thread about this yet, so here's mine. What are your predictions for RBW IV? Any crazy upsets? Who will do well, and who won't? Who will win it all?

Maybe it's the fanboy in me, but I can see Jordan ending up in the top 8. He looked pretty solid during the qualifiers. I doubt he can beat Viper, but he should be able to win against Song Song and Vinch, although Vinch has also shown to be a very solid RB player, so who knows.

I also have a feeling we will see a new winner this time. Maybe Hera, he has been playing very solid, and did end up winning HC. Maybe Viper, but the format doesn't seem to suite him well.

    Stop blaming the map!

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 08:29 AM PDT

Almost half my victories end with the opponent typing gg and then immediately blaming the map. This is not only a bad excuse but also takes away some of the feeling of accomplishment from your opponent. It's a nice way of saying "you'd never beat me in a fair game" in my opinion.

I love postgame discussion but acknowledge your opponent beat you and not the map.

What to do when instantly douched on nomad?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 03:33 AM PDT

I played a team game and 2 of us started in the same spot. I couldn't vill rush as our tc's went up at the same time. When my TC died i barely had wood for a lumber camp. All i had was a dock, 8 villages and 20 food, how am I meant to compete with that?

Is tower/tc rush vs. AI considered cheating?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 11:31 AM PDT

Hey folks, so I picked up this awesome game again and practiced a bit. I am finally able to beat extreme AI consistently with cumans and tc rush. (if interested you can watch a recap at https://youtu.be/OHd3d9jP-i8 )

Long Story short: it feels a bit like cheating because the AI doesn't interact very intelligent, but on the other hand I can't even beat hard AI without aggressive tower (it out booms me everytime, don't even know how the heck it is producing so much units while progressing so quickly)

How do you think it's meant to be played? Maybe devs wanted you to get crazy strategies to beat the AI?

    Best AOE2 Era Movie?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 08:26 PM PDT

So I just recently rewatched Kingdom of Heaven since starting to play AoE2 again and was so excited to see the Saracens use trebs and Siege Towers to attack the walls of Jerusalem. Does anyone else have good movies that use the AoE2 techs?

Why Can't lobby matches affect DM rank?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 09:56 PM PDT

How can we ask the devs to have lobby games affect DM rank? The whole purpose of rank system is to give balanced matches and if lobby games impact Death match rank, we would have a better ranking system for balanced games? Its the least they can do after they removed DM rank.
