Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 12 Week 4: Persians vs Turks

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 09:44 PM PDT

Aaaand these discussions just got like a year and a half longer.... thanks FE Kappa

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Cumans vs Ethiopians, and next up is the Persians vs Turks!

    Persians: Cavalry civilization

    • Start with +50f, +50w
    • Town Centers and Docks have 2x hp; work +10/15/20% faster in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Knights +2 attack vs archers
    • Unique Unit: War Elephant (It's a huge freakin' elephant idk what else you'd expect)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Kamandaran (Archer-line now costs 60w, instead of 25w, 45g)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Mahouts (War Elephants move +30% faster)

    Turks: Gunpowder civilization

    • Gunpowder units +25% hp; gunpowder techs cost -50%; Chemistry free
    • Gold miners work +20% faster
    • Scout-line gains +0/+1 armor
    • Light Cavalry and Hussar upgrades free
    • TEAM BONUS: Gunpowder units created +25% faster
    • Unique Unit: Janissary (powerful, general-purpose hand cannoneer)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Sipahi (Cavalry Archers +20 hp)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Artillery (Cannon Galleons, Bombard Cannons, and Bombard Towers gain +2 range)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alrighty, two AoK classics here! So for 1v1 on open maps, neither of these civs are exactly world-beaters, and yet, they don't *feel* that bad to play. Persians have a very smooth start, a great eco, and decent military options throughout the game, whereas Turks may lack in trash units, but they have amazing mobile options in Light Cav and Cav Archers. Who do you favor here on maps like Arabia?
    • On closed maps, this match up would seem to depend heavily on exactly what kind of closed map you are playing. In something like a Black Forest team game, Persians would seem to have an edge with their incredibly powerful economy, and deadly late game that can legitimately lead to War Elephants. Turks, meanwhile, would likely have a large edge on 1v1 Arena, as they are able to take map control early on and constantly out-range the Persian army. What sorts of situations on closed maps do you prefer each of these civs?
    • In team games in general, Persians are a strong pocket pick (if not quite top-tier), whereas Turks are not too far off when it comes to being a flank civ. Do you prefer the more orthodox playstyle of Persian pocket, who can still go scouts all the way to Paladins/Camels/Hussars quite comfortably, or do you think that the Turk late game potential with super cav archers and gunpowder is more deadly?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Bulgarians vs Incas. Hope to see you there! :)

Elite Unique Units should have unique sprites/skins

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 07:35 AM PDT

There's been a lot of demand for unique castles, monks, villagers and pretty much all the basic units based on their civilization. The most common argument used against this is unit readability. If the same unit gets different skins it might become too difficult to recognize.

If readability is so important, then why doesn't it come up when talking about Unique units? The Elite UUs are actually counted as different units than the regular UUs. Despite that, they look exactly the same. In my opinion, if FE wants to change certain skins in the game, these should be top priority because they will actually enhance the gameplay as one won't have to constantly click on the enemy units to see if they're elite or not.

Also a side note, FE already added new skins for units that didn't have any. Eagles and Elite Eagles were identical in AoC and Elite Cannon Galleons got there golden guns in DE 20 years after their introduction. This isn't some out of box suggestion I'm asking here.

With Dawn of the Dukes, the Slavs need to be renamed

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 06:24 AM PDT

At this time, we have the Slavs, who apparently represent all Slavs. But now we have the Bulgarians, and soon will have the Poles and Bohemians, all of whom are Slavic nations. Thus the Slavs should be renamed. I'm not sure what to - maybe Rus' or Ruthenians to more strictly represent the East Slavs.

These historic names would avoid any modern connotation as much as possible and link the civ to the Kievan Rus' federation.

Played rank for the first time today

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 06:31 PM PDT

So after watching a lot of spirit of the law and T90 encouraging people to play ranked games I finally decided to sit down and play online. And I was actually able to win two games today! The people I played against were so much fun to play against, they applied pressure and had me on the ropes at times (the first game was terrifying with bloody swarms of battle elephants) and were incredibly gracious and helpful. It was a nice change of pace from my usual games against the AI.

Thanks for being such an encouraging group and pushing people to play online. For those who are still scared to try it, give it a shot who knows you might win! Or youll go out swinging :D

    Top 1000 Players - win/loss streaks

    Top 1000 Players - win/loss streaks

    A few things:

    1. This is a follow-up to an earlier post, where I incorrectly stated that the longest win streak on AoE2DE has been 31. In fact, it has been much longer, as you can see below.
    2. My apologies for the previous mistake and my thanks to the helpful users, pointing me in the right direction, especially u/HamR_OClock, u/CelebrationFamous817, u/oNICOLSoRFCo, and u/Akukuhaboro.
    3. The screenshot shows just the 8 players with the longest win streaks out of the top 1000 ranked 1v1 RM players.
    4. The data is coming from aoe2.net
    5. The full interactive report with some instructions and other data can be found here: http://dondinardoni.com/my-aoe2-stats/

Having said all that, my excitement about Hera's 25 games win streak is somewhat diminished, seeing that Mbl leads that particular race with a 73 (!) games win streak. What a beast!

[SOLVED] Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition - stuttering/freezing every few seconds

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 01:16 AM PDT

This is a public service announcement. I can't add this as a comment to the numerous posts I found because they're all archived, so I'm making a post (Reddit is #1 result when you Google the issue).

I had the game freeze every ~15secs. Spoiler, the issue was Malwarebytes!

I suspect that other anti-malware / -viruses might also cause this issue.

SOLUTION: add your steam/ or <dir to game>/ folder as an exception to your anti-whatever. This will stop it monitoring the game while you play.

How do I get rid of what looks like a clan tag under my name?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 06:08 AM PDT

    <3 Dave

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 05:45 PM PDT

For context: I started a new job at my office, moved from engineering to sales manager. With that come new responsibilities, thus here I sit on a conference call with our Asia sales manager...

Something feels weird when we start the call.. The sound of the guy's voice is so incrediblely familiar.. friendly.. it's soft, yet strong. comforting and confident.. time passes, and I can't stop thinking about it... then finally, 30 minutes in - it hits me.. this guy sounds just like Dave.

Honestly, I was dreading being a part of these calls. But now I will look forward to them every week.

    My first ranked game!

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 02:38 PM PDT

Hi! After quite a lot of games against the AI, some unranked games (mostly on BF and other noobs maps), this evening I've found the courage to try a ranked game. Even though I was a long time player of the old AOEII-HD, manage to find the courage to go ranked was quite hard. Actually all the post that I've found here on Reddit, explaining that we shouldn't be scared about ranked game as they are created to help us to find players at our level and to grow, well these posts help me a lot! Of course I've lost the game, 1v1 arena, I was Byzantines and opponent was Italians (and that's fun, because I'm Italian!), nothing special. He started quite aggressively, building some production building next to my walls, luckily I found and destroyed them before was too late, so I got the total control of the middle area, I even managed to take ALL the reliques. But then problems started, instead of taking the advantage of the momentum to push into his base, I settled down, we both hit imperial and he came out of his walls with an army at least double than mine with pike (which ofc melted my cavalry), Genovese crossbowmen and some cavs. I was slowly starting to create the first Cataphracts, but one of my weaknesses is that I'm not very flexible (not at all) when I have to switch and adapt my strategy, long story short: he melted my army and in few minutes he was inside my base. Called GG and game was over. After the game we had some nice and relaxed chat about the game and I have to say that I really enjoyed this game (way better than some too-easy win in BF on custom game), for sure next will follow soon! My suggestion: don't hesitate, go and play ranked (at the end your rank is only a number btw...)!

Poles Mill Theory (Lords of the West DLC)

    Posted: 15 Jun 2021 10:28 AM PDT

So as most of us have noticed the Poles get a mill that is 3x3 and many have speculated what exactly their special mill can do and i'd like to offer some theories.

    1. The mill can garrison villagers. This may be why its so larger in size and would be a nice little civ bonus.
    2. The mill can be used to gather ALL resources and research ALL eco techs (other than TC ones). Maybe this is their eco bonus, which would be huge. Maybe its called a supply cache or something, and it costs 125 wood to make it balanced. But imagine placing it at a gold pile that's right next to your berries, or imagine placing one next to your wood line that's next to a pile of stone. Would be really effective and save tons of wood.
    3. Mills produce herdables. Maybe every 3 minutes the mill spawns one pig or sheep. This one makes the most sense with the screenshots they gave us, but to me the most lackluster. Unless they get a major herdables boost, like herdables don't decay? I dont see how that bonus would be strong. Or atleast how it could compete with other late game eco bonuses.

What do you think the Polish Mills will do? Any theories yourselves?

EDIT: Also, maybe for option 1 - Mills grant 5 population.EDIT 2: I think people are underestimating option 2. On nomad for example, with everything all in one, if you put your TC on a wood line and a pile of gold, you could put your mill on berries/hunt and skip taking a lumber camp or mining camp and get all your eco upgrades from the mill. That's 175 wood saved there, not including build time saved. OR in any late game scenario, lets say your back gold/stone runs out, you could easily transition those villagers to farms. OR if you have way too many villagers on wood (which lets be honest, happens to all of us), you could just have them drop farms right there, next to your wood line. Saving you idle/walk time, and 75 wood.

    Houfnice Theory

    Posted: 16 Jun 2021 07:49 AM PDT

So I've been thinking about potential ways you could upgrade a bombard cannon. Giving them much more damage vs buildings seems OP unless Bohemians lack Siege Engineers. You could give them a bit more range or make them harder to kill, maybe, but that's kinda boring. I did a little research (lol Wikipedia) and it seems like the houfnice was mainly used as an anti-personnel weapon, so I'm thinking... What about a BBC that does pass-through damage like a Scorpion? It'd be like an infantry eraser.
