Five arguments against adding North American civs to AOE2

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 04:41 AM PST

There continues to be a sizeable minority of folks who zealously argue for North American AOE2 civs such as the Iroquois, Mississippians and Ancestral Puebloans. Here are some of my thoughts as to why they should not be included:

    1. Tech tree? – technologically most of these chiefdoms would be best placed in the 'tool age' of AOE1. Even then they would not have access to all the 'tool age' technologies, such as stone walls, towers and stone mining. Warfare consisted of using wooden clubs and bows and arrows and most of the AOE2 buildings would be unavailable (siege workshop, blacksmith, stable, university, castle) never mind the individual technologies contained therein.

    2. No sources – because these chiefdoms did not develop writing our knowledge is sparse and heavily dependent on archaeology. Who is the protagonist in your campaign? Nobody, because all we know about a period of 100 years or so is that there was less pottery produced, possibly because of the effects of the Little Ice Age. You get the idea.

    3. Timeframe – there is a tendency for most ambitious American 'civ concepts' to be based around sources from the late 1600s/1700s. Concepts based around this content belong in AOE3. Consider that by 1600 archery had become obsolete in England (the game's quintessential archer civ), castles had become obsolete due to advanced artillery and the last recorded use of a trebuchet was during the siege of Tenochtitlan in 1521 (ironically, it didn't work because the Spanish had lost the skill of making them and only tried it due to their gunpowder stores running out).

    4. Small scale battles – the Mississippians are semi-regularly proposed as an AOE2 civ. Historical accounts of their battles (from the 16th and 17th centuries!) speak of a few large scale battles of a few hundred men on each side armed with clubs and bows. Compare with say the Battle of Grunwald (1410) which may have had as many as 66,000 participants.

    5. No interaction with other civs – who are the antagonists in a campaign? Surely they can only be other Mississippians or Ancestral Puebloans and the only thing we know about these different tribes or clans is that they used a slightly varied technique in their basket making or similar.

    Counter arguments and rebuttals

    1. But the game is already historically inaccurate! – yes, but in my opinion that isn't justification for making it less and less historical. Where do you draw the line? Louis XIV's maison de roi cavalry? Zulus? Gondor?

    2. There are already Aztecs, Mayans and Incas! – in response I would say that two wrongs don't make a right. However, even setting that aside those civilisations are a better fit regarding each of the five points I raised above.

    3. Euro-centrism – I think we can all agree that 'empty America' and 'empty Africa' narratives are inaccurate. I am also aware that in many senses the people groups who lived in these areas had knowledge and skills in relation to their environments that were superior to those of Europeans. However, I think making up loads of guff to include these tenuous 'empires' in the game does them a disservice.

Any thoughts? Have I changed your mind?

Two new "express" tourneys in Akkal's discord - Arabia (regular) and Hyperrandom (with CUSTOM civs)

Just a random photo to draw your attention :P Signups in my discord: https://discord.gg/FCkdRqkSKj

I host larger tournaments for the mid-ELO players on a frequent basis, but on the side, I like to hold small, slightly more exclusive events. These are usually limited to 16 or 32 player brackets, and are divided by ELO as needed.

First, the Arabia one: Arabia only:

Inspired by the fairly recent KOTD, we will run "Arabia express"! Use this draft to pick civs: https://aoe2cm.net/preset/ZgFvf This express tourney caps at 16 players per bracket ( >1600 and 1600+) , but once the first round has been played, a new bracket will be made for the losing players of the first round, to ensure at least one more matchup per player.

Standard random map settings, laming allowed, no restarts except for if the map is bugged. BO3 all the way, except the finals, which will be BO5 (I may need to make a new draft for that, will get back to it when the time comes.) This mini-tourney will allow signups until Jan 15th, and will cap at 32 players. However, if we reach 32 signups before that date, the brackets will be launched and the tourney started ASAP. The players are required to play one match per week, but any round can be pre-played, if the matchups are ready! If there are fewer than 32 signups at deadline, the tourney will be launched with the number of attending participants.

    As for the second one:

You might remember my recent "Silly tourney" with 200% handicap, but this one is even more wild.
Hyperrandom with 39 (!) custom OP civs designed by the user "Herasnipe" :

The designated map is Hyperrandom, but the real twist is that we will use 39 custom civs by herasnipe/tyformoneyy, and they are all OP! Don't take this tourney too seriously, just take your chances and try to have fun with it, though we will go with a seeding and double elimination setup for this one.

    This tourney requires three mods:
    - Herasnipe custom civs UI
    - Herasnipe custom civs data mod
    - ZN Hyperrandom

This mini-tourney will allow signups until Jan 15th (no ELO limit), and will cap at 32 players. However, if we reach 32 signups before that date, the brackets will be launched and the tourney started ASAP. The players are required to play one match per week, but any round can be pre-played, if the matchups are ready! If there are fewer than 32 signups at deadline, the tourney will be launched with the number of attending participants. BO3, except for the final, which will be BO5. Hidden civ pick, no repeat! Since it is Hyperrandom, no restarts will be included, and any and all forms of laming is allowed.

Hope to see you taking your chances and signing up for either of those!

Help finishing up a project, hex editing (confession: I'm lazy)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 05:40 AM PST

Hey there. Coming of the huns scenarios in RoR and Age I: DE are both in the Age of Empires II timeline, so I gave it a go and ported them to AoE II HD and AoE II DE, using tools and some hex editing, particulary true in the case of the DE scenario.

Knowing that half the Yamato campaign in both AoE I and AoE I:DE are also in the AoE II timeline I started porting them, BUT, I'm having troubles using hex editing in AoE I:DE scenarios now, because I can't remember how I did it for Coming of the Huns DE and as I formatted my PC, some of the intermediate stepts got lost, too.

So, I'm asking for help. I don't have the skill to place the hundreds of units (including trees) in an scenario, so if anyone has any clue on the unit section header of the AoE DE scenario format or is willing to place hundreds of individual units for four scenarios, PM or something.

    Thanks!

What would be the best civ?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2022 01:12 AM PST

Worthless poll, theses civ specialties will very likely never change and probably should not, but I'm curious to what you would think.

What would be the meta-breaking buff if these civs got access to a very fitting tech they are missing?

Not suggeting the upgrades would be free, just that they would have access to it.
